25.01.2022 Did you know that while touchscreens were only thought to be something out of science fiction movies until the last two decades, the technology that underpins them can be traced back to as early as the 1940s. E A Johnson is credited with developing the first touch driven screen in 1965 in the UK, which is the mechanism used by many smartphones today. Come and check out our Touch on History Touchscreen Tech. You can use touchscreen technology to search items from the Museums collection, read, hear and see information about them.

21.01.2022 Did you know that the penny farthing was invented because they were easier to ride than the earlier bicycles? Strangely enough bicycles before the penny farthing were even harder to ride and more uncomfortable. They had large wheels that were similar in size but as they were made of iron they were very bumpy to ride. The big wheel of the penny farthing softened the bumps on cobbled streets, and also enabled the bike to move further with each pedal stroke. Want to know more?... Join us for the launch of the Unley Museums next major exhibition On Ya Bike. It explores the history of bikes, looks at where to ride today, bike artwork by Jimmy Dodd and even has a power generator bike that you can ride to see how much power you can generate. Thursday 31st October 5-7pm Exhibition open until 8 February 2020 Free no bookings required, refreshments included. 20.01.2022 Did you know that 125 years ago women in South Australia became the first in the world to be given the right to vote? On 18th December we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Womens Suffrage in South Australia. Despite how the word sounds, suffrage actually means the right to vote. South Australian women exercised their right to vote for the first time on 25 April 1896, at that time they were still the only women in Australia able to participate in the election. A proud mom...ent for our progressive state. Drop by the Unley Museum and see who from Unley petitioned to give women that right, and read about our involvement in Womens Suffrage in South Australia.
