22.01.2022 Have you heard about ELLA? ELLA is a digital, play-based language learning program for preschool children which stands for ‘Early Learning Languages Australia’. The apps were developed with language and early childhood professionals and this Australian Government initiative inspires children by driving a genuine interest in a new language and culture. This year, we have introduced ELLA into our preschool program for our Coolibah room (4-5 years) as we believe it is important ...for the children to have an appreciation of and respect for different cultures. The ELLA journey includes seven apps that focus on different topics which draw on the interests and experiences of young children, such as celebrations, cooking experiences, art, building and role-play. The program introduces children to learning a new language via interactive tablet/iPad apps. In the apps, the children meet a cast of characters called the Polyglots, who introduce the children to words, sentences and songs in another language through play-based learning. Throughout the year, our Early Childhood Teacher Cindy and Assistant Molly will be introducing the children to different languages and dialects, which will encourage appreciation of linguistic diversity through this program. We are excited to be starting off with Japanese!

11.01.2022 Important Update: Based on improvements to air quality today we are likely to be reopening some Early Learning Centres and Vacation Programs tomorrow but a final assessment will be made at each site and communicated on our website, Facebook and via SMS by 7am tomorrow. 09.01.2022 At YMCA Belconnen, we are extremely proud of our diverse team and we embrace the many different cultures we have within our centre. As a team, we often celebrate our birthdays, events and other special occasions but today, we had a team lunch together and each educator cooked a dish that represented their culture to share with the team. Some of the AMAZING dishes we had were Korean Pancakes, Colombian Guacamole, Ensaymada (Cheesy Filipino Bread) Bangladeshi Haleem, Panettone ...and Ice Cream, Prawn Salad, Coxinha (Brazilian Chicken Croquettes), Chicken Tikka, Napolitaine Shortbread from Mauritius, Potato Bake, Vegemite, fairy bread, Pappadums, Naan Bread. Just to name a few!! Team Belconnen does such an amazing job each day with the children that it is nice to spoil ourselves now and then! What a fabulous way to end a fabulous week!

08.01.2022 SHOUT OUT TO TEAM BELCONNEN Our team were treated to a chocolate morning tea this morning to thank them for their outstanding commitment and passion for their roles at the centre, particularly over the last 2 weeks. Team, Milena and I are so grateful to you all. Your efforts to go above and beyond for our families and children is incredible. You are all stars in our eyes ... 07.01.2022 We were invited down to Kangara Waters Retirement Village to help the residents decorate their Christmas tree today!! What an amazing opportunity this was for all involved. Coolibah did an amazing job with the tree decorating and we even got to sing Christmas Carols with the residents joining in!! It was beautiful seeing some of the interactions between the children and residents and we are excited to let you all know that there will be plenty more of this in 2020!! Kaitee stayed back to meet with the Activities Coordinator to discuss a program we will be implementing in 2020 between Belconnen YMCA and Kangara. We are VERY excited to have this embedded into our centres program starting in February!!

06.01.2022 World Autism Awareness Day

05.01.2022 Our Jarrah Preschool room has been focusing on their insect project for a few weeks now. This journey started off with one of our friends from Jarrah, sharing and bringing in some caterpillars which he found on his lemon tree at home! This sparked many different conversations around their habitats, what they eat and what they like to do so, Jarrah got researching and found many answers to their questions through reading some informative insect books. We even made our own encl...osure for our new friends from a recycled fish tank. The children in Jarrah were quick to nurture and show interest in our new insect friends and since then, we have had many more insect friends come and join us from some of our other Jarrah friends’ gardens! We are so proud to share with you all that not only are we now caring for a new little caterpillar and a snail BUT our original caterpillars (which started this whole interest) are now all snug in their own little cocoons!!! Watch this space for more to come!!!

03.01.2022 Happy Lunar New Year from Belconnen ELC!!!! We have had a very eventful week this week, celebrating Lunar New Year within our centre. Our celebration consisted of a range of experiences such as creating our own Money Tree for good luck, cooking experiences, creating our own paper lanterns, fans and Norigea (traditional Korean accessories) as well as watching many dance and other performances. ... We would like to say a particular thank you to our wonderful educator Shirley who taught us all about the Lunar New Year and its different celebrations across Asia. Each room in our centre contributed to our celebration in one way or another, making this whole week an authentic, warm and respectful way to come together to celebrate. May this year bring each and every one of you all the happiness, health and love. Happy Lunar New Year!!

Wiradjuri Echoes joined us to share Cultural dances and stories and Cherie, our Music teacher, got the children and families up with some drumming and amazing singing. It is so important for children to feel they belong in a community and we feel very lucky to have an amazing community at YMCA Belconnen with a diverse range of talents and perspectives.
