24.01.2022 SPREAD A LITTLE LOVE Happy Friday everyone and wishing you a wonderful and restful weekend ahead! I wanted to share a little sneak peak into my own two (out of three) furbabies. We welcomed Fynn our Labrador x wolfhound into our lives about 11 years ago. I know deep down that Fynn was actually the one who picked me at the pound and she rescued me She is the reason I strive to be a better vet every day than the day before, and she teaches me that unconditional love com...es in all shapes and sizes. She pretty much raised her little grey fur-sister Bear, who simply adores her! These two are inseparable and full of love. My pets (and all my pets from before waiting at the rainbow bridge) have shaped me to be who I am and how I see all animals today, and for that I am incredibly grateful. All animals, great and small, are precious and deserve to lead happy, safe and healthy lives! #mylifepassion #mobilevet #vetaroundthecorner #animalsteachuslove #lovemydog #lovemycat See more

20.01.2022 PREVENTING HEARTWORM DISEASE - Spread by infected mosquitoes, heartworm is a parasite that grows in the heart and lungs of infected pets. With Queenslands sunny, wet and warm tropical environment, mosquitoes are a year-round problem and heartworm continues to be a big problem for pets. EFFECTS - In dogs, heartworm larvae make their way to the heart, where they mature and grow. Heartworm disease can be fatal, causing cough, weight loss, lethargy and eventually leads t...o organs being compromised. Although much rarer in cats, heartworm can also affect our feline friends (more so their lungs than heart). PREVENTION - Heartworm disease is EASILY PREVENTABLE and there are many easy and inexpensive options available. On the other hand, once a pet is infected, actual treatment of heartworm disease can be complex, very expensive and can result in severe side effects. At Vet Around The Corner, we care just as much for your pets health and well-being as you do. If your pet has not been up to date with heartworm prevention, they may require a heartworm test prior to starting on preventatives. Testing for heartworm infection is easily done, but prevention is even easier and less risky! It can feel confusing trying to keep up to date with choosing the best preventatives for your furbaby. Vet Around The Corner is committed to being here for you and your furry friend to 1) provide you with options and 2) to tailor the best preventative treatment for your pet. Ensuring your pet is up to date with their heartworm and preventatives will help them live happy and healthy lives, and will bring you ease of mind and is better for your wallet too in the long run WE COME TO YOU. Vet Around The Corner is your familys local mobile vet service bringing heart, experience and expertise to your doorstep. We aim to bring exceptional standards of veterinary care from our hearts to your home. For all your veterinary needs, please contact us on 0437 600 037 - we would love to hear from you! #mobilevet #vetaroundthecorner #lovemypet

18.01.2022 PARALYSIS TICKS: With our milder winters, and wet and warm weather, numerous tick cases are seen year-round in Queensland, with especially high rates between October and March (known as Tick Season). One particular tick us Queenslanders need to be extra careful about is the PARALYSIS TICK (photo). Although tiny in size, paralysis ticks are one of the most dangerous parasites that can cause severe illness and even death to our pets. Ticks normally attach themselves to ...native animals such as wallabies, kangaroos and possums. So please be extra careful if you live in or near bush land areas with wildlife, as ticks will be prevalent! WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? Paralysis of the hind legs Unsteady staggering walk, uncoordination Dry cough, gagging and/or vomiting Change in your furbabys meow or bark Laboured breathing Refusal to eat Note: Some pets may not show hind limb paralysis at first, initially exhibiting a gurgling choking cough, however their condition will quickly deteriorate. If you notice any of the above symptoms, please contact your vet and search for ticks on them If you find a tick on your pet, remove the entire tick immediately and contact your vet. WHAT CAN I DO? Check your pets daily for ticks Feel for small lumps and remember to also check under their collar, between their toes, lips and gum line, around their butt, and inside their ears. Use flea and tick preventative treatment to effectively protect your pet from the risk of ticks. There are many preventative treatments available, and it can be confusing and overwhelming choosing the best preventative for your furbaby. Vet Around The Corner is committed to helping you tailor the best preventative treatment for your pet to ensure they remain protected and safe year round. Vet Around The Corner is your familys mobile vet with heart, experience and expertise. We aim to bring exceptional standards of veterinary care to your doorstep, at your convenience and your pets comfort. 17.01.2022 COMMON HOUSEHOLD ITEMS TOXIC TO DOGS: With many people spending lots more quality time with their precious furbabies, Vet Around The Corner would like to share a gentle reminder about keeping our pawsome pooches away from the following common household items that are TOXIC to dogs: Chocolate Grapes, sultanas, raisins Garlic... Onion Alcohol Cycads (more info below) All of these common household items can be incredibly toxic to dogs, and may even be fatal. CYCADS: The cycad plant (also known as the sago palm) is a common household plant that is hardy and requires little care, making it the ideal choice for many. However, many people are not aware of just how toxic it can be for dogs, or even how its leaves can be quite attractive-smelling to dogs, making accidental ingestion likely. Any part and even a small amount of the cycad plant is toxic to our canine furbabies, and can result in liver failure and death. Here is what you can do to keep your pet dog safe and well: Remove all cycad plants from your property, if possible If possible, have cycads kept away from areas where your dog is kept unsupervised, or do not allow them to roam free in areas where cycads are planted Remove any loose vegetation from cycads, or any fallen seeds or nuts to prevent our pooches from eating them If you see your pet dog eating a cycad plant, contact your veterinarian immediately for first aid advice. Vet Around The Corner wishes everyone and their pets happy and safe times together . We are a mobile vet service with heart, expertise and experience. 12.01.2022 IS YOUR PET IN PAIN? Cooler weather can be uncomfortable for our older pets and pets with arthritis. Just like for us humans with arthritis, cooler temperatures can worsen sore joints in our pets, making them feel more stiff and painful. If only our pets could tell us so ! HOW TO TELL? Pets let us know they are in pain and discomfort through a range of behaviours, from shaking, panting excessively, to whimpering. Some signs of arthritis also include: trouble ...getting off their bed; pain or stiffness when getting up or down; reluctance walking, climbing stairs, jumping or playing; yelping when touched; licking their affected joints; or a change in personality (becoming irritable in response to increased pain, just like us!). WHAT CAN YOU DO? Vet Around The Corner cares as much about your pets health and comfort as you do. We have the experience to provide your pet with a customised range of effective traditional and/or holistic interventions to make sure your pets pain is eased and they stay comfortable, pain-free and happy through the colder weather and beyond! 10.01.2022 Let us be treatwise! When you sit down to enjoy some of your favourite snacks it is quite hard not to be tempted to share them with your favourite four-legged friend, especially when they are looking at you with their big hungry eyes. But as the human digestive system works quite differently to those of our four legged companions offering our pets treats off our plate is providing extra calories in their diet that will add up to extra kilos #mobilevet #veterinarian #vetaroundthecorner #mobileveterinaryservice

06.01.2022 PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE! But what exactly is preventative treatment? Preventatives is an area of veterinary care where we look to PREVENT problems before they start, rather than reacting to problems when they occur. There are three main areas of preventative treatment, including: Vaccinations - preventing infectious diseases Flea and tick prevention - keeping the external parasites and potential diseases at bay... Heartworm and intestinal worm prevention - clearing them out before they can multiply and cause serious diseases It can feel confusing trying to keep up to date with choosing the best preventatives for your furbaby. Vet Around The Corner is committed to being here for you and your furry friend to 1) provide you with options and 2) to tailor the best comprehensive preventative treatment for your pet. Ensuring that your pet is receiving the best preventatives possible will help them live happy and healthy lives, and will bring you ease of mind and is better for your wallet too in the long run WE COME TO YOU. Vet Around The Corner is your familys local mobile vet service bringing heart, experience and expertise to your doorstep. We aim to bring exceptional standards of veterinary care from our hearts to your home. 06.01.2022 PROTECT YOUR PET DOG: What you need to know about PARVO (Canine Parvovirus) WHAT is Parvo? Parvo is a highly contagious viral disease that causes a serious infectious gastrointestinal illness in puppies and young dogs. In a matter of days, a perfectly healthy puppy/dog can become fatally ill. Without treatment, it is potentially deadly. In recent months, a spike in Parvo cases have been noted in Southeast Queensland, resulting in numerous families losing pets. HOW can my... dog catch Parvo? Parvo can be transmitted by any person, animal, or object that comes into contact with an infected dogs poop. Parvo can spread DIRECTLY via contact between your dog and an infected dog. INDIRECT transmission can also occur when your dog comes into contact with contaminated stool, surfaces, bowls, toys, leashes, and peoples hands and clothing. Parvo is a dangerously resilient virus and can survive on surfaces such as soil for months and even years. WHAT are the common symptoms of Parvo? Severe, bloody diarrhoea Lethargy and anorexia Fever and vomiting Weakness and dehydration Contact your vet if you notice any or all of these symptoms. Even if Parvo is not the cause, these symptoms could be the result of another illness requiring veterinary attention. If your dog contracts Parvo, treatment can be very expensive and not necessarily successful. CAN I PROTECT MY DOG from Parvo? YES you can! Fortunately, there is a vaccine to protect your canine furbaby from Parvo. It is considered a core vaccine (part of the C5 vaccination) and is recommended for every dog. Prevention is absolutely vital to ensure that your pet dog stays happy, healthy, and safe from Parvo. Vaccines for parvovirus are usually given in a series of 3 shots when your puppy is between 6-8 weeks old, again at 10-12 weeks, and at 14-16 weeks. A booster shot is administered yearly thereafter. 05.01.2022 COMPASSIONATE END OF LIFE CARE FOR PETS - When pets are getting very old or are diagnosed with terminal illness, emotions often run high. Pets are, after all, a part of our families and a part of us. At this point in time, you may be facing two very difficult options: prolonging life through further treatment, or helping your pet pass peacefully through euthanasia. However, hearing those dreaded words there’s nothing more we can do does not always mean euthanasia is your ...only choice. At Vet Around The Corner, our priority is to be an advocate for your pet’s quality of life, and to provide you with options to ensure they are kept comfortable in their golden years. One option is Hospice Care. PET HOSPICE CARE is quality end of life care for your beloved furry family members. Applying this comfort-orientated care to our furbabies means that we do not carry out further diagnostics, surgery, or advanced medical treatments. Instead, we will focus on maintaining quality of life through supportive medications in combination with gentle non-invasive therapies. Depending on your pet’s condition, this period of time can vary from a few days, to weeks and sometimes months. This may allow you to spend extra quality time with your precious furry family member, as well as emotionally plan and prepare you for their final passing. Veterinary hospice is based on managing these minimum Quality of Life Standards of Care: Pain Mobility Appetite Hygiene Hydration Happiness Vet Around The Corner is your family’s mobile vet service committed to journeying alongside you and your pet from the start to the finishing line. 04.01.2022 WINTER PET CARE TIPS: The colder months can affect our furry family members in many ways. Vet Around The Corner would like to share some tips on how you can help make sure your pet stays healthy and snug as a bug all through the winter months! WINTER WARDROBE: Even during the cooler weather, our furry pals still require regular daily exercise to keep fit and in shape! A warm winter jumper or coat can help keep them cosy during walks in winter, and snug throughout the day.... WINTER-CONSCIOUS DIET: Our furry family need a well-balanced diet, and its particularly vital to maintain a healthy weight for your pet over the cooler months. If your pet is overweight, it can lead to severe health problems such as heart disease, joint problems, arthritis, respiratory problems, diabetes, skin issues, and even premature aging. Ensuring your furbaby has a nutritious diet and regular exercise are two important factors in maintaining their healthy weight and optimal physical health! PET-GROOMING: A natural furry winter coat or pet jumpers/jackets can also easily hide trouble, such as lumps, bumps and sores, so brush your pet regularly. This can also help identify and control fleas and ticks and ensure your pets coat does not become matted and uncomfortable. As you brush, feel and look carefully for signs of illness and let your vet know if you come across anything suspect! And the best part is... your furbaby will love all the extra attention and love from you when youre grooming them WINTER HEALTH IS KEY: If your pet has an underlying health condition, this is a particularly important time of the year to make sure they get a regular health check-up. Senior pets are particularly at risk, with their most common ailment being arthritis. Older pets are more prone to having osteoarthritis in their joints, and when temperature drops, these aches and pains can be much more painful than during other seasons. 03.01.2022 COMMON HOUSEHOLD ITEMS TOXIC TO CATS: Cats are curious little creatures, and can sometimes stick their noses into random places! Vet Around The Corner would like to share some information about common household items that may be TOXIC to your feline furbabies: LILIES (*more below) PARACETAMOL (Cats are extremely sensitive to paracetamol toxicity. One regular strength tablet may be toxic to a cat, and a second ingested 24hrs later may be lethal. Paracetamol and other med...ications should always be kept out of your feline furbabys reach) Chocolate Grapes, sultanas, raisins Garlic and Onion Household HAZARDS that can choke or block your kittys intestines if swallowed: Dental floss, yarn or string Holiday decorations, eg tinsel & ribbons Toys with small or removable parts LILY TOXICITY: Some cats may love munching on greenery and bouquets of flowers, and lilies in particular are HIGHLY TOXIC to cats. Many types of lilies, such as Peace, Tiger, Asiatic hybrids, Japanese show, Easter, Stargazer (and more) can cause serious kidney failure in cats and sadly even death. Ingestion of even a small amount of any part of the lily plant (including petals, stems, leaves, pollen) may result in acute kidney failure. Please remember to keep your cat away and safe from lilies and the above household items that may be toxic and hazardous to our feline friends. If you witness your pet consuming items or material you suspect may be toxic, do not hesitate to seek emergency assistance, even if you do not notice immediate adverse effects. Sometimes, even if poisoned, an animal may appear normal for several hours after the incident. Vet Around The Corner wishes everyone and their pets happy and safe times together . 01.01.2022 BATHING YOUR CANINE FURFAMILY helps to keep them clean and their coat in a good and healthy condition Bathing your furbaby can also be a great way of getting them used to being handled for check ups and grooming! When massaging shampoo onto your pet, gently palpate their feet and nails, lift up the tail, and touch their muzzle. All this, together with lots of positive reinforcement (treats, anyone?) can help to minimise any anxiety they may have associated with groo...ming and wellness examinations. FAQS: Is canine skin the same as human skin? Nope, there are some major differences! Canine skin has a pH of 6.2, while human skin has a pH of 5.5. Therefore, we need to use specific veterinary products when caring for our dog’s skin. The outer layer of canine skin is also much thinner than human skin. Can I use human shampoo on my pet? It is recommended to use only good quality veterinary products that are pH balanced and designed for pets Their delicate skin needs to be treated and washed with veterinary products that are less likely to a) strip the oils from their coat and b) disrupt the normal function of their skin How often should I wash my pet? Fortnightly is suitable for pets with no skin issues. For pets with skin issues, washing frequency may need to be increased as directed by your veterinarian and medicated shampoos may be indicated. Can I use a hot hair dryer on my pet? The heat from a hair dryer can damage your pet’s skin. A hair dryer may be used but preferably at a cooler setting. Always check the air coming from the appliance prior to using it on your pet to ensure the temperature isn’t too high. Tips! Remember the groin, feet and under the tail Use a damp cloth to gently clean the face, being careful to avoid the eyes When lathering, always add more water before adding more shampoo Feel for lumps and bumps while showering Vet Around The Corner is your family’s mobile vet service with heart, expertise and experience.
