12.01.2022 Thanks for your time earlier this week regarding the first Underwater Hockey game at the Musgrave Park Pool on 31st January 1970. Following is a ...short coverage of my association with USFA QLD / QUF and how I was involved with the development of the sport here in Queensland. I got involved in Skin Diving in 1957 and in 1961 joined the Underwater Adventurers Club ( UAC) in Brisbane where I took on various roles over the years including Treasurer, Scuba Chairman and Public Relations Officer and was actively involved in Diver Training. By 1964 I was also writing Diving Articles for both Australian and Overseas Diving magazines including Fin Diver Magazine in South Africa who supplied me with copies of their magazine, where I came across coverage of their Underwater Hockey Competitions. Obtaining more detailed information from them I set about with two dive buddies from the Underwater Adventurers Club to manufacture some hockey sticks. These were cut from marine ply and liberally coated with marine varnish and a puck was fashioned from a divers lead weight in preparation for our first competition. The first competition in fact was held at the Musgrave Park Pool on Saturday 31st January 1970 and involved, UAC members and members of the University of Queensland Skin Diving Club. The morning was a great success and I photographed the event for the Australian Woman’s Day Magazine, who ran an article on this new facet of Skin Diving in their April issue. Underwater Hockey quickly spread through those clubs affiliated with the Queensland Underwater Federation including other Skindiving Clubs in the Brisbane area, Gold Coast and Tweed Heads, Nambour, Toowoomba and then along the full length of the Queensland Coastline. You may possibly imagine my personal satisfaction in seeing the heights that this aspect of the sport has now reached. I have attached hereto some survivors of the photos taken on that first day of competition at The Musgrave Park Pool. By 1965 I was appointed as Scuba Chairman to the USFA QLD and as well, appointed as their Public Relations Officer, both of which carried onto the Queensland Underwater Federation as the national USFA became the AUF and the USFA Qld became the QUF. I was also appointed as a member of the AUF Photographic Advisory Panel and some years later and with the formation of FAUI, I was further appointed as Associate Director of FAUI Queensland. During this period and fortunately being self employed, I was able to travel interstate to Diving Conferences and often returned wondering why Queensland did not have such an event. In 1972 I assembled a proposal for a National Underwater Symposium and Film Festival to be called Man and the Sea and with a Logo already prepared, I presented this to the QUF. It was accepted and I was appointed Director and ran this rather successful event from inception for three years until 1975, by which time commitments to a young family and my business forced me to pass the event back to the QUF to continue with the annual event. I am not sure as to whether you are familiar with Man and the Sea, but it was held at the Schonell Theatre, University of Queensland and included an extensive Trade Show and even including a one person submarine positioned in the lower Foyer to the surprise of many. I have attached a copy of one of the programs showing just what we were able to achieve. Hope this was not too dull, but realising that Underwater Hockey is 50 years old made me think that many present day divers might not be aware of just how active we were back in the 60’s / 70’s. Wishing you the greatest success next year, Regards, Errol Dyer.
