24.01.2022 Our patient Jose having a check up with Prof Andrew Cochrane at Monash Health. Jose had his life-saving surgery at Royal Melbourne Hospital and was very thankful to all the medical team involved and our donors who made it possible. 18.01.2022 Rheumatic heart disease is devastating, and causes significant morbidity and mortality in Timor-Leste. New journal article in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health: "Morbidity and mortality of rheumatic heart disease and acute rheumatic fever in the inpatient setting in TimorLeste" - Davis... It is available at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jpc.15476 The conclusion was "Community echocardiography screening has reported a high prevalence of undetected mild to moderate cases of RHD in TimorLeste, whereas this hospital study documents mostly severe disease among hospitalised patients with a high case fatality rate and loss to follow up. RHD is a significant health problem in TimorLeste and improved recognition and diagnosis, as well as effective delivery of treatment and followup are imperative." This directly links to, and underpins a number of our new projects, as well as our drive to increase our provision of paediatric heart surgery. Dr Ari Horton, our volunteer paediatric cardiologist is a co-author, as are a number of our wonderful colleagues in Timor-Leste and Menzies Health Research. It is always great to work with our colleagues at Menzies, Maluk Timor, HNGV, RACS and the Ministry of Health to end rheumatic heart disease in Timor-Leste.

15.01.2022 We stand with the people of Timor-Leste as the impact of the weekend's devastating floods continues to unfold. Our deepest condolences go to the friends and families of the 27 people who have already lost their lives as a result of this horrific natural disaster. Utilities and communications are unstable, however we have made contact with our partners and colleagues on the ground, who are safe and busy assessing the damage and determining the best way forward in light of the existing COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown restrictions. Due to the disaster, programs are on hold. Meanwhile, we are liaising and working with our partners so that we can update you as to how we will best support heart health services in the community as soon as we are able.
