03.01.2022 What holds more phosphorus? Sand or loam? Our budding scientists at the recent Regional Estuaries Initiative, Fertilising the Farm Workshop undertook an exper...iment to find out. In the experiment, both soil types received the same amount of "blue liquid" phosphorus, however the soil type on the left which represents sand, took less applications (or seasons) of phosphorus to reach capacity, whereas the loam (represented on the right), took more applications of phosphorus to reach capacity. This indicates that loam has a greater ability to retain phosphorus than sand, and when both sand and loam reach capacity, any additional application of phosphorus is lost or overflows. This same principle applies to farmers paddocks, once your soil reaches capacity, any extra application of phosphorus cannot be retained by the soil and is lost to the environment when it rains, ending up in our waterways. This is why it's very important to know your soils before you fertilise! The Regional Estuaries Initiative is supported by the State Government's Royalties for Regions Program #waestuaries Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD
