24.01.2022 20 YEARS ago today, Eric "The Eel" Moussambani from Equatorial Guinea inspired the world. Exemplifying the Olympic spirit, Eric proved you dont have to be the fastest to be one of the greatest. On September 19 2000, Eric found himself with the eyes of the world on him when his only two rivals in his 100m freestyle heat were disqualified, leaving him to swim alone. Having never swam in an Olympic-sized pool before Eric struggled to complete the distance so much so that off...icials contemplated diving in to rescue him in the final metres. The crowd at the Sydney Olympic Park aquatic centre roared in support of Eric and helped to get him to the wall in a time of 1.52, more than 50 seconds behind the slowest swimmer in the rest of the heats. But it was Erics determination and heart that saw him become a global sensation. Do you remember Eric the Eel? Well never forget his smile lighting up the Olympic Stadium when he led Equatorial Guinea into the Closing Ceremony! Relieve his Olympic feats with this wonderful video.

13.01.2022 A VERY special morning as the Olympic Cauldron is reignited in Cathy Freeman Park for the 20-Year Anniversary of the #Sydney2000 Olympic Games. Two young Australian athletes, Tenayah Logan, a basketballer with the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence program, and Athletics Paralympian Tamsin Colley, who competed at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, were given the honour of relighting the Cauldron. Joining them were Olympic and Paralympic heroes Ian Thorpe and Louise Sauvage and AOC President John Coates. Golden Girl Cathy Freeman also delivered a special video message as she stays in isolation in Melbourne.

By bringing the colour, energy and excitement to the Games, Australians everywhere played a role in making the #Sydney2000 Olympics the best Games ever. 02.01.2022 16 SEPTEMBER 2000 . . . the day an Aussie legend is born. On this day 20 years ago Ian Thorpe smashed his own world record and sealed the nations first gold medal of the Games in the mens 400m freestyle all at the age of just 17. On the first day of competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and just an hour removed from his first gold, 'Thorpedo' strikes again. In what will be widely considered one of the greatest swimming races ever, Thorpe anchors the men's 4x100m relay ...team of Michael Klim, Chris Fydler and Ashley Callus, and famously reels in American Gary Hall in the final metres on the way to another gold medal and world record. Thorpe goes on to claim three gold and two silver medals, making him the most successful athlete at the Sydney Games. Do you remember watching this incredible day unfold?

Sydney's home of major events ANZ Stadium will host the A-League Grand Final rematch between Sydney FC and Melbourne City FC on Wednesday 30 December as part of an 18-match 8-day Festival of Football to open season 2020/21. The Sydney FC v Melbourne City event will be a Double-Header, with the clubs also doing battle in the W-League competition on the same evening.
