25.01.2022 Williamstown's own maestro Doug Heywood and wife Alex have got behind my re-election campaign. Doug is a former Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year.

25.01.2022 Renovation of the Williamstown Cricket Ground will commence towards the end of September. It only has to get past the Budget approval and the contract let for the refurbishment. The Williamstown Football Club has been asking the Council to make the playing surface safer during the wet winter months...... 24.01.2022 Giving food and licensed premises a boost! Hobsons Bay City Council has been busy during the past few weeks installing barriers on footpaths to allow cafes, restaurants and licensed premises to trade more effectively during the coronavirus pandemic. Some businesses have also been allowed to expand into street car parks, such as in Nelson Place, Williamstown, the Stag’s Head Hotel in Williamstown and outside Two Birds Brewing in Spotswood.... This was part of council’s Budget strategy to help businesses recover from the disruptions to their operations caused by the virus. They are part of the Hobsons Bay Has Heart business program.

24.01.2022 I have now set a record for the longest serving councillor on the Hobsons Bay City Council. Yesterday, I was elected to the council in a tight battle for Strand Ward, along with Jonathon Marsden and Pamela Sutton-Legaud. It was my seventh successive council victory, spanning more than 21 years on the council after first being elected with Angela Altair on March 16, 1999.... By the time I finish this four-year term, I will have completed more that 25 years serving the residents of Hobsons Bay. Yesterday afternoon, I was sworn in as a councillor in the Williamstown Town Hall, along with four of my six other colleagues. I look forward to working with Jonathon and Pamela, but also Tony Briffa, Daria Kellander, Matt Tyler and Diana Grima. 24.01.2022 The extension of the basketball/netball centre in Altona Meadows is taking shape. It is pointless further extending the Altona Sports Centre when there is clear demand for extra courts at the eastern end of the municipality. Otium told us the growth of basketball in particular meant that HBCC needed to build two new courts every five years to cater for the growing demand.... The obvious site is the Williamstown High School site in Pasco St, next door to the existing court/gymnasium. Now is the time to begin the forward planning... 23.01.2022 Mobil is celebrating 70 years in Altona today with an amazing cake.

23.01.2022 Ratepayers will see a host of outlandish promises among election candidates as their material hits your letterboxes this week. I don’t make hollow promises when it comes to council elections. At the 2016 election, I committed to extending the Altona Sports Centre to increase the number of basketball/netball courts.... I also said I would pursue more sports grounds and playing surfaces in Hobsons Bay and upgrading Digman Reserve. All of those projects are well under way. When Council approved the Sports Facility Needs Analysis in June, 2018, it identified $95 million needed to be spent on projects up to 2028. In just three budgets since then, Council has already spent or committed to spending more than $55 million on facilities. It is the largest capital investment in sports in the history of Hobsons Bay and sets us up for decades to come. Just bear in mind: healthy bodies helps foster healthy minds! 22.01.2022 Another business getting support in Strand Ward is Two Birds Brewery in Hall Street, Spotswood. Through the Hobsons Bay Business Has Heart program, the popular brewery has an outdoor area in the parking bays on the street. Council provided the barriers for the decking and Two Birds has made it look such an appealing place to have a drink and food.... You can easily see this becoming a permanent outdoor fixture, particularly during summer. 22.01.2022 I just got elected to a record seventh term on Hobsons Bay City Council.

21.01.2022 Congratulations to the locals who got gongs in the Australia Day Honours announced today: Newport’s Jenny Mitchell; Maria Dimopoulos, of Altona; Sue Sofarnos, Williamstown, for services to lacrosse; Jim Markovski, also of Williamstown; and my good mate Paulie Stewart, of Williamstown, ex-Painter and Dockers lead singer and fellow Shenandoah tragic!

21.01.2022 Williamstown Junior Football Club Renovations- The Juniors now have great surfaces on both ovals and competition grade floodlights to allow night games to be played. The social rooms have been nicely renovated. I am sure they will enjoy the new social facilities for hosting and visiting sides.... The works at Bayside have been jointly funded by Hobsons Bay City Council and the State Government. With three new tennis courts, resurfacing of two netball courts and various other works, it has been a $2.5 million development. 21.01.2022 It’s time to start fixing up a few roads in South Kingsville. A few years ago, I was outvoted when I found the planned renewal of a South Kingsville street was being bumped in favour of a Newport street. I was concerned about the inequity of the distribution of works within the ward.... A number of the South Kingsville streets have deteriorated even further since then and if I am re-elected on October 24, I will make sure we spend the money to fix them up. I will endeavour to keep on their back to ensure we can finally get these long overdue works completed... 20.01.2022 As an ardent heritage advocate, I know Council faces a big cost conundrum when it gets around to restoring the Williamstown Mechanics Institute to ensure its 150-year-old structural fabric is properly preserved. But equally, people have told me over the years the restoration must also be at a level which maximises Williamstown Musical Theatre Company performances and provides comfort to its patrons, plus not compromise the important work of the Williamstown Historical Society... in preserving local history. Council plans to spend considerable funds in coming budgets on the Mechanics Institute, but the danger is that it will only partially restore the building to its old glory and only provide certain amenity inside. The Mechanics Institute was originally built on the site in Electra Street as a hall with library and reading rooms in 1860, with further additions in 1869, 1880 and 1890. Since the 1950s, the WMTC and WHS have occupied the building. Patrons attending WMTC have often complained about the quality of seating in the theatre, arguing that it must be improved as a bare minimum. And they say there should be no compromises on the basic infrastructure needed to provide performances. Cutting corners now could mean it costs twice as much to fix them up down the track. The Mechanics Institute is arguably the second most significant public building in Hobsons Bay, behind the Williamstown Town Hall, and has been the scene of many important performances since the late 19th Century. 19.01.2022 I went to the Spotswood Football Club’s Hall of Fame presentation night in the Williamstown Town Hall. Michele Langlands did a great job in her first major gig as president. But probably the highlight was seeing Roy Picone being inducted as a Legend of the club. At 92, he was born a year after the club was established. And he wrote a book on the club’s history for the occasion.

19.01.2022 The upgrade of Armstrong Reserve in Newport has set a new standard for community parks. Hobsons Bay City Council has been progressively improving its parks and playgrounds. During 2020-21 Budget discussions, the redesign of Maclean Reserve in Williamstown was proposed for this financial year, with construction the following year.... I understand an initial design will soon be developed as a starting point for a conversation with the local community. I recall that when the existing playground at Maclean Reserve was built about 20 years ago soon after I was first elected to council, it was ahead of its time, but it is now looking a bit tired. And as council has showed with Armstrong Reserve, there is so much more which can be added in to community park spaces to make them more appealing to residents. If re-elected to council, I will be making sure those community consultations begin soon. To contact Peter, call 0401 158 636, email [email protected] or visit www.peterhemphill.com.au/news/ for more information. #hobsonsbay #strandward #peterhemphill

19.01.2022 SAVE THE WILLI RSL. Anzac House has decided to close the Williamstown RSL on January 3. A meeting has been called for Monday, December 5, at 6.30pm by the local sub-branch to discuss the issue. It we will be held at the RSL on the corner of Ferguson Street and Melbourne Road. Nearly 100 years of history goes out the door with RSL Victoria's decision. I encourage the local community to come along on Monday night to support the local RSL sub-branch committee. We need to save our RSL.

19.01.2022 Spotswood Football Clubrooms demolished The football and cricket club pavilion at the Donald McLean Reserve in Spotswood bit the dust last week. Construction of the replacement building will begin straight away and should be completed by next year.... It is part of a long overdue $8 million redevelopment of facilities at the reserve, which include renovation of both ovals, construction of multifunction tennis and netball courts and renewal of the car parks and more landscaping. Some funding to the project has been provided by Westgate Tunnel builders, CPB Contractors and John Holland, after heavy representations by the Council... 18.01.2022 The Powerhouse Rugby Club now has a new home at the Paisley campus of Bayside College. Work has been completed on two new rugby pitches and changerooms on the southern side of the school grounds. The $2.5 million development was jointly funded by Hobsons Bay City Council and the State Government and includes two cricket pitches, ground irrigation system and drainage, plus competition grade floodlights.... Hobsons Bay City Council has begun works to formalise car parking outside the college on Blenheim Rd. Powerhouse Rugby Club will now vacate Lofts Reserve in Newport West, freeing up two grounds there for the Williamstown CYMS Football Club next season. I must thank former Member for Williamstown Wade Noonan for helping Council make the Paisley sportsground development possible. 18.01.2022 Peter’s Priorities Too many candidates make grand promises they cannot possibly keep. I will not make commitments I don’t think I can deliver. However, I will commit to delivering the best outcome for the ratepayers of Hobsons Bay. As co-chair of HBCC’s Active and Inclusive Communities Portfolio Advisory Committee, I am pleased the Council has funded an extensive array of sporting and open space facilities since June last year.... About $31 million was allocated in the 2019-20 Budget alone, some with funding contributions from the State Government. Another $6.4 million in contracts have already been let for 2020-21... 17.01.2022 BETTER PLACES SPOTSWOOD AND SOUTH KINGSVILLE There is just a week or so left for residents, business and property owners in Spotswood and South Kingsville to have their say on what Hobsons Bay City Council can do to spruce up the area. The council is running a Better Places place-based design program to improve the quality of life in Spotswood and South Kingsville, similar to the process just completed for Laverton.... The SSK Better Places program will be a bit more complex than the Laverton project, as there is more industry located in the area and broader strategic planning issues to resolve. Community input will be incorporated into a draft vision for the area by February or March, with the final Better Places Spotswood and South Kingsville guide expected to be completed by next July. The program will be rolled out over the next three or four years after it is adopted by the council. Residents can make a submission by Sunday, December 13, through Participate Hobsons Bay on the council’s website by December 13. 16.01.2022 It is great to see sport starting to return back to normal. This week, a lot of the local cricket teams began the new season. It has been delayed about a month due to the coronavirus pandemic but hopefully it will be fine from here on in until the end of the season. I see also from the Premier's announcement yesterday that masks will not necessarily have to be used when watching a match. Also, a lot of sports can now be operating outdoors with up to 500 people present and ind...oor sports with 150. All good news. 15.01.2022 Hobsons Bay has been well used by film crews over the past few years. Another lot of filming is to happen next year at Seaworks. 14.01.2022 I welcome the release of the Inner West Air Quality Community Reference Group’s report on air quality which has been a detriment to Hobsons Bay. It is now time for the State Government to clean up unwarranted pollution in the west which has emanated from landfill, heavy industry, waste storage sites and other polluting sources. One of the particularly worrying issues was evidence by Melbourne University’s Professor Louis Irving, who noted there was a rising incidence of lun...g disease among 20-30 year olds. These are in people who never smoked, with most of them living in the inner west of Melbourne. It makes you worry, doesn’t it? Fixing the issue up starts with more air monitoring stations, supporting the use of alternative fuels for trucks and cars, enforcing dust control measures at industrial and construction sites and relocation of the polluters. The community reference group has made about two dozen recommendations, which I hope are acted upon by the State Government in the coming years. Thanks to the community members who put in a lot of hard work into formulating their report. 14.01.2022 About 2.30am tomorrow marks 20 years since Angela Altair and myself were elected to Hobsons Bay. That's when the VEC pushed the button after counting of the votes and both our names rolled out. We have seen five elections since. I am still pleased to be able to serve our community. It is a great community.

13.01.2022 Big Green Push South Kingsville, Spotswood, Brooklyn and Altona North should see thousands of trees being planted in the landscape in the immediate few years. In the 2010-21 Budget, $360,000 has been allocated for street tree planting, in line with the Urban Forest Strategy, which gets voted on tomorrow night.... It is part of a plan to boosting the greening of the city over the next 20 years. That includes trees on private land as well as those in our streets and reserves. I hope the private sector follow our lead in planting more trees... 12.01.2022 The origins of a phrase that we all are familiar with

12.01.2022 I am looking forward to when works begin on the community park in front of the mosque in Blenheim Road, Newport. This land has remained virtually derelict for a number of years. Hobsons Bay City Council allocated $250,000 in the current Budget to begin the works and has earmarked another $1.8 million in the 2021-22 Budget, subject to approval by the new council.... The designs have yet to be approved by Council but should see the park blend in with the mosque at the rear of the site and provide play spaces for visitors to the cricket or rugby pitches at the adjacent Bayside College. Council recently formalised car parking on Blenheim Road and renewed the southern section of the street south of Woods Street. This should help parking for visitors to the reserve and the adjacent sports grounds. 11.01.2022 Peter nominates for election I have now officially nominated for a record seventh term on the Hobsons Bay City Council. It wasn’t such a hard decision in the end, as I still have a passion to work for our community to see it grow and prosper.... And there are a lot of unfinished projects I wish to see through after delivering on some big projects during this past term, such as the Williamstown Juniors Football Club pavilion. Now more than ever, with the coronavirus unleashed upon us, it will be particularly important to elect someone with years of experience to the Council. I have worked hard for our community for nearly 22 years, a period which has seen me be elected Mayor in 2008 and 2015. I will be seeking the support of Strand Ward voters when the ballot papers arrive in the next couple of weeks. 10.01.2022 A number of people have asked what council is doing about planting more trees in Hobsons Bay. In September, the Council passed its Urban Forest Strategy. The main aim of the Urban Forest Strategy is to cool our urban footprint.... It has the ambitious target of quadrupling the number of trees on public and private land to lift our canopy cover to 30 per cent over the next 20 years. Putting that into perspective, it means about 200,000 trees need to be planted by 2040 a very tall order. Council plans to spend about $400,000 a year for the first five years to kickstart the program, before scaling back the annual expenditure. To contact Peter, call 0401 158 636, email [email protected] or visit www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au//Trees-Nat/Urban-Forest-Strategy to learn more about the Urban Forest Strategy. #hobsonsbay #strandward #peterhemphill

10.01.2022 The Tide Gauge House now situated in Commonwealth Reserve will soon get a makeover as part of Council’s heritage conservation program this financial year. Council is intending to clean the masonry and repair the mortar on the small heritage bluestone building, which is listed on the Victorian Heritage RegisteInterpretive signage is also planned to be installed as part of the conservation project. The Tide Gauge House was originally sited at Breakwater Pier off Point Gellibran...d from about 1857 and was used to measure the tides. 08.01.2022 Altona Sports Centre extension update... The new basketball/netball stadium extension in Altona Meadows is taking shape. Long sections of the exterior concrete walls have been erected and the first of the roof trusses secured.... The car parks to the south and west of the Altona Sports Centre have already been completed. The extension will see the number of courts increase from its current level of six to 10. With about 80 byes a week due to the court limitation in the past, the extension will only bring the centre up to current needs. The Hobsons Bay City Council will need to begin work on building more courts for the future, particularly at the eastern end of the municipality. Basketball, in particular, is the fastest growing sport in Hobsons Bay. 08.01.2022 The BAE car park at the bottom end of Nelson Place has become overgrown with weeds an indication it has not been used for quite some time. It would become particularly useful when big cultural or sporting e...vents are held in the tourist precinct, such as the Macedonian Cultural Festival and the Lexus January cycling event run there in the past. 06.01.2022 Voting in the 2020 Hobsons Bay council election officially closed at 6pm on Friday, October 23. I want to thank all those people who supported me during the campaign. Existing councilors ceased to be elected representatives at 6am the following morning.... We now enter a two- or three-week hiatus until counting concludes and the poll winners are declared by the Victorian Electoral Commission. Data entry for votes received by the end of last week will take place at the Melbourne Showgrounds on Wednesday. For Strand Ward, this will begin at 8.30am and go until all 19,000 plus votes received so far have been processed. Hopefully, candidates will receive the primary vote count (the No. 1 votes) at the end of the day to give an indication of how the election is progressing. Due to the slowness of Australia Post deliveries, the VEC is allowing until 12 noon this Friday for receival of votes cast and dated prior to October 24. Those votes will be counted the following week. Then at some unknown point after that, the VEC will push a button and its computers will compute the voters’ preferences and spit the result out at the end. The election manager will formally declare the poll result after counting concludes. Thank you all again! 06.01.2022 The Labor Government plans to remove the Ferguson Street rail crossing at North Williamstown station because it is deemed to be dangerous and causes congestion. But when it is removed, the area will probably remain dangerous and most certainly congested. That’s because the Level Crossing Removal Project body refuses to adopt a safe and sensible means for people to cross from the station to South Williamstown without having to go through pedestrian-operated traffic lights.... Hobsons Bay City Council proffered a design for the station and its surrounds based on feedback from the Williamstown community. The concept design gives good community amenity but, importantly, offers a solution for pedestrian flow from the subterranean station platforms through to South Williamstown under the road surface at Ferguson Street. But the LXRP recently rejected the design. Blind Freddy can see the Council’s concept plan has merit, but the LXRP cannot. You can view the Council’s concept plan here if you have not already seen it. What do you think? 05.01.2022 A big "thank you" to the Newport residents who have given the Council guidance on what to put in Armstrong Reserve. The revamp is largely complete and it is looking a real treat. A number of people have also asked for my How To Vote card. The easiest way to find it is to go on to www.peterhemphill.com.au and a tab should show up on the main page.
