25.01.2022 We are bringing the fireworks to you this year! Celebrate the end of 2020 from your own backyard this year as the Rural City of Wangaratta community says goodbye to 2020 and welcome to 2021. Council will light up the sky with fireworks from three secret locations around Wangaratta, rather than the traditional event in Apex Park, which regularly attracts thousands of people. ... We really want to celebrate the end to such a challenging year. Locations will remain secret to avoid large gatherings, however most residents will be able to see them from their houses or local restaurants. On the night tune into Edge FM or 3NE for the top hits of 2020, sit back and enjoy, as we light the Wangaratta skies with a spectacular show. Fireworks will be let off between 9.30pm and 10.30pm. All safety precautions are in place and permits have been obtained. In the event of CFA code red or severe winds, the fireworks will be cancelled. We recommend that pet owners contain their furry friends indoors during this time. Residents are also urged to abide by Covid-19 regulations guiding the number of people that can gather in a household at one time. For more information about the event go to: wangaratta.vic.gov.au/nye NYE 2019 image by Nicole Fulton.

25.01.2022 Meet Lorna! Lorna Cheong has been one of our lovely community care clients for the past four and a half years. Recently as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival 120 kitting and crochet packs were handed out to our most isolated seniors by our Community Care Team. ... What do you value about the community care service? "My carer Alissa is so good at her work and is a great help to me. She is very caring and interested in her clients". How are you coping with the restrictions? "That visitors have not been allowed. Luckily I have great neighbors as we are able to speak to one another. It has been a very lonely time, so I enjoy keeping my self busy knitting." Lorna is pictured with many of her beautiful knitting creations. With the wool from the Seniors Festival Project she is now making up smaller beanies for premature bubs at the hospital. You are remarkable Lorna! Council's aged care team look after approximately 1500 clients throughout the municipality. If you know anyone that needs services call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. #CelebratingOurCommunity #agedcare #VicSeniorsFestival #InTheGroove #togetherwangcan

23.01.2022 With home renovations enjoying a renaissance in 2020, many of us have found ourselves reaching for the paint brushes and making improvements to our homes. This has kept Annie Heetel and the team at Haymes Paint Shop Wangaratta hard at work, bringing a welcome distraction to a year of hardship. With life now resuming somewhat normality, Annie and the team are incredibly grateful to the local community for their willingness to support local businesses and are happily welcoming ...customers back in store. How has the Wangaratta community helped you/your club through Covid-19? We are very fortunate that our business has flourished in this environment. The restrictions certainly served as motivation for home renovations and we are so grateful that our community chose to get their paint from us. Shopping local is so important during times like these and as a proud family business, we are so pleased that people chose to shop with us and keep us going during these difficult times. What’s one change you’ve experienced that you’d like to keep post-Covid-19? The main change to our business was the implementation of contactless delivery and payments over the phone. We even got to a stage where we were dropping paint at people’s doorsteps! While it can be hard selling paint over the phone, given that many people like to see the colours in person and get that in store experience, it’s a good option for those who know exactly what they’re after. We will definitely keep it going moving forward. What are you most looking forward to as restrictions ease? Personally, I am really looking forward to things being a little more relaxed and having contact with friends and family again. I’m excited to visit our fabulous local eateries and wineries, enjoy meals out with friends and have the kids over for a swim, especially now the summer weather is on the way! All of us have struggled without regular contact with our friends and family, it will be nice to have and have people over to visit again. I am particularly forward to meeting my nephew’s new baby!

22.01.2022 Deemed an essential service, the team at Ricky Chops Barber Shop have been fortunate to remain in work all throughout 2020, even adding a new apprentice barber to their stocks and look forward to providing the community with their next COVID-safe chop! How is your business coping with the current restrictions? While the restrictions have certainly changed the way we operate, our team adapted really well. We even had an apprentice barber join our team, he’s been a fantastic ...addition and has handled the situation exceptionally well, all things being considered. Cleanliness has always been a high priority for us and our procedures have remained much the same all throughout this year. We took steps to reduce the spread by reducing the number of clients in our salon, wearing masks and practicing social distancing. We also implemented a touch point cleaning schedule, where our staff wipe down high touch zones like door handles and benches at regular intervals and removed shared items like magazines and books. What is one thing the pandemic has taught and prepared you for? The value of our wonderful community and the importance of banding together has really rung true this year. No matter how small or large the scale, each person can make a valuable difference. I hope to be more present and resilient on a personal and business scale, now and into the future. What are you looking forward to once restrictions are eased? A big part of our service is caring for client facial hair, whether it be a traditional hot towel cut throat razer shave or a classic moustache shape. Due to mandatory face masks, we haven’t been able to offer this service. When face masks are no longer required, it will definitely be a day of celebration in store! #togetherwangcan

14.01.2022 The Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club has experienced many twists and turns this year, starting off with air quality issues from the summer bushfires and continued changes to government restrictions in light of the pandemic. Despite all of these setbacks, club President Barry Sullivan, explains how the club is stronger and more popular than ever. How has the club been impacted this year? Activities at the clubs have been ever-changing all year, firstly with play being affected by p...oor air quality from the bushfires. As soon as we passed this hurdle, the pandemic arrived and we have been stop-start ever since. Restrictions meant that coaching, competitive tennis and access to clubhouse facilities were completely stopped during the height of the pandemic. How has the tennis club had to adapt its activities? The club has worked diligently to return to tennis safely in accordance with government restrictions and following best practice from Tennis Australia, Tennis Victoria and the Rural City of Wangaratta. Everything from tennis coaching to the operations of club facilities have been re-vamped to ensure that club members and those using the facilities can stay safe. We even have to keep tennis balls in quarantine once they have been used, with separate sets of tennis balls used for hit up and play! What has easing of restrictions meant for the club? As tennis is a non-contact sport and is considered ‘low risk’ activity, tennis has managed to bounce back a lot more quickly than other sporting codes. Tennis has been one of the few leisure activities allowed during restrictions, so we have experienced an overwhelming amount of interest memberships and competitive player numbers are higher than ever before. We have twice the number of teams than we normally would for some competitions our team of volunteers has grown and memberships are at an all-time high. It’s wonderful to see so many people rediscovering their love for tennis!

04.01.2022 In a year that started with bushfires then segued into a global pandemic, Michelle & Phil Ross diversified their farm vineyard business by buying the Redbank wine label from Yalumba (together with partners from Buller Wines). Michelle & Phil then purchased one of Milawa’s most celebrated and historic buildings, the Old Emu Inn and they’re excited to offer locals and visitors their newly opened Redbank Wines Cellar Door and Milawa Providore Tea Rooms. Can you tell us a bit abo...ut your new business and what motivated you to start it? Initially, we were motivated to start our business because we were looking for a venue to operate Redbank Wines Cellar Door. Once we toured the building, we fell in love with the property which includes an old barn and a shed that once housed Milawa’s roller-skating rink! The entire property has a unique history and it’s very well known amongst locals and tourists, which has fortunately created a lot of interest in what we’re doing. With the extra rooms in the building, we decided to use some for tea rooms (more like a lunch-time café) and the rest we turned into bed & breakfast accommodation. How have you coped with many challenges this year has presented? It has been a very challenging year. Between the bushfires and COVID-19, we had to deal with everything from guest cancellations at our farm bed & breakfast to the grapes from some of our vineyards getting smoke taint. While it has been hard, the down time has given us the opportunity to make really exciting changes. We were able to keep our team from our farm employed with the building and property renovations, keeping everyone occupied and working during an incredibly stressful time. How excited are you to share your business with the community? We were very excited to open our doors recently. We’ve had a lot of amazing feedback from the community so far, telling us how wonderful the building looks. We’re looking forward to establishing our place as somewhere locals can come for an early morning coffee, a bite to eat or some wine. It’s so exciting watching this baby come to life, we have such a wonderful team and bringing it all together has been an amazing experience.
