24.01.2022 Over the weekend many grateful families celebrated #ThankYouDay2020. It is a day to say thanks and recognise all the wonderful people who have given the gift of life through organ and tissue donations. Last year, 183 patients were fortunate to receive heart transplants around Australia. There are many more waiting for a second chance at life. It only takes a minute to register as a donor at www.donatelife.gov.au #DonateLife #ThankYouDay2020 #OrganDonation #TissueDonation

13.01.2022 On this tragic day in history, the world lost Diana, Princess of Wales. Today we pay tribute to the Queen of Hearts who officially opened the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney in 1996. We remember her kindness, compassion, curiosity, professionalism, and above all, her grace. Even after all these years, we still feel incredibly honoured that Princess Diana chose to support the Institute and our relentless fight against heart disease. https://www.victorchang.edu.au/princess-diana

12.01.2022 I remember the day vividly, Ayden was diagnosed immediately with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a life-threatening heart condition that can cause sudden death in children. I still find it hard to consider that if he hadnt been reviewed we would have lost our little boy. Thank you Nikki for opening up and sharing your familys story about this inherited #heartdisease. Your story brings awareness to the importance of Professor Livia Hool's and Dr Helena Violas discovery and how it can impact the lives of others.https://www.victorchang.edu.au/supp/real-life-stories/nikki

12.01.2022 Like a good gardener, a scientist learns a lot from watching nature, from seeing what occurs naturally and using this knowledge to help solve problems. Its a lot of trial and error before a breakthrough. On a quiet Saturday Diane Fatkin is likely to be tending to her garden after a long hike, a long way from her world leading laboratory. Professor Fatkin is dedicated to investigating how genes can cause heart disease in families and we're grateful that she's been able to share this story with us in this year's annual report. https://www.victorchang.edu.au//women-in-science-diane-fat

11.01.2022 "The reality is, over the past 25 years I dont think theres any other Australian whos done more for heart research than Professor Bob Graham. - Matthew Grounds, Chairman. 04.01.2022 There are some incredibly generous people in this world, but few are as generous as Chuck Feeney, founder of The Atlantic Philanthropies. Earlier in the month, Mr. Feeney shut down his Atlantic Philanthropies after gifting more than $8 billion to charities, universities, and institutions worldwide. In 2005 Chuck met with the Institutes, then Executive Director Professor Bob Graham, I was thanking him for his time, and had just turned to walk away when he said: Oh, by the w...ay, you can have the $20 million. That $20 million ensured the construction of the Australian headquarters and home of heart research. Today, there are 250 scientists and staff working in 21 laboratories making world-class discoveries in that very building. This would never have been possible without Mr. Feeneys vision to give away his fortune while still living. Chuck, from the bottom of our hearts, we #thankyou. See more

04.01.2022 The #HomeofHeartResearch had a big day yesterday following our announcement of Professor Livia Hool and Dr Helena Viola's breakthrough discovery on Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Today kicks off National #ScienceWeek and this year as we face a global pandemic, there are even more scientists to celebrate. We have almost 200 researchers at the Institute and we're incredibly proud of every single one of them. Happy Science Week!

04.01.2022 Here at the Institute, we get a lot of questions about different heart conditions. This week the spotlight is on heart failure and heart attacks. A heart attack occurs when an artery that supplies oxygen to the heart is suddenly blocked, starving the heart of oxygen. This can lead to heart failure. Heart failure is a serious condition where the heart has difficulty pumping enough blood around the body. Learn about the different types, symptoms and causes of heart failure here: https://www.victorchang.edu.au/heartfailure

04.01.2022 Our qualified nurses will be here today at the Jason Connolly Memorial Cup for Heart Health Checks from 8.30am!

02.01.2022 On this day in history in 2008, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark opened our new building, calling this #HomeofHeartResearch a location for the brightest and best minds in the country and the world. When the Institute was first established in 1994, it started with just two scientists. Today there are over 250 doctors, scientists and staff working in 21 laboratories, continuing to make discoveries in heart research.

02.01.2022 The #HomeofHeartResearch extends all the way across to Western Australia with Professor Livia Hool's lab. Based in Perth, the Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Laboratory aims to understand how alterations in calcium and energetics in the heart lead to sudden cardiac death and heart failure. Learn more about Professor Hool, her team and their current research projects. https://www.victorchang.edu.au//cardiovascular-electrophys
