23.01.2022 Spring has sprung! Even though we have totally winter weather today its still a brand new season! Cats can breed all year round but theres a definite increase in activity in the spring time. Male cats may be roaming and looking for mates. Even if your cat is sterilised there can still be fights and encounters over territories when cats are in the prowl. Poor Sebby got bitten on the head and developed an abscess. We shaved him and gave him a cute little bald spot and then... cleaned his wound. Now some antibiotics and he is off home to heal. Probably has a bit of a headache but still smiling and handsome. So please try to keep kittys indoors as much as possible. And call is for special prices on spey and neutering for dogs and cats.
22.01.2022 Fleas, ticks, intestinal worms and heartworm can affect our dogs all year round, however they thrive in warmer weather. Dogs (and cats) can become infected with parasites from the environment, from insect bites and by licking their themselves or other pets. Our infographic lists widely available parasite treatments for dogs so you can see at a glance what it treats and how to use it.... If youre unsure about which products to use for your dog, pop in and speak to one of our friendly vet nurses. #dogs #dogsofperth #parasites #parasiteprevention #fleas #ticks #worms #heartworm #yanchepvet #springhealthdogs

18.01.2022 Puppy Toilet Training - Do's and Don'ts Have you added a new puppy to your family? Teaching your puppy to toilet outside takes a little patience and repetition but with these helpful tips, your home will be fresh and stain-free once again!... DO Take your puppy outside to the same spot first thing in the morning, after every meal and nap, and whenever the puppy has had a period of excitement or play. Look for signs that your puppy needs to go to the toilet such as sniffing, walking away or in circles, scratching at the floor, waiting by the door or being restless. Young puppies will need to be taken outdoors to toilet at least every 4 hours during the night so set your alarm for the next few weeks! Praise and reward your puppy every time they toilet outside. If you catch your puppy in the process of toileting, calmly pick them up and carry them outside. Teach your puppy that it is possible to go to the toilet outside when it is raining or the grass is wet! If you need to leave your puppy alone while you are at work, confine them to an area such as the laundry or kitchen. Create a toileting area away from the puppy's bed using either newspaper, commercial pee pads or a litter tray containing turf. DON'T Never ever punish your puppy for toileting inside. This will only confuse the puppy and delay the process of toilet training. Need advice? We offer free health checks for puppies and kittens. Call us on 9561 2438 or book online. #yanchepvet #puppies #puppyhealth #puppytoileting #puppytoilettraining
18.01.2022 Poor Jessie Rainbow was playing with a bee and had a nasty allergic reaction. She was checked over and given some medication and she is off home to recover further. We see this so often in young dogs. Their curiosity gets them into all sorts of strife!... Bee stings are potentially fatal if your dog has an anaphylactic reaction. Reactions can range from mild to severe, ranging from a small, localised area of redness, to swelling around the face and throat and having trouble breathing. If your dog is stung by a bee, please call us immediately on 9561 2438. #beestings #bees #springtime #puppies #dogs #dogsofperth #yanchepvet
17.01.2022 Meet Mr Wilson, a gorgeous 5-month-old graduate of one of our recent puppy school classes! Mr Wilson was visiting us for a free dental check. Young puppies need frequent dental checks to ensure all their baby teeth are falling out when they should, as well as proper alignment of their erupting adult teeth. We also checked Mr Wilsons eye after his recent entropion surgery with visiting Opthalmology surgeon Dr Rob Harris.... Entropion is an abnormality of the eyelids in which the eyelid rolls inward. This inward rolling often causes the hair on the surface of the eyelid to rub against the cornea resulting in pain, corneal ulcers, perforations, or pigment developing on the cornea which can interfere with vision. Mr Wilson is recovering well and as you can see in our video, he is lapping up the treats and attention! #puppy #puppies #dentalhealth #puppyhealth #yanchepvet #dogsofperth
17.01.2022 We had a visit from beautiful Kitty this week. She was born in Singapore and now lives in Australia. Typical of some Asian cats she has a little stub of a tail and big gorgeous eyes. And a cute little Burmese shape face. Isnt she a pretty Kitty?
17.01.2022 BREED SPOTLIGHT: Russian Blue Russian Blue cats have an extremely dense and soft double coat. They are generally sweet-tempered and loyal cats, who will meet you at the front door and they may even try to follow you on a dog walk! They are social creatures but also enjoy their alone time. They're usually fine while you are away at work but they will insist on plenty of playtime when you get home. 15.01.2022 This is Loopy! A chihuahua x Pug Loopy had her teeth damaged by a well meaning Vet before coming to see us. Her upper canine teeth were clipped off so that they didnt stick into her lower gums. Sadly this left little stumps of teeth with the pulp exposed. This leads to pain and infection and death of the puppy tooth. This is not what should happen to teeth. Ever. Loopy came to see Dr Sam and today she had those damaged puppy teeth removed. When puppy teeth break or become... infected they can end up not falling out when they should - which causes more crowding and the adult canine teeth erupt in the wrong position. 2 teeth shouldnt ever be in the same tooth spot!! So Loopy has a quick anaesthetic and then the damaged teeth were removed surgically - leaving the adult teeth Undisturbed and able to come up normally in their normal position. She is home and had a little meal about an hour after getting home. If you have any concerns about your pets teeth we are here to help. We do free dental checks all year. Every day. Call us if youd like to book in or book online. Www.yanchepvet.com.au
15.01.2022 MAKEOVER MIRACLE! This is Chester. He needed a little bit of a trim so we gave him a makeover! Don't be fooled by his cute looks. Chester objected to having his dreadlocks diminished and wasn't having anyone cut his hair.... His Mum couldn’t find a groomer that had an appointment free and things were getting a bit dire! We don't routinely offer grooming services, however if pets are being uncooperative and are severely matted we want to help. Chester had a sedation and anesthesia and his transformation was complete. We achieved a whole new look! Have a look at his before and after pics. What do you think? #yanchepvet #yanchepvethospital #dogs #dogsofperth #perthdogs
15.01.2022 This courageous little echidna was brought in by a wildlife carer after being hit by a car yesterday. He was very quiet and had a lot of broken quills. Today he had an anesthetic, xrays and an examination. He passed his exam with flying colours and had some medication and some fluids injected under his skin. He was feeling much better after his visit to hospital, and was released back where he was found. (Check out his release video in our next post!)... Did you know An echidnas spines are actually modified hairs. The fur between their spines acts as insulation. Echidnas also have a long life span, living up to 45 years in the wild. #yanchepvet #echidnas #wildlife #westernaustralia
15.01.2022 This is why it is SO important to sterilise rabbits. It is not uncommon for the average female rabbit to have many litters because gestation is only about one month. Each of these litters can have anywhere from three or four babies, to seven, eight, nine, and maybe even more. Not only that, but the mother is physically able to become pregnant again a few days after giving birth. We were heartbroken to read this story but thankful that some of these gentle creatures have be...en rescued. #yanchepvet #yanchepvethospital #rabbits #petrabbits #perthrabbits

13.01.2022 This is young Duke, visiting us for his free dental check! Many changes occur during teething so regular checkups are vital for puppies and kittens. The most common problems we see in puppies are retained teeth and malocclusions (imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed). If a puppy tooth is not positioned correctly it can stay in the mouth and result in the adult tooth erupting alongside it.... Its important to check and act quickly if you notice any abnormalities or changes in your puppys mouth. We provide free dental checks every 2 weeks for puppies and kittens, so if you have recently added a new fur-baby to your family give us a call on 9561 2438. #puppies #kittens #dentalhealth #puppyteeth #yanchepvet

12.01.2022 Darington is a lovely old Tom cat who was rescued by Perth Rescue Angels. He came in to have his neutering done today before rehoming. We noticed his upper canine teeth were broken and infected - we xrayed to check them and he had those painful problematic teeth removed. You can see the big tooth in the left has a much wider pulp cavity in the xray. The wider pulp cavity tells us this tooth broke and became infected and died when he was around 1 year old or less. As teeth ...age the pulp cavity becomes narrowe and narrower. You can see the tooth on the other side has died later in - the pulp cavity is a lot narrower. He will be so much happier with these bad teeth feat with. He is such a sweet boy. He had loads of cuddles from us today as well! See more
12.01.2022 Madi has some problems with her teeth. Her lower canine teeth - the bottom fangs - are sticking into the roof of her mouth. This is a painful condition and can result in abnormal jaw growth as an adult. She had corrective dental surgery and will be checked for the next few months to ensure normal jaw and tooth development. In the second photo you can see the little holes in the upper jaw where the lower teeth are sticking in and causing trauma. This is painful and so we h...ave operated and removed the problem baby teeth. Her adult teeth are more likely to grow in the correct position now. Regular dental checks for puppies and kittens are essential to detect these problems early. We offer free dental checks - please call us on 9561 2438 to book. #yanchepvet #yanchepvethospital #petdentalhealth #dogdentalcare #dogdental

11.01.2022 Ollie came in for some dental work yesterday. First we xray. Then we clean. Then the bad teeth come out. Small breed dogs suffer from dental problems because their mouths are so small and 42 teeth get crowded into that small space!... Although the teeth look clean, many of these teeth that look great on the outside are diseased and have infected bone under the gum. Ollie will be pain-free and happy when we finish all his dental work. #yanchepvet #dentaldisease #dentalhealth #doggydental
11.01.2022 This is Elora. She ate a mango seed and got sick. Very sick! The mango seed got stuck in her stomach and wasn’t going anywhere. Not up. Not down. Yesterday she had an operation to remove the mango seed from her stomach. The surgery was successful and she has gone home for rest and cuddles with her doting family.... Most dogs love mangos and some other fruits. Who would have thought a dog would love mangos so much that she would steal one from the rubbish on the kitchen bench? This tall dog who LOVES mango. So cute but so naughty! So please beware - dogs will get into anything they can. They might not like perfectly good dog food but they’ll definitely steal strange things and gobble them up! #yanchepvet #dogs #perthdogs #dogsofperth

11.01.2022 Carn is 13 years old and came to see us with a severe tummy ache. After some treatment, he pooped out a big piece of rubber toy and felt so much better afterwards. At his age he should know better! We are just so relieved that he didnt need surgery. ... Intestinal obstructions are very serious and can often be fatal. 07.01.2022 Loki is a one year old kitty who was licking at his boy bits and straining to urinate. His Mum acted quickly and brought him in to us for treatment. Loki was unable to urinate and his penis was blocked. This led to a hugely distended bladder and could have resulted in kidney problems if Lokis Mum hadnt responded so urgently. Urinary blockages are caused by the accumulation of minerals in the urinary tract, which can cause obstruction by crystals or stones.... Thankfully we were able to unblock Loki and start some treatment for him at home. He is much happier now! Urethral obstruction is a potentially life-threatening emergency that shouldnt be ignored. Please call us immediately if you suspect a urinary problem with your cat. #cats #urinaryblockage #emergency #catsofperth #yanchepvet
05.01.2022 Look how important dental x-rays are! We thought this dog just had two broken teeth that needed extraction. Can you see the strange shaped thing in the bone on the right hand upper side? It’s called an Odontoma. This is a rare tumour made of teeth material. Left alone it can cause some serious problems with cyst formation and damage to the adjacent bone. In the second image you can see the tooth tumour. It’s a developmental lump that means a tooth forms where it shouldn’t b...e. These can only be seen with dental x-rays. We offer free dental checks. 05.01.2022 This little bearded dragon was lucky enough to have his own ambulance officer bring him in when he was injured. He has a laceration just behind his right ear - so he has been hospitalised for treatment and will be heading off to native animal rescue for ongoing care.

05.01.2022 Daisy has a tooth that stayed below the gum. At first we thought it was just a missing tooth. However you can see in the x-ray that it is hiding under the gum and has caused a cyst to form. These hidden teeth can form cysts in a short period of time. The fluid from the cyst has put pressure on the jaw bone and caused massive erosion of Daisy's jaw. She is not far off breaking her jaw from normal activity. This cyst would have continued to grow and eventually caused a fractur...e. Dr Rebecca Nilsen carefully removed the cyst and the lining. Daisy will recover and the damaged area should gradually repair itself, allowing her to live a long and happy life. Has your pet got missing teeth? Call us on 9561 2438 to book a free dental check and we can check for you. #yanchepvet #yanchepvethospital #petdentalhealth #petdental #dogdentalhealth
04.01.2022 Saffron was out walking in the sunshine and came across a bee. Poor baby came out in hives all over her body. After some treatment and monitoring to be sure no further problems she went home with a lot less bumps and a lot happier. Seems that young dogs, especially Staffordshire bull terriers react very badly to bee stings. Often theres just a dramatic amount of hives and lumps but sometimes there can be a reaction that can cause collapse and difficulty breathing. We are here to help if you need us. If youre out and about and this happens to your dog stay calm and head back home. Any hives or swelling or vomiting or collapse youll be beat off heading to the vet. Enjoy our beautiful sunshine safely this weekend.
03.01.2022 Its a worldwide problem. Just a shout out and a huge thank you to all the Vet teams everywhere who are doing their best to help you and your pets. And thank you to al the wonderful pet parents for their trust and patience.
03.01.2022 Local real estate agent Tracey Ewins from Northern Beaches Realty has made a very generous donation for the care and rehabilitation of our local Blue Tongue Lizards. This little guy was rescued after being attacked by a curious dog. He has multiple bite wounds. So he had xrays to assess for broken bones and we cleaned his injuries. Then he had surgery - seven stitches and various antibiotics and anti inflammatory medications. He is currently in a special heated box and bein...g fed strawberries and a special protein and fat mix. He seems to be very happy about his 5 star treatment. Thanks Tracey for your generous donation. We treat sick and injured wildlife for free. So if you see an injured Bobtail and you can safely catch it please bring in to us for care. Tracey also donated money on a regular basis for care of our local wildlife. Huge thanks to this wonderful lady for her support and generosity. https://www.northernbeachesrealty.com.au/

02.01.2022 Spring is here and the flowers are blooming! We all enjoy the explosion of colour at this time of the year, however with blossoms come bees - and subsequently the risk of your four-legged friend being stung. Walking your dog in the cooler hours when bees are less active will help to reduce the risks. However what should you do if your dog is stung by a bee?... 1. Call us immediately. Keep our number (9561 2438) in your phone and call ahead to let us know you are on the way. You should also keep your local emergency vet number handy for after-hours. 2. If your dog has a known anaphylactic reaction to bee stings or a pattern of escalating reaction to bee stings then we recommend keeping an Epi-pen on hand. Our vets can teach you how to administer the injection and how to maintain breathing in an emergency. First Aid Reactions can range from mild to severe, ranging from a small, localised area of redness, to swelling around the face and throat and having trouble breathing. 1. Keep your dog quiet if possible to prevent the spread of toxins around the body while you are on the way to the vet. 2. Remove the sting (if it is easy to find). 3. Apply a cold compress or face washer to the affected area. Questions If you are concerned about your dogs risk and/or reaction to bee stings call us for a chat on 9561 2438. In the meantime, we hope these tips will help you and your dog to enjoy the warmer weather and the great outdoors safely in spring-time. #dogs #bees #beestings #firstaid #springtime #yanchepvet
01.01.2022 How does your pet shape up? It's estimated that over 40% of Australia's pets are overweight. Use this Body Condition Score tool to help determine your pet's level of risk of obesity.... Overweight pets are likely to live a shorter life, develop joint and mobility and skin problems and have a lower resistance to infection. If your pet does not have an ideal body condition or if you are unsure, we strongly advise you set up an appointment with our vets. They will make an accurate weight assessment and offer you the best advice to help your pet to reach their ideal weight. #yanchepvet #petobesity #healthyweight #petbodyscore #perthpets
