10.01.2022 Let’s talk about meetings, and how many times you’ve walked out of one at the end feeling frustrated because you didn’t say what you wanted to say. A classic study by Barbara and Gene Eakins found that in six out of seven faculty meetings they observed, the men spoke more and longer than the women. In fact, the longest comment from a woman was shorter than the shortest comment by a man. Less scientific but relevant, Sue Montgomery, a Mayor in Montreal knit a scarf during her... monthly committee meetings. She used red thread when men spoke and green when women spoke. The scarf ended up being almost all red (go to bbc.com for photos). It seems not a week passes without reading yet another study or hearing first hand experiences of women not speaking in meetings. There are many reasons for this. Not wanting to seem pushy, not wanting to interrupt, not wanting to be seen as talking too much or just not getting the opportunity. We all remember Kamala Harris having to say I’m speaking due to constant interruptions by her opponent during the debates. I’m sure we’ve all felt like that at some stage. It’s time to change this. It’s time to start speaking up in meetings. Take up space. You’re in that room for a reason. You have something valuable to contribute. It’s the start of a new week. This week make a promise to yourself that you will speak up in meetings. No matter what. Speak. If you’re a professional woman, Vör Consulting can support you to advance your career. Your career is so important. It impacts you every single day. Do not leave it to chance. Invest time and effort into developing a career strategy. Reach out to us if you need help, it’s what we do best. It’s your move. 02.01.2022 Often in conversations about careers, we hear professional women say casually, Oh, that’s my dream job! in reference to a different position within their organisation. When asked whether they’ve discussed this with their boss, or HR Manager, the answer is overwhelmingly No, I haven’t mentioned it. Can you see a problem here? Or can you relate? Please do not keep your dream job a secret. If you want to be considered when this role becomes vacant, if you want to be apprai...sed during succession planning discussions and if you want to know whether you realistically have a chance to secure this role in your current organisation, tell someone. You’ll either be supported and developed so you have a good chance to win the role in the future, or you’ll know it might be time to move on to a different organisation that supports your ambitions. Some secrets shouldn’t be kept. Speak. As always, if you need support navigating your way to your dream role, we are here to make sure you get there.
