25.01.2022 W I L U N A Wiluna, you are wildly untamed and beautiful. Three weeks ago, I was extremely fortunate to go into a remote Western Australian community called Wiluna, as a volunteer with NASCA (National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy). For over 20 years NASCA has worked closely with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in NSW, NT and WA. They work with the kids in schools to strengthen their resilience, cultural pride and identity, develop life skills and... ensure they take all the opportunities they can. I got to spend a week up there, where a small group of us immersed ourselves into Wiluna school and the focus of all of our activities for the week being trust! We also played afternoon sport and had the opportunity to bond with the kids and school teachers. I only wish that I could give as much back to Wiluna and the community, as what they had given to me with this experience. A place and people I will always cherish. A priceless experience. For more information, go have a look at their Facebook page. https://nasca.org.au/

17.01.2022 GREAT SOUTHERN HIGH SCHOOL VISIT Earlier this week, 8 students studying allied health courses across universities in Perth, were fortunate enough to travel down to the Great Southern of WA, with WAALHIIBE, to promote allied health to regional high schools and to expand their networking within hospitals, private practices and other health organisations in the country. These students came from Sport and exercise science, health promotion and physiotherapy courses, with some i...n their final years and others in their second. We were able to visit Mount Barker Community College and Great Southern Grammar, where we engaged with students and provided them with information about different allied health courses, at which universities they are offered and alternative pathways of getting into university. Public health unit, Amity health, South Coast Sports Medicine and Great Southern Aboriginal Health Services were also four very valuable places we visited. The staff were very generous with their time, explaining to us what they do within the community of Albany, but also the enormous amount of outreaching they do. This provided us with a great opportunity to build up our networking, as the staff emphasised the imperative role the new generation of allied health professionals have in working towards prevention rather then reaction, and ensuring that health services are provided to all, especially to those who are at a greater disadvantage. The pandemic we are currently facing, also emphasised the big responsibility health professiaonls have in the county and how imperative they are in provision of essential health services. Albany health campus and Mount Barker hospital really portrayed how integral team work is and that in the country, you’re not just a nurse or just an OT, but that you gain the skill of knowing bits of everything and gaining priceless experience across different fields. Overall, it was a very successful trip, with some students sourcing potential work, prac and volunteering for when they finish their degrees or that can contribute towards them.
