22.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS UPDATE What a roller coaster this is. We want to notify that we are still open as per usual this week. ... Yesterdays announcement of shut down of all non essential businesses was a shock, which we still dont have clarity on whether we fall under essential services or not in private healthcare. On further clarification it is a slower roll out of the shut down than thought and only for pubs, clubs, gyms, cafes (takeaway excluded) and places of social gathering. If it rolls out further then the Australian Physiotherapy Association are investigating where we fall in private practice . Our main point that we are proposing to be classified as essential is that without private practice Physiotherapy that there will be an increased number of people presenting to hospitals and GPs w their musculoskeletal issues. They definitely dont need more work at this time! (And i personally do not want to be near a hospital waiting areas if not essential!) Our request is if you have any little niggles youve been postponing treatment on then please come in now. Our practice has continued to follow strict infection control practices . We are a low density clinic so their is only 1-2 patients in attendance at one time and our rooms are fully enclosed and are spread 15m apart . There is plenty of open air balcony space outside our clinic if you do not wish to sit in waiting areas. We have all completed our coVID 19 infection control certification and honestly were told last week by a medical professional from one of the major hospitals that our practice is cleaner than the hospital which we were pretty proud of to be honest Thanks you to everyone supporting us through this unknown time!

21.01.2022 One of our clients, John Price has embarked today on a bike ride travelling from the Sydney Cricket Ground to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Please support his cause, the unicorn foundation for neuroendocrine cancers. Best of luck JP. Hope the body and mind both hold up well!

19.01.2022 We are now offering online video consultations! WE ARE STILL OPEN IN THE CLINIC and following strict infection control practices to make it safe for everyone to attend, however we do realise many people are anxious about attending but still trying to manage problems and injuries on their own. We are here to help! The government are encouraging us to continue our hands on therapy as this is necessary for many conditions and helping to offload the hospitals but where needed th...ere is good evidence that online video consults can also be effective when you cant make it to the clinic! We have a range of exercise products for quick access in the clinic also which if you prepay can have ready at the door to pick up with minimal contact. We keep stock of CAM boots (walker/moon boots), therabands and loops, spiky massage balls , foam rollers , massage sticks and a range of braces. Anything else needed we are happy to order in which only takes between 1-3 days w most of our suppliers! Whilst things like casting for fractures cant be done online and does require contact we do offer this service also at our clinic which can help to minimise your attendance to the hospital in this time. We will be working on limited admin staff over the next few weeks so please leave a message on our phones if we dont get to it whilst treating others or email our clinic and we can book you in! For detailed information on Online Video Consultations and FAQs please see our website: http://www.waterfrontphysio.com.au/online-video-consultatio

18.01.2022 Pain Explained: Part 5: Did you know that other people and external factors like scans can influence how pain is experienced? When a child falls down, a parent will often encourage oops , jump up, youre ok!. Even if they are thinking something entirely different in worry. The child accepts it because they rely on the parents reaction to determine how they should react. So they do just that, jump up and happily go along. An adult, falls down and everyone comes running in a...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Coronavirus coVID - 19 Information. This is a great video explaining the virus and we urge everyone to watch. We want to assure everyone that we are doing everything possible to keep you all safe within our clinic and we do continue to function as usual w all classes and appointments. ... We thank you for your cooperation over this time in informing us of any illness or symptoms and self quarantining where ever there is any possible or confirmed illness or if you have had contact w people w the illness. What we are doing : - all beds have paper protectors in place which are changed between every client; - all equipment has been sprayed after every use of handling e.g therabands etc - we have always and continue to use alcohol based hand sanitisers between each client; - all our staff have been advised in symptoms to watch for and infection control practices; - all contact surfaces ie door handles , eftpos terminal etc are being sprayed w medical grade anti bacterial sprays - hand sanitiser is available for clients attending appointments. - signage and information regarding signs and symptoms is available and posted at the practice. At this stage to limit risk of spread we ask you to call to move appointments forward two weeks or until your symptoms resolve for all clients with any symptoms or contact with others who may have come in contact with the virus. We are working as per usual otherwise so thank you still for your ongoing support as we negotiate this period. We are calm ourselves as most of these infection control practices are standard routine to us as we always endeavour to bring you a clean and safe place to attend for treatment. Please if you dont have any symptoms or contact risks, know we have your health and wellness always as priority and it is safe to attend. Small businesses like ours rely on your support in these times so we ask people not to panic about attending. More information on CoVID-19 can be sourced from the Australian Department of Health website https://www.health.gov.au//novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-res Information is changing rapidly and we will endeavour to keep you up to date as information becomes available.

16.01.2022 Pain Explained: Part 4: Did you know Emotions and Beliefs can change the way pain is felt?! Ever noticed that when you are stressed or anxious how your muscles start to tense without you knowing it?? You may feel heavy, fatigued, irritable and your body might feel stiff or locked up and old injuries or concerns start to re emerge or current troubles start to amplify?? This is a common story we see daily in the clinic. So why does this occur???... There is substantial evidence of how attention, emotions, anxiety, depression, stress, fear, expectation and social and cultural factors influence how pain is perceived and managed. Psychosocial factors like these involve both emotion (which tells us how we should immediately react to pain), and beliefs (which attach meaning to the experience). These can amplify how pain is experienced and heighten our reaction, thus creating a vicious cycle of pain and distress. This picture is a great representation of the complexity of pain influences from Physiotherapist, Robin Kerr from Alchemy in Motion, QLD. (My favourite part of it is the line ..... Im sensitive, not broken! Which is so true for so many to remember in our management and can help in overcoming some of the more negative beliefs!)

15.01.2022 The 6 Principles of Pilates perfectly envisioned in this clip: - Concentration - Control - Centering - Flow... - Precision - Breathing These are the most common things we emphasise not only in Pilates but in Physiotherapy exercises but are applicable to all forms of movement from gym exercises to all sports! What makes a great mover look so different are all of these things working in perfect symmetry together. Key points I always cue are : - If you want to make a difference concentrate on the exercise and do it well, dont just do it. - Consistency and control in movement are important - no quick and slow patches. Aim for smooth flowing movement. - Try to stay symmetrical. learn to centre the body to move just the body part required and not go beyond your capability where additional parts move or other muscles try to compensate to assists movements. - Breath-there are better patterns of breath to facilitate movement but at the end of the day just breathing in any way is better than not at all! https://www.facebook.com/soypilates/videos/552313491874359/

15.01.2022 We are looking for a new experienced Physio/Pilates instructor to join us 10-20hrs per week at our practice in Wentworth Point (Sydney Olympic Park) for a mix of private Physio clients and Private/Group Pilates sessions. Please share if anyone knows someone who may be interested in the position. Any enquiries feel free to email me at [email protected]. To all my lovely clients I will still be around as usual! 13.01.2022 Our new home! Happily settling in! Shop 3f, 3 The Piazza, Wentworth Point, 2127.

13.01.2022 Please note we are an exemption to the new limitations on non essential gatherings. We still remain included as an essential service and are included in the essential activities listed below under health care meaning the 2 person rule for public gatherings does not apply to us. Everyone must still adhere to the social distancing limitations as this is encouraged everywhere. This also means that for those under 16yo attending with a family member, interpreters or carers are s...till ok to have the third person attend to assist. We are directing patients to please come direct to their appointments and then return home after. If awaiting your practitioner to be ready for you we are encouraging people to wait on the balcony outside our shop to limit time in our reception area if you wish to have a little more space. We are still asking all patients to sanitise their hands on attendance so feel free to take an alcohol wipe to do whilst you wait or you are welcome to come inside and wash your hands in our facilities. It is a confusing time so we hope this helps clear things up. Thank you!

11.01.2022 Exciting news!! Pilates Update: Australian Physiotherapy Association wins battle to ensure Pilates informed exercises prescribed by Physiotherapists as part of individualised programs will continue to receive private health fund rebates in group and one on one settings!! This has been a long and hard fought battle by the APA since Private Health Insurance (PHI) reforms were announced this year, which previously advised that in keeping w the intention of the natural therapy r...eforms, Pilates only sessions would no longer be funded from 1 April 2019. This reform was designed to eliminate rebates for non evidence based therapies and did non intend to impact physiotherapy , however the review did not differentiate between Pilates informed exercises prescribed by Physiotherapists as part of a treatment program and Pilates offered by fitness instructors in other contexts. The APA have won negotiations to ensure that all parties agree PHYSIOTHERAPY IS PHYSIOTHERAPY despite whether it is hands on therapy or exercise therapy and agreed with the APAs position that exercises drawn from Pilates are acceptable and within the scope of Physiotherapy practice. To ensure the public understand the difference between Physiotherapy based programs and fitness Pilates programs we will be utilising the term Physiotherapy Group Exercise Programs. Classes at our practice will remain unchanged and will still include personalised programs using Studio equipment (reformer, trapeze etc) in conjunction w other exercise props using weights, foam rollers etc, to target specific conditions and goals as assessed in initial assessments. With a Physiotherapist leading the session each individual will perform their own specifically prescribed exercises including Pilates inspired exercises and specific physiotherapy exercises. You will continue to be assessed in sessions w programs adjusted to suit your current requirements and to progress exercises in a safe and timely manner. Notes are always kept reflecting your progress. Physiotherapy advice and self management strategies will be given in sessions to enable you to take empowerment of your health in between sessions. As far as the APA is aware, HCF is the only insurer who has taken a harder approach to the Rules despite the Department of Health Ruling so we encourage members of HCF to contact them directly. 560 Group Therapy Code will continue to be the code utilised if you wish to check with your company. We are extremely grateful to the APA for their strong advocacy on this particular position fighting back to an agreement that respects the expertise and skill of our profession as Physiotherapists!!

11.01.2022 Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy New Year from Waterfront Physiotherapy & Pilates! We will be closed over the holiday periods until January 4th to rest and revive for the new year ahead! Thank you everyone for all your ongoing support this year!

Lauren is trained in pre and post natal care including abdom...inal separation , pelvic and low back pain, sciatica, mid back and rib pain , and thumb pain which are all common issues. 09.01.2022 Heres a little taste of my Course with 2nd generation instructor Blossom Leilani Crawford last week. To get an idea how unique of an experience this was, youll need some Pilates history... Joseph Pilates only officially certified 2 instructors in his lifetime: Kathy Grant & Lolita San Miguel. Blossom was Kathys assistant for 13yrs prior to Kathys death in 2010. Blossom therefore carries the torch for teaching the way Joseph Pilates intended Pilates be taught!

06.01.2022 The APA has received the following advice from the Federal Minister for Health, The Hon Greg Hunt: The Australian Minister for Health has today confirmed that A...LL allied health businesses can continue working and are encouraged to do so. In addition he has indicated that they are now developing full allied health telehealth options within the week for allied health along with all other health and medical services. This will be part of a staged plan. Face to face services for many remain vital so where possible, we encourage you to continue. I thank you for your courage, dedication and care, the Minister said. The APA continues to monitor this changing situation closely and will provide you with advice and guidance as it becomes available.

01.01.2022 Pain explained: Part 3: Did you know that pain is not always an accurate indicator of tissue damage! There are many circumstances we know where it is possible to have any injury and no pain (e.g extreme stress or danger, third degree burns, intoxication, genetic pain insensitivity). We just saw the result of adrenaline and human desire overriding pain in the Tour de France with Philippe Gilbert riding on a further 60km after crashing into a wall and being propelled off his b...ike over a cliff face and going on to ride a further 60km to finish the leg of the race with a fractured knee cap! Equally, you can experience pain without an injury at all, after all we did learn in part two that pain is produced from the brain (e.g phantom limb pain, chronic pain). I often use this case to explain to patients how the brain can misinterpret information provided: A builder aged 29yo came to emergency having jumped down landing on a 15cm nail. The smallest of movements were painful and he required heavy sedation to remove it. However when the boot was removed the miracle was revealed that despite the x-rays demonstrating the nail going through this boot and foot, the nail had penetrated between the toes and the foot was entirely uninjured!
