25.01.2022 Victoria has a proud tradition of caring for its forebears in a system of public cemeteries. The Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 (the Act), which commenced on 1 July 2005, governs the operations of Victoria’s cemetery and crematoria sector. The Act replaced the Cemeteries Act 1958. The Act was most recently amended in 2015 to provide cemetery trusts with additional options for managing the limited tenure cremated remains of veterans. More information is available on the Ve...teran's cremated remains page. The current and previous Acts are available on the Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents website: click on ‘Victorian law today’, select ‘Acts’ and then search for ‘cemeteries’. Cemeteries and Crematoria Amendment Bill 2009 Second reading speech The Cemeteries and Crematoria Amendment Bill 2009 made amendments to the Act to ensure cemetery and crematoria services in Victoria are well placed to meet the needs of our communities and future generations by: improving the governance and accountability of cemetery trusts, focusing especially on the large entities that report to parliament under the Financial Management Act 1994 introducing Class A and Class B cemetery trusts introducing the annual cemetery levy payable by Class A cemetery trusts making some housekeeping changes to improve the administration of the Act. If you have questions regarding the Act and its implications to our local cemeteries, please do not hesitate to contact Jan Parker at [email protected] Kind regards, Cyndi Gleeson Chairperson Yarrawonga and District Cemetery Trust https://www2.health.vic.gov.au//cemeteries/legislation/act

20.01.2022 Condition of the Yarrawonga Cemetery Recent criticism (on Facebook) of the state of the cemetery is, to some extent, justified. But the fact is that, try as we might, the Cemetery Trust is simply unable, by itself, to maintain the large cemetery in pristine condition. The Trust comprises seven volunteer members whose physical, financial and time resources are limited and insufficient to fully and consistently maintain the five cemeteries for which we are responsible in addi...tion to Yarrawonga’s, the Trust covers the Burramine, Bundalong, Wilby and Peechelba cemeteries. The Trust has received from government a grant for limited capital works and the Shire recently assisted with a clean up of waste materials and large vegetation, for which we are grateful. Otherwise, the Trust is financed entirely by charges for internments, which we have kept low, and maintained entirely by Trust members assisted by the limited numbers who attend our working bees (our last attracted six volunteers). We are grateful for this assistance and for constructive feedback, and are particularly gratified by the positive comments, including offers of involvement in our working bees, responding to the criticism. The Trust is developing a strategic plan for enhancement of the cemetery, for which community input will be sought, and subject to our financial capacity will continue to make capital improvements, including an irrigation system and new and revamped gardens. We welcome comments and contributions from Yarrawonga and district residents, which can be made on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/Yarrawonga.District.Cemetery.Trust/ Our next working bee will be advertised widely and your assistance there will be welcomed. As one of our members says, It takes a village to raise a child, butit takes a village to honour our origins and the people who settled our community.

18.01.2022 Mary Gorman (1795-1893).....what do we know of this Pioneer fore lady of our community?? Are you related to Mrs Mary Gorman?

17.01.2022 Looking forward to our amazing community getting behind the Committee and assisting in making our cemetery a place of peace and beauty for our loved ones.

17.01.2022 Don’t forget our working bee on Sunday 20th October. Many hands make light work. Thank you and see you there!

12.01.2022 Come along and help the community

09.01.2022 Last Thursday, a group of volunteers from Community Corrections undertook a major clean up of our Yarrawonga Cemetery. Unfortunately, they were faced with conditions that no one should have to encounter. Used condoms in the toilets and sharps containers discarded around our loved ones graves. This is simply not acceptable. The Cemetery Trust Committee asks that all local people be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the Police. We are all volunteers who are doing our best to care for our loved ones final resting place. Please help us to help our community.

07.01.2022 How wonderful is our community ! Thank you to those who came and assisted at our working today. What a difference you have made! Also a huge thank you to our lovely locals who drop by during the week to tidy up on a regular basis. Yarrawonga & District Cemetery Trust Committee
