25.01.2022 Illegal wildlife poaching is theft, and our Cunningham’s Skinks in Victoria are sadly being targeted by these criminals. Animals stolen from the wild are often subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment and wild populations are depleted. Everyone can play a role in helping to stamp out this illegal trade. ... Remember to: Only buy pet reptiles from licensed dealers and do due diligence on online traders. Make sure the reptiles you purchase are captive-bred. Ensure you acquire the necessary licences you need to keep reptiles. Report suspicious or illegal activity you observe to DELWP on 136 186 or to Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000. #ARIscience #ArthurRylahInstitute

22.01.2022 Ignition of the planned burn at Upwey between Hughes Street and Tremont Hill Track is now underway. Tremont Hill Walking Track in the Dandenong Ranges National Park will be closed for the weekend. This 3.4-hectare burn is a critical part of our program to reduce the bushfire risk in the area. Weather permitting, the burn will be complete by Sunday 22 November. Crews will remain on site throughout the night and in coming days to patrol the burn. Planned burning is one of the... many strategies used by FFMVic as part of an integrated approach to protecting life and property from the risk of bushfire. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure operations are carried out safely. We understand that smoke from planned burns can cause concern and encourage those who are sensitive to smoke to remain indoors and keep windows closed until the smoke passes. This is a small burn that is not expected to generate large amounts of smoke, but the poor ventilation forecast means smoke is likely to settle rather than be immediately dispersed. We are taking every opportunity to burn while conditions allow, and it is safe to do so. For more information on this burn please contact 1800 226 226 or visit www.vic.gov.au/plannedburns. 20.01.2022 Imagine the world being all green, Imagine planting flowers to be seen. Imagine streets with grass and trees, Imagine hives for all the bees. Imagine tanks to catch the rain that falls,... Imagine gardens on buildings up tall. Imagine bridges for possums and birds, Imagine apartments with bright green ferns. Imagine roses when bikes ride by, Imagine urban forests cleaning the sky. Imagine the sun powering the land, Imagine a green universe in your own hand. This was one of the heart-warming submissions we received for the Hot Houses Cool Art project. A very talented group of 3-4-year-olds from The University of Melbourne’s Early Learning Centre put pens and paintbrushes to paper to show how they see our streets, suburbs and cities adapting to climate change. This contribution will help inform the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Greater Melbourne by capturing the community’s vision for the future. You don’t need an artistic flair to provide your ideas. You can contribute to the development of Greater Melbourne’s Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy by sharing your views on the Melbourne’s Climate Journey Discussion Paper. 15.01.2022 Earlier this year, 14 hardworking Victorians joined the DELWP Port Phillip team as part of the Working for Victoria program. These legends have made light work of many important projects, including revegetation, weeding, preserving culturally and environmentally significant sites, general maintenance, track work, and have supported several community-led projects that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. In late August, the outdoor work was paused in response to the coronavi...rus (COVID-19) pandemic but the team quickly traded their work boots for ugg boots and pivoted to tasks that could be done from home. Then, in late October, the team got back to work at various locations around Port Phillip Bay and Westernport Bay, and they’ve been doing a terrific job. Working for Victoria creates employment opportunities for people who have lost their jobs due to the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19), while delivering a valuable community service. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue our operations across the state.

14.01.2022 If conditions are suitable and it’s safe to do so, Forest Fire Management Victoria will ignite a planned burn in Upwey between Hughes Street and Tremont Hill Track on Saturday 21 November. The burn will be around 3.4 hectares and is focused on reducing the spread and intensity of bushfires in the surrounding area. If the burn goes ahead, there will be traffic management on Hughes St between Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd and Olivette Ave during the burn to enable fire crews to... work safely. Residents who live along Hughes Street will be able to access their properties. Tremont Hill Walking Track in the Dandenong Ranges National Park Will be closed for the weekend. We work closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to assess weather conditions, such as humidity, temperature and wind speed, and will only carry out burns when the conditions are suitable. We understand that smoke from planned burns may cause concern and encourage those who are sensitive to smoke to remain indoors and keep windows closed until the smoke passes. As this is a small burn it should not generate large amounts of smoke, but there could be poor ventilation, which may cause smoke to settle overnight rather than immediately disperse. Under the current public health advice, our planned burning program can continue for now. If that advice changes, we will make any adjustments necessary in consultation with Victorian Department of Health & Human Services, Environment Protection Authority Victoria, CFA (Country Fire Authority) and Vic Emergency. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue operations across the state.
