25.01.2022 TWO THUMBS WILDLIFE TRUST SANCTUARIES - KALANDAN and HAMMERS HILL-THE PHOENIX RISING FROM THE ASHES After total devastation due to last summers fires James Fi...tzgerald is rebuilding the infrastructure on his sanctuaries.Although it will be many years before the sanctuaries will be back to their former natural beauty recent rain will ensure good regrowth in Spring .Meanwhile James has been busy building his state of the art koala accommodation . The koalas in care are thriving .During my last visit to take a kangaroo who had recovered from burns back home to the sanctuaries I was lucky enough to be able to help James put out fresh leaf for the in care koalas . Great work James.Thankyou for saving so many koalas. Few people have so much knowledge and experience in observing koalas in their natural habitat and also in ensuring koalas thrive when they need to be in care. See more

25.01.2022 This little Eastern Grey Kangaroo was presented to the clinic after he was found in his deceased mums pouch on the side of the r...oad. A licensed wildlife carer happened to drive past and check pouch and found this little one curled up inside. Often when kangaroos are crossing the road Or feeding on the verge and bright lights start coming at them, may do either of two things: hop away from the bright lights or stop and look straight at them. If its the latter then they often become the victims of a fatal HBC event. If the kangaroo is carrying a joey, the pouch will protect them to a degree, but often they sustain injuries to their legs or toes due to the position of sitting in the pouch and the level of the bumper bar or wheels. Fractures like the one here are unfortunately very common. Treatment and prognosis of the types of fractures are dependent on several things the exact location of the fracture the life stage of the Joey other concurrent injuries that are present the level of expertise from the vet and wildlife carer If you find a deceased native animal on the side of the road, please check the pouch for any joeys. If they do not pass away from the impact of the collision, it may take days for them to slowly shut down from temperature extremes, dehydration and starvation. However only check animals if it is safe to do so - we dont want anyone getting hurt. If you find a Joey, please get it seen by a wildlife vet ASAP so it can be assessed. Many joeys look on the outside but can have internal injuries including fractures. # # # # # # # See more

19.01.2022 Very interesting concept, however, keeping your cats inside or in a cat enclosure outside means that our native species are protected.

19.01.2022 Environmental News October 13 Scientists 'gobsmacked' to see large flocks of rare Gouldian finches in northern Qld: One of the world’s most beautiful birds t...he endangered Gouldian finch - has been recently recorded in flocks of up to 200 in tropical north Queensland, where previously only a few individuals had been reported since last century. ‘’We were absolutely gobsmacked,’’ says Dr Ray Pierce, from the Queensland Gouldian Finch Study (QGFS), of his first encounter with a large flock of the birds inland from Cairns. Pierce, a conservation scientist, and wildlife guide Patrick De Geest lead a small band of citizen scientists who track and study these birds: ‘’Because of expanding pastoralism, altered fire regimes, trapping for aviculture and air sac mites Gouldians had all but disappeared from Queensland,’’ says Pierce, ‘’ but then in 2018 QGFS volunteers began reporting sizeable flocks, found nests and confirmed successful breeding, none of which had been documented in Queensland for decades.’’ By understanding why the birds are now recovering on some properties, QGFS is aiming to develop Gouldian-friendly land management guidelines. Good land management is key, says Dr Don Franklin, who’s studied Gouldian finches for the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory. The fundamental problem in Queensland is that properties are smaller, have been grazed more intensively, and for longer, he says, A bird can have food for 95% of the time but if there’s no food for 5% of the time, it can’t survive so they need to be able to chase rich patches in the landscape. Franklin went on to add that light grazing and relatively infrequent fire are likely key factors in creating the ideal habitat for Queensland populations. ‘’Most areas with breeding birds haven’t burnt for seven or eight years according to a 2019 QGFS report, a comparatively long time for Queensland’s savannahs,’’ he says. Pondering the Gouldian finch’s future in the state, Don is cautiously optimistic. They’re strong fliers and prolific breeders and their ability to recolonise is strong - if the habitat is right. He says. https://www.australiangeographic.com.au//the-return-of-th/

15.01.2022 Community look out alert for a pelican in distress in Kiama, last seen yesterday at Black Beach Please keep an eye out for a pelican who needs urgent assist...ance. Our volunteers will be back out today searching for it, as we were unsuccessful in a catch yesterday. Screenshots of a video sent in by a member of the public, showing a pelican with a large amount of fishing gear causing distress. Theres a significant amount of line, sinkers and hooks stuck in the pelicans bill. This will stop it from feeding and the animal is in desperate need of attention. If you see this bird, please call our hotline immediately on 0431 282 238. Thank you.

10.01.2022 Beside myself to report that there are now 77 orange bellied parrots at Melaleuca breeding grounds, SW Tasmania, in the near-perfect ratio of 39 Females, 38 Mal...es. That's 51 wild returns+26 captive-releases. You might think meh to 77 birds but that's a SERIOUSLY GOOD number for such a critically endangered species. See more

We are licensed and vaccinated Flying-fox and Microbat rescuers/rehabilitators under Wildlife Rescue South Coast Inc. #WRSC Please do not handle any flying-fox or microbat as this could mean a death sentence for the animal. 03.01.2022 Satin Bowerbirds have the most amazing violet/blue coloured eyes! Adult males have an amazing glossy blue-black plumage and a paler beak. Younger males and females are similar in colour and are often referred to as green birds. The upper plumage is olive-green with off-white colouring with dark scalloping below. Both wings are tail are brown in colour. The bill is also brown in colour. Young males may do not commence acquiring their adult plumage until their fifth year and they are not fully attired until they reach the age of 7. Thank you Kay for the photographs.
