24.01.2022 In response to the significant social and economic challenges facing Sydney’s West, Western Sydney University is proud to re-launch its ‘Centre for Western Sydney’ tomorrow. The Centre is an innovative research, policy and advocacy hub, that in partnership with community, industry and government, will address the pressing issues of one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. The Centre’s incoming Director, Dr Andy Marks, said the reinvigorated Centre will acknowledge the com...plexities and diversities of Western Sydney and find solutions, together, to the issues that matter to the region, including work, health, education, housing, transport, digital connectivity and arts and culture. Many areas of the West are particularly exposed to the impact of the current recession, due to pre-existing inequities compared to the rest of Greater SydneyThe scale of the challenge requires a renewed approach. The Centre will promote solutions-orientated change through quality research and advocacy. Undertaken by leading experts from a range of fields, the Centre’s work will foreground the lived experiences of the people and communities of this region, said Dr Marks.

21.01.2022 Dr Stacy Blythe is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. A fundamental desire to help people led her to Western Sydney University, where she studied to become a Registered Nurse. Little did she know that that desire to help would fundamentally change both her personal and professional life, guiding her through a Bachelor of Nursing (Honours), a Graduate Certificate in Teaching, a Graduate Certificate in Developmental Trauma, a PhD and most recently ...an MBA! As a research academic, Stacy’s work focuses on the health and well-being of children living in the out-of-home care system and their families (both biological and foster/adoptive). Her insights and passion for this area of research and practice stems from her 15+ years of personal experience as a foster carer and the desire to make a difference. As a foster carer, I have the capacity to nurture and support a limited number of children within my own home. But as a research academic, I have the ability to influence policy and practice with my research, effecting positive change and making a difference in the lives of many children and their families. When I started studying at Western, I had no idea where my educational journey would take me. The support from Western, in the form of academic scholarships and research funding, has enabled me to pursue my passion. With continued support, I know the possibilities are unlimited!

19.01.2022 "Hello from Western Sydney! "I love where I live. To be at home with your mum is to be comforted and nourished. Best Heads, Best Hearts!"... Sameera Nazmin, International Research student #WesternSydney #postcardsfromhome #UNLIMITED

03.01.2022 Congratulations to Rocco Cavaleri, from the School of Health Sciences, who competed last week in the Grand Final of the Asia Pacific 3MT Challenge. Not only is Rocco a PhD student at Western, but he is also an Associate Lecturer and Academic Course Advisor for our Physiotherapy program. The 3MT Challenge gives researchers the opportunity to explain their research to a non-specialist audience in three minutes using only one slide. Rocco’s presentation focused on rapid brain ...mapping, explaining how his study aimed to develop a more efficient method of assessing the human brain by developing a program to predict what a full scan would look like based on only a small number of images. He found that when compared with traditional methods, there were no differences, meaning that scan times could be reduced from two hours to less than two minutes. His team also discovered when using this approach that certain areas of the brain reduced activity during pain. You can watch a video of Rocco’s presentation and view a showcase of all the finalists’ presentations in the link below. Read more - http://ow.ly/jwb550BMMUj See more
