19.01.2022 Sri Lanka will reopening its airports for foreign tourists from January 21, following a successful pilot programme to assess the country’s capability in managing tourists under a bio bubble amid the pandemic, with the expectation of bringing a maximum of 2,500 travelers to the country per day, according to Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga. Under the bio bubble, all arriving travellers must stay in one of 40 certified hotels for the first 14 days of their trip. These hotels will not accept any local guests nor local events. After this period, travellers are free to move to their hotel of choice and mingle with locals.

Maheshi Ramasamy is the daughter of two scientists. Her mother is Prof. Manthri Samaranayake Ramasamy. An alumnus of Visakha College, Colombo, Samaranayake received a first class honors degree in Zoology from the University of Colombo and later came to the University of Cambridge on a Commonwealth Scholarship. She then became the first Sri Lankan to receive a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. She married Ranjan Ramasamy, a Tamil scientist who had come to Cambridge University from Sri Lanka for postgraduate studies.

08.01.2022 A part of the fights against a new mutant strain of COVID-19, Australia will lower the cap on the number of international arrivals and introduce additional rules and conditions related to air travel, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced. Mr Morrison said the national cabinet had decided on Friday to take "a number of actions" that relate to quarantine and flights to "reduce and de-bulk the risk in terms of exposure to the new UK strain".
