21.01.2022 Here's a new poem, inspired by a recent visit to Haberfield: Sunday morning queue, formed on lilly pads, each a metre and a half apart, in a pasticerria... in Sydney’s piccola Italia, waltzing back and forth between our pads and the display shelves for a closer scan, we change our minds as often as we change our line-up spots, finally we choose cannoli, biscotti, a cornetto, a flat white and a cappucino; rules of lockdown eased now, we could sit among the nonni and bambini and the generations sandwiched in between, but feel too toey still for grazing with the herd, so we head alfresco to Piazza Federazione in Ramsay St, crunching on the fallen autumn leaves, so will our teeth soon on the pastry and the nuts within, we park ourselves upon a bench, we’re warmed up by the sun, far more splendidly than by the café’s artificial heating, and we get a dose of Vitamin D, to boost our immune systems for this winter of nasty germs about; after years forsaking such sweet experience in leafy places, confined instead to cafes or their tables on the footpath, a lovely rediscovery, and when summer comes, these trees restored to greenness, you’ll find us here, beneath their cooling shade See more

01.01.2022 On 18 March 2020, poet, railway worker, RMT activist and neurodiversity champion Janine Booth set up the Facebook group "CoronaVerses: poems from the pandemic", hoping to provide a forum to address the many issues and experiences that people were facing in the health crisis about to eclipse the world, but not expecting it to attract the volume of verse that it did. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of poems appeared. The idea of an anthology had been in her mind, but she rapidly ...came to a decision to pick a selection from those posted in the first week. She got together with veteran poet Attila the Stockbroker to produce this stunning new book as an act of solidarity and a contribution to the fight against the virus. From the start, there was a mix of poets, including both ‘amateurs’ and established poets. Indeed, you get a sense of the book from the list of biographies including for example one who described herself as ‘geeky neurodivergent, lefty, bisexual cyclist, NHS worker and lifelong feminist killjoy’. All of the 63 contributors demonstrate artistic, social or political passion, a number in relation to disability and autism; there are committed socialists, trade unionists, parents, teachers, social workers, railway workers, artists and film-makers here. The collection is a cry from the hearts and minds of people at the start of this journey into the unknown as the impact of the coronavirus crisis started to hit. We write poems. Sad poems, funny poems, angry poems, touching poems. Formal poems, rhyming poems, free verse and rants. No-one will come away from this book unmoved titles alone convey the depth of feeling - from Untouched but not Unfelt and Collateral Damage, to The New Normal and After the Storm We Dance, readers will find something for them When There Are No Words. Most of the proceeds will be going to We Shall Overcome, a grassroots campaign dedicated to the fight against austerity through holding benefit gigs to alleviate suffering in FoodBankBritain. Priced at 8 in print and 3.99 as an ebook, the anthology, edited by Janine Booth and Attila the Stockbroker,Coronaverses: poems from the pandemic is published by Roundhead Publications and is available online via Amazon and ebook outlets such AppleBooks and Kobo.
