25.01.2022 NO BURNING OFF JUNE & JULY This is a friendly reminder that the Yarra Ranges Council smoke free June / July will soon be upon us. 25.01.2022 Things are getting serious, beside the toilet paper shortage, some of us may be self isolating at home and thinking about getting some chores done. Some of us m...ay even be getting told to get those chores finally done. Therefore CFA District 13 are placing a ban on all illegal burnoffs, especially those that havent registered their burns. Seriously though, to limit our crews exposure to each other and the public, we are asking everyone to please register your burn off if you are cleaning up around your yard / property. To ensure we can continue to protect life and property we have implemented many significant measures to protect the health and safety of our people and reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 and we need everyone to help us, help you, simply by ensuring you register your burnoff. You can do this is four ways: 1. Phone 1800 668 511 and provide the required information OR 2. Complete the Burn off Notification Form and email the form to [email protected]. You can download the form here: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au//8ca71e39-0347-750f-5d74-572c1d 3. Send the form to ESTA by fax: 1300 674 428 or 4. National Relay Service Users can ring 1300 555 727 and ask for Information to be relayed to ESTA via 1800 668 511 #WeAreAllInThisTogether #HelpUsHelpYou #PleaseRegisterYourBurnoff

24.01.2022 Each Week on Monday night at 6pm #facesofupwey will introduce a member of Upwey CFA to the community. Tonight we would like to introduce: Name: Gail Neal What is your Role? Quartermaster... Length of service: 14 years What or who inspired you to volunteer at UPWEY CFA? My husband and the wish to set a good example for my family What aspect of your volunteering experience have you really enjoyed? The people I have met and the feeling of giving back to the community in which I have lived for almost 40 years. What have you found to be the most challenging thing about being a volunteer at Upwey? Finding where I fit in and acquiring a feeling of being useful. How does your family feel about what you do? They are proud. One has followed in Brian’s and my footsteps and another is looking to do the same. What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Go for it. Be committed and do it for the right reasons. What might be surprising for people to know about you? I am a control freak who lives with a control freak. Thank you for your service Gail.

21.01.2022 The strength of our Hills community never ceases to amaze me. Less than 48 hours ago our ‘Help the Hills’ page went live looking for volunteers to help with the... massive clean up some of our residents are up against. By knock off today, residents had responded and came out in numbers to help. Today we were able to respond to multiple addresses and get stuck into the work. Not least was our biggest job with approx 25 helpers tackling one property alone with 19 trees down. An unbelievable effort saw 14 sorted out with 5 left to do tomorrow, a simply awesome effort. We have plenty to do so we’re still looking for helpers tomorrow if you can spare some time. We are also pleased to welcome the Rotary Club of Emerald & District who have jumped on board with us, we highly appreciate the support and resources they bring to our group. Hope to see lots more helpers at our staging area tomorrow to keep up the great work, there’s plenty to do. Cheers - Help the Hills team.

21.01.2022 Vale John (cloughy) Clough Tonight we are sad to announce the passing of a friend and colleague, Brigade Life Member John Clough. John joined the Upwey Fire Brigade in March of 1966, he received his 12 year Service Medal, 20 year Service Medal and then each subsequent 5 years through to receiving his 45 year Service Medal.... In 1989 John was awarded the National Medal and also received an additional two National Medal Clasps for His additional years of Diligent Service. John was also presented with Brigade Awards being; Captains Shield - 1967 Fireman of the Year - 1972 Utility Fireman of the Year - 1987 and 1988 Commendation Awards - 1989, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1996 an again in 1998. The above is testament to the commitment and dedication John provided to the Upwey Fire Brigade, CFA, the Upwey and surrounding Communities. John is remembered for his Firemanship, big smile and always being on hand with a quick quip and a laugh. Quoting an ex member from a conversation today, "They say the best thing an old fireman can teach a young fireman is how to be an old fireman." John had this in spades, there are countless times I can recall John quietly (or not so quietly in some cases) taking someone under his wing and teaching them how to refine their skills. To Johns Wife Julie and Daughters Annette and Maryrose,, our thoughts are with you. To John, thanks for everything Cloughy! May you rest in peace. Regards, Captain - Upwey Fire Brigade

20.01.2022 Our thoughts go out to the Family, friends and colleagues of the 4 taken too soon.

19.01.2022 MT DANDENONG TOURIST ROAD CLOSED Please be aware that Mt Dandy Tourist Rd, as well as other roads in the Dandenong Ranges, is closed to non residents. There are... Police checkpoints turning around vehicles that do not have a legitimate reason to be in this area. The area is still not safe, with trees continuing to fall and powerlines still down. So therefore we are kindly asking you to stay away!

06.01.2022 Update: Boil Water Advisory Notification lifted across all suburbs. Water quality testing has confirmed that the water supply in the network is safe to drink. ...Please see latest post https://www.facebook.com/YVWater/posts/3564687696915692 --------------- Boil Water Advice: Our potential water quality issue is affecting the suburbs listed below. The water comes from closed catchments and has been mixed with disinfected water so the likelihood of any illness being caused is low. But we believe it is better to be safe than sorry. We are working with Melbourne Water and DHHS and will confirm when the boiled water notice is withdrawn. If you have already drunk the water, there is a low risk of potential gastro type of illness. If you are concerned about possible infection please call the Coronavirus Public Information Line 1800 675 398 or go to https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus We will also be limiting access to our fire station to Brigade members only. The support shown for our volunteers was overwhelming and we are plea...sed to announce how we are distributing $20.5m. Highlights include millions of dollars for brigade equipment, a new leadership and development program for volunteers, ten mobile community education vans and mobile tablets for online volunteer learning and training. Donations given to specific brigades are also being spent on ultralight tankers, field command vehicles and other items needed to support our brigades. To everyone who contributed: we cannot thank you enough. Read the full story: https://news.cfa.vic.gov.au/-/cfa-rolls-out-20.5-million-in

02.01.2022 Wishing all the mums a happy mothers day from all of us at Upwey Fire Brigade.

02.01.2022 Following up on a few other posts for the story on Members of Strike Team 1304, Rotation 8, working the Grafton fires in NSW last year. Our very own Jess Jacobs along with Alan Potts and Luke Summerscales were last week presented with the Chief Officers Commendation Award. Jess and fellow Strike team members were on hand when a Divisional Commander from NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service was struck down with a heart attack. They, and the other strike team members, worke...d tirelessly for over 45 minutes using three AED's before Ambulance officers arrived to their remote location. A lot of good has come form that incident, the patient has had a full recovery and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service fitting AED's to vehicles. We consider ourselves fortunate to have three defibrillators on our vehicles and look forward to the day they are standard issue across all CFA vehicles. Congratulations to Strike Team 1304 R8, and in particular Jess, you make us extremely proud.

02.01.2022 Upwey Fire brigade were responded to a house fire on Saturday night, luckily working smoke alarms alerted neighbours who called 000. We were supported by crews from Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade - CFA, Belgrave Fire Brigade - CFA, Bayswater Fire Brigade-CFA, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police. The fire was quickly contained and brought under control and was caused by an electrical fault. Thanks to all the supporting brigades and our local 7/11 for supplying drinks and food, another great save.

02.01.2022 The cold wet weather of winter is upon us and it is this time of year when we may need to use our clothes dryers more often. Please remember to clean your filter after each load. Never run your dryer while no-one is home.

02.01.2022 While the family is staying at home heres a little activity from CFA.

01.01.2022 Santa is on his way. Listen out for the music and he wont be far away.

01.01.2022 On Wednesday 29th April 2020 at 5:40pm a number of Brigades across the State including Upwey Fire Brigade will be sounding their Brigade Station Siren four times as a mark of respect to the four Victorian Police Officers who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty last week. There is no reason to be concerned or alarmed should you hear one or more Brigade sirens sounding tomorrow at 5.40pm.

01.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION At 11:59pm on Wednesday, 22 July it will be mandatory to wear a face mask / face covering when leaving your home for one of the four permitted reasons. The delay in making this mandatory is to allow people time to purchase or make a face mask or covering. ... But for those who can, please start wearing a face mask or covering straight away. I will be. This decision has been made based on expert medical advice from the CHO and in response to the concern of continuing increase in cases. So just as you would take your keys or wallet as you leave home - now remember to take something to cover your face - to help keep you and our community safe. There will be some reasons for not wearing a face mask: If there is a medical reason for not doing so Kids under 12 If there is a professional reason for not doing so Or in situations where its just not practical to do so - like when running Children under two should NEVER wear a face mask If you are driving alone or with members of household in car for one of four permitted reasons then you dont have to but if with others outside household in car for whatever reason (legal) would be. The above means that teachers who are on-site dont have to wear them (but they can choose to) but students attending will. While everyone will be expected to wear one to and from school. Aside from the above, the expectation and the law will be that when you leave home for the allowed four reasons you must cover your face. If you cant get a mask for any reason, a scarfe or some form of face covering is better than no covering at all. The Government are currently sourcing millions of extra masks and there will be more on this in the coming days about how exactly these are distributed. On Workplaces We have seen recently a spike in cases across a number of work places where people are working closely together. The Government will work with industry to provide advice over the coming days on this as well. On that as well we will be conducting an inspection and enforcement blitz at workplaces across the state. That will be done by WorkSafe, Emergency Management Victoria and Victoria Police. The fine for not wearing a face covering will be $200 and will be enforced by Victoria Police. Once again, there job is hard enough - so please put a face mask or covering on for them, for your friends, your family and for every Victorian. We are in this together and together we can do something as simple as wearing a face covering to help keep people safe. REMINDER OF 4 REASONS: Shopping for food & essential supplies Medical, care or compassionate needs Exercise and related activities (not allowed to travel to Regional Vic and stay local Work and education (if you cant work/learn remotely)
