11.01.2022 Fantastic to hear the Disability Voices Tasmania program will continue for the next three years! Below is a statement from DVT, including some important words ...from Project Coordinator Fiona Strahan: The National Disability Insurance Agency has confirmed its financial support of a three-year program to build the collective voice of the state’s people with disability. This follows a 12-month pilot project conducted by Disability Voices Tasmania which engaged with people with disability and their supporters across the state. It is not widely known that Tasmania has one of Australia’s highest rates of disability, with an estimated 119,500 people or 23.7 per cent of the population have some form of disability. The initiative’s Project Coordinator, Fiona Strahan, believes this is the tip of the iceberg. ‘What does it mean to experience disability?’ she asks. ‘To give a simple answer, it’s not having access and inclusion. For example, if a person can’t enter a public building because they are aged, or pushing a pram, or using a wheelchair, society has denied them access, not their ‘disability.’ ‘The causes,’ says Fiona, ‘are a combination of unconscious planning, misinformation and societal attitudes towards disability.’ Part of the problem is that people think they need to do something ‘special’ for people with ‘special’ needs. People with disabilities don’t want to be seen as ‘special’. They want to be equal, which means having the same degree of access as anyone else. You know, if half the population were blind, we would be living in an entirely different environment. Everything would be set up to assist people with a vision impairment.’ ‘Part of the problem with disability is that it takes so many forms that our messages become fractured and diluted. But whatever the type of disability, we deserve basic human rights. The ability to live our lives as richly as anyone else. Equality. Disability isn’t a ‘fault’. Fault lies in some of the decisions we’re making as a society. The barriers we fail to recognise. This isn’t due to a lack of empathy, it’s due to a wealth of ignorance.’ Strahan points to public thirst for lurid or heroic stories about people with disabilities that invoke pity and at worst, resentment, disguised as admiration. She says most of these stories, in varying degree, represent devaluation, objectification and exclusion. ‘One of our primary roles during the next three years is to empower people with disability to use their voices to raise awareness of the collective experience of barriers and exclusion. Through education, we will also strengthen the citizenship skills of people with disabilities so that they can influence social and economic policies.’ She says, ‘If people understand what the real barriers to equality there are then attitudes will change. Attitude shifts will drive practical initiatives that are long overdue for those with any form of disability.’ Perhaps Fiona’s key point is that for all we pay service to, sympathise with and even champion the rights of people with disability, it’s not ‘disability rights’ at issue. It is basic human rights.

10.01.2022 USE COMPOSTABLE - plant based product rather than plastic and can be "digested" by bacteria in composting conditions (eg home compost bins or composting facilities). To be classified as "compostable" it must meet certain conditions such as breaking down within a particular time frame, can't leech harmful residues or be toxic to worms.

07.01.2022 February 20th at the law school. There has been a long-running debate in academic, philosophical and professional circles about bias in the media. Peter Manning undertook a critical analysis of the Sydney Morning Herald's foreign correspondents reporting of the conflict in Palestine under occupation, first from the British after the First World War and then by the Jewish Agency from 1948 onwards until today. Come and hear what he has to say. https://www.utas.edu.au//2/february/representing-palestine

05.01.2022 HAPPENING RIGHT NOW Sustainable Timbers Tasmania have rolled bulldozers into the Que River rainforest in the Tarkine. The Australian government is in breach of the World Heritage Convention by logging these ancient forests. These forests are absolutely critical in storing carbon and logging them will release massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. We encourage Rebels to head up to support the camp! We also need to flood Peter Gutweins office with calls that this is NOT... OKAY. Also head on over to the Bob Brown Foundation page and show some love and support! Contact details: Ph: 6165 7650 Email: [email protected] Online: www.premier.tas.gov.au/contact_your _premier Thanks to Extinction Rebellion See more

05.01.2022 Very important that we get a crowd to protest the logging of the Tarkine after the loggers moved in yesterday. Many of us cannot go to the Tarkine but we can support those on the ground up there.
