20.01.2022 FIFO fit: health tips for FIFO workers If youre a fly-in fly-out (FIFO) worker, youre no stranger to the health challenges associated with the lifestyle. Its easy to slip into poor eating habits, sleep patterns are often disrupted, and any regular exercise regime can go out the window. Sam Hubbard, one of MECs mining engineers, shares some tips from his own experience on how to stay healthy when working FIFO.... Food Give the mess a miss, when you can Its not always possible to avoid eating at the sites mess, but bring some of your own food to site so you arent always eating there. When you do eat at the mess, pack a couple of extra meals for yourself when you leave. For example, after dinner grab something healthy for breakfast and lunch for the following day. This removes the temptation to return for a fried brekky plus, it gives you extra time in the morning to catch some precious zs! Be mindful Know whats healthy for you. At dinner, fill your plate with veggies, cut down on meat portions and try to avoid carbs. When youre leaving the mess, dont go via the dessert bar out of sight, out of mind! Stick to eating the basics on site, and save the treats for when youre back home. Go out for brunch or fancy dinner with family and friends on your rest days to reward yourself for not over-indulging in camp food. Sleep Ban the phone Switch out your phone or TV for a good book before bed. Reading in bed helps you fall asleep at a regular time and also helps you switch your mind off from the stresses of work. Try using an ebook reader. They allow you to read without the light on, eliminating bright lights that keep you alert. Then, when youre ready you can simply switch the ebook off and nod off. Track your sleep As you know, you should be aiming for seven or eight hours of sleep a night. There are smartphone apps and fitness bands available that will track your sleep, helping you get into a regular pattern. Exercise Be disciplined Burning off excess energy at the end of the work day helps you have a more restful sleep and is good for your mental health, so youll thank yourself for it. Itll also burn off excess calories from those times you didnt avoid the dessert table at the mess Make it enjoyable If the camp gym bores you, try listening to a powerful podcast during your workout. It will distract you, and you can learn something while you keep yourself healthy. Find a buddy! Its easier to motivate yourself if you are exercising alongside someone else. Take advantage of camp sports facilities the more people you get involved in activities the less it will feel like training.

16.01.2022 6 mental health tips for FIFO workers. Know your triggers: Everyone has them. If you are better when youre on a two-and-one swing because it gives you more time at home with family and friends and a stronger sense of connection, work to those strengths. Dont take on four- and six-week contracts if you know it will be a challenge for you mentally. Alcohol: Drinking on site now and then can have its advantages, but if youre working really long days, are tired and feeling a b...it blue, alcohol is unlikely to help. Know your limits and stick to them as much as possible. Exercise: Staying fit and healthy and looking after your body can also do wonders for your mental health. Many mining workers exercise every day. If you get into a good fitness habit it can really help keep depression at bay. Ask for help: If youre struggling with something, talk to a friend about it. The adage is true: A problem shared is a problem halved. But if that doesnt help, dont hesitate to connect with organisations such as beyondblue or The Black Dog Institute. Even taking that very first step will help you on your way to getting the support that you need. Take some time: Working with heavy machinery, or on tasks that are monotonous, when youre not feeling mentally strong can be downright dangerous. Talk to your supervisor and take some time out if you can. Use that time to rest and recuperate and come back to work with a clear head. Talk about it: More than 85 per cent of mining workers are men and unfortunately men arent always known for talking through their problems. Mining is also a tough environment and it has often been said there is no place for weakness. But if youve been through depression and anxiety, be brave and talk about it to other people if you can. The social stigma of depression can only be changed if its bought out into the light, and showing youve survived a tough time makes you strong, not weak. Sharing your own experiences might just make someone else feel brave enough to do the same and even save a life.
