23.01.2022 The Knee After the COVID-19 break, many of us are back to playing sports - this brings about a higher risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Two knee injuries that we can experience whilst playing sport or during our activities of daily living are ACL or Meniscal tears. ... ACL - The ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) is one of the knees stabilising ligaments - it prevents the tibia (shin bone) from moving forward off the femur (thigh bone) and prevents the knee from collapsing inwards. Most ACL injuries are non contact injuries often occurring when the knee has twisted, other contact injury mechanisms may be in a tackle or a direct blow to the knee. You may feel a pop, your knee may collapse or it may feeling sore and unstable. Meniscal tears: The menisci are two cartilages on either side of the knee that shock absorb force between the femur and tibia Meniscal tears, similar to ACL tears are often done through twisting / forced torsion through the knee joint, often the knee will be painful, it may lock up and range of motion is often reduced for a short period of time. Treatment: Everyones treatment are rehabilitation will be different depending on their symptoms, the damage and the persons desire activity levels. We recommend you speak to you health care professional to find the best treatment for you! See more
