21.01.2022 This year, November 8-15 is National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week. For 2020 the theme is Always Was, Always Will Be. We acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years, and that Indigenous history did not begin with European settlement. NAIDOC week is usually held in July, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NAIDOC was postponed until celebrations can be held ...safely. National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) invites all Australians to celebrate Indigenous history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. In lieu of any in-person events, we encourage everyone to visit the Australian Government Indigenous Regional Offices website to search for NAIDOC week activities in your area at https://www.indigenous.gov.au/regional-offices/list-view and to view events at https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/naidoc-week-events. Also, for anyone wishing to celebrate NAIDOC from the comfort of their own home, we encourage you to take a look at the new SBS NAIDOC morning show: https://www.sbs.com.au//sbs-nitv-are-celebrating-naidoc-ne VUSU thanks you for taking the time to acknowledge our First Nations people, and hopes to see everyone participate where possible, whether at home or in person.

20.01.2022 TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBERANCE 20th Nov 2020 Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. On this day, we honour and remember all those who have lost their lives and suffered from violence as a result of transphobia. We stand with them as we listen to their stories, we sit in our discomfort and learn about what we can do as a community to show humanity and respect that every trans person deserves. Transgender advocate, Gwendoyln Ann Smith began this day of remembrance in 1999 to... honour her mother Rita Hester. Rita was an African American transgender woman who lost her life in Boston in 1998. Today marks 20 years of reflection and hope for a better future for our trans and gender diverse youth as well as the entire trans community. VU promotes a safe space and environment for all transgender people to express themselves freely and without judgment. VUSU has collected resources on how to be a good ally and listed some organisations, which raise awareness on the issues transgender people face daily. We hope you take the time today to look at some of the information provided on this day of remembrance. How to be a trans Ally: https://www.minus18.org.au/articles/how-to-be-a-trans-ally

19.01.2022 Let’s be clear: there is absolutely nothing wrong with being who you are. And there’s everything wrong with dangerous conversion practices that tell gay, bi and... trans people they need to be 'cured'. This bigoted quackery destroys lives and perpetuates shame and stigma. Today we introduced legislation to ban it. For good.

04.01.2022 Happy Monday Hyde readers!! It's finally here!! Our sixth and final edition for 2020 - the Indigenous edition!! I would first like to acknowledge the Ance...stors, Elders and families of the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) people of the Kulin Nation, the traditional owners of the land in which Hyde was made. Our Indigenous edition has being released in the perfect time as today is the beginning of NAIDOC Week! NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as does our sixth edition of Hyde. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. This is the largest edition the Hyde team has published all year with 122 pages filled with amazing content produced by VU staff, students, alumni, external organisations and collaborators. In this edition, you'll find pieces of gold and a little bit more, stories of everyday life, imagination, struggle, but most of all, stories of resilience. It's been amazing working on this edition and through many conversations, long hours and countless email exchanges, we are so proud to welcome this edition to the Hyde 2020 collection. Please have a look, have a read and celebrate and embrace the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia.
