17.01.2022 Today is World Prematurity Day, an internationally recognised day to raise awareness for the tiny, vulnerable premature babies born each year. The Royal's Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the largest in NSW and cares for more than 1,000 premature and critically-ill babies every year. Last year, Joe Blackwell was one of these premature babies cared for by The Royal. He was born 9 weeks early with a serious heart condition. Sadly, the combination of his prematurity and hi...s heart issue proved too much for him to overcome and after a very brave fight, he passed away aged just 5 weeks and 1 day. Joe's parents Mike and Jayne, went on to lead the fundraising of over $180,000 for the NICU to help other premature babies and as their way to thank the staff for their incredible care. Today, we celebrate Joe's legacy and acknowlegde the fight and that all premature babies endure and the incredible lengths the staff in the NICU go to to care for them. You can support the NICU today with a donation to https://www.royalwomen.org.au/24spinathon Your donation will directly help premature babies with the purchase of an ECG monitor for the unit. #worldprematurityday

13.01.2022 February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Clodagh Guest is one of 400 women of all ages treated for gynaecological cancers at The Royal Hospital for Women each year. In December 2019 Clodagh was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at just 34 after an intense pain in her side. Just days later she was being treated by the gynaecological oncology team at The Royal. After six round of chemotherapy and two surgeries, Clodagh is now half way through completing twelve months maintena...nce treatment and has a cancer drug infusion every three weeks in the chemotherapy room. Clodagh is so grateful for the support from the team that helped her get through such a challenging time. The staff at the Royal certainly showed extraordinary care during my treatment. I am so grateful to my oncologist Professor Michael Friedlander who prepared the treatment schedule that has prolonged my life. He was so positive and straightforward. I also got to know the nurses all so well, as they work on both post-surgery wards and the chemotherapy room. Jenny Duggan is in charge of the chemotherapy and has been the most incredible support - she was so happy to help me with any issues, either big or small. Ovarian Cancer is a disease that can affect all women, whatever their age, culture and lifestyle, and it is very difficult to detect. Unfortunately often by the time it is detected it has spread or grown. In support of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we are fundraising for a vital signs monitor for he gynaecology department as the unit. You can read Clodagh's full story and make a donation via www.royalwomen.org.au/clodagh #ovariancancerawareness #royalwomen #womenshealth

11.01.2022 This week is Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness week. Currently in Australia 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men will experience perinatal depression or anxiety. Thanks to generous donors, The Royal Hospital for Women Foundation was able to fund a full time perinatal psychologist, Elloise Brake, in April 2019. Since the position started at The Royal, Elloise has offered over 700 sessions to those who have needed support. There have been 157 referrals to the service from acr...oss The Royal. Having this type of support for women and families at The Royal has never been more important than during the COVID 19 pandemic as women have experienced significant changes to their support networks as friends and family have been unable to travel and provide support as often planned. The Foundation-funded perinatal clinical psychology service offers a unique and exciting opportunity to enhance the maternity care received by women at the Royal Hospital of Women. The free service supports women through a variety of concerns that can be accentuated by the perinatal period including: existing & new mental health challenges, adjustment to parenting, identity & role changes, birth trauma, unplanned pregnancy, experiences of newborn intensive care, relationship strain, experiences of infertility & loss. Supporting the mental health of pregnant women and new mothers is crucial for the wellbeing of infants, families and society as a whole. - Elloise Brake RHW Perinatal psychologist You can help support perinatal psychology services at The Royal with a tax-deductible donation via https://www.royalwomen.org.au/perinatalmentalhealth

08.01.2022 Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science and we are celebrating by recognising the incredible work of the team in The Fertility and Research Centre here at The Royal Hospital for Women. "As an embryologist, I help to create embryos in the laboratory to achieve a pregnancy through the IVF process. To be directly involved in demystifying the science behind infertility, and help patients achieve their dream to become parents, is what drives me to do the work tha...t I do. When completing my bachelor’s degree half of my year was made up of females however most of them never pursued a career in science as it has always been perceived as a male dominated field. I hope to inspire young girls, by showing them that women play a vital role in science and medicine. The Royal’s Fertility and Research Centre is the first dedicated onco-fertility centre in Australia. We can now give hope to women and couples whose fertility has been impacted by cancer treatments. It’s really rewarding work." 02.01.2022 Nicole and Youssef Dib have not only experienced having a baby in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at The Royal once, but they have had both of their children, Aaliyah and Jibreel spend time in the NICU receiving life-saving care. In November 2018, Aaliyah was born at 33 weeks and spent four weeks under the care of the dedicated team in the unit. Then one year later in November 2019 their son Jibreel was born at 25 weeks and needed to stay in the NICU for five months before h...e was able to be at home with his family. Take a look at some of the photos from their journey below. Nicole and Youseff are so grateful for the work of the NICU that saved their two babies that they have created a fundraising page in celebration of their first and second birthday www.royalwomen.org.au/AaliyahJibreel Without the equipment & super heroes in the NICU my little boy wouldn’t have stood a chance. Today I am raising funds to help the Royal invest in desperately needed new equipment that will help save lives and give the little fighters, like my son Jibreel, a chance to live You can take a look at Nicole and our other fundraiser pages via www.royalwomen.org.au/our-fundraisers
