25.01.2022 Our Regional Weeds Committee (RWC) has been active this week, discussing collaborative weed management with Transport NSW, and hearing from the DPI Invasive Species Research Team about their current and future projects; touching on how LLS and the RWC can help to inform future research. The day was topped off by a site visit to a parthenium weed site outside of Parkes. With support from Parkes Shire Council and DPI, ongoing surveillance and management of the site will ensure we minimise spread outside of the current site and move to eradicate it from the area. #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #nospaceforweeeeeds NSW DPI Biosecurity Transport for NSW Bogan Shire Council Lachlan Shire - The Heart of NSW Forbes Shire Council Parkes Shire Council Dubbo Regional Council Narromine Shire Weddin Shire Council @NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service

11.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who took part in our Spring Birdwatching Competition. Officially launched on Threatened Species Day (September 7th), the competition spanned across five weeks during which entrants surveyed birds within our region. Each participant received a birdwatching kit to assist with birdwatching techniques and identifying of the region's birds. 28 prizes were on offer, representing the 28 significant woodland birds found in the Central West. The competition align...ed with and focussed on the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater, one of Central West NSW rarest birds. The Regent Honeyeater https://bit.ly/3nLdoY6 forages and breeds in the Central West, however, this stunning nectar-feeding bird is part of a population of less than 500 across Eastern Australia, and August through to December is the perfect time to head out to try and find this stunning bird in our woodlands. 47 competition entrants observed a staggering 2700+ birds across 60 surveys. A total number of 127 species were reported, 14 of which were threatened species, a fantastic result! Technology was embraced with all participants using the Birdata App to record and submit surveys, contributing to the invaluable, Australia-wide citizen science program. The most common bird recorded across all the surveys was the Galah and the Welcome Swallow was present in the largest numbers. The range of species observed during surveys was incredibly diverse, a testament to the wide range of habitats found in Central West NSW. Reporting of the threatened Magpie Geese in the region’s wetland areas and the Painted Honeyeater of the open forests, are great examples of the diversity of bird species this region supports. Lauren Walters, of Forbes, was the lucky recipient of the HD 10x42 Vortex Binoculars, congratulations Lauren! Happy birdwatching #birdwatching #threatenedspeciesday #Landcare #NLP BirdLife Australia This project is supported by Central West Local Land Services through funding from the Australian Government's National Landcare Program. 05.01.2022 With the humidity and warm weather, it is once again prime flystrike season. When conditions are optimal and susceptible sheep are present, low densities of blowflies can cause extensive flystrike. The blowfly females search for susceptible sheep, particularly those with odour and/or fleece rot damage in damp fleece to lay their eggs; they can mature up to 200 - 300 eggs in each ovarian cycle and lay a new batch of eggs every 4 - 8 days. There are many ways in which flystr...ike can be prevented and managed... Short term prevention includes: Strategic chemical application Crutching Shearing Controlling worms and dags Correct tail length While long term prevention includes: Breeding to reduce flystrike susceptibility - Select rams with low wrinkle, low dag and low breech cover ASBV’s - Assess ewes for fleece rot, wrinkle, dags and breech cover - Develop a breeding strategy - Assess your lambs and make a decision about mulesing and hogget classing Flystrike prevention is not just about applying chemical. We urge producers to consider using the Flyboss ‘flystrike decision support tools’ when deciding how to approach flystrike on their farm > www.flyboss.com.au READ MORE > https://bit.ly/2ImIrdT
