25.01.2022 Good morning Canberra
25.01.2022 It's been a long 11 weeks since Jungle cast himself badly in his stable, and finally she got back up there! Kristy has diligently worked on Jungle's rehab, literally hand walking him back to a pain and restriction free body. She has learned a lot along the way, how to use Equi-Tape to help with his swelling and pain, how to activate certain areas in his body to reduce restrictions, his CEN nutritional needs as his rehab changed, and of course the importance of pole work. Well done Kristy, you made it! Now to sustain his flexibility while building the strength in his hind, back and core - getting him ready to return to his jumping.
24.01.2022 12 mixed breed horses underwent surgery. Six had a therapeutic kinesiology tape application applied to the surgery site 12hrs post arthroscopy, after swelling had appeared, and six were the control with no application. The applications were left on for 72hrs, in just 12hrs there was a significant decrease in swelling, which continued for the duration of the application. "Swelling or effusion after arthroscopy, even though it occurs at a low rate (0%15%), may be responsible f...or postoperative pain and may delay rehabilitation, mainly from degenerative diseases [1]. In this study using therapeutic bandage, we can confirm that the lymphatic activation was effective when applied after 12 hours of surgery due to higher decrease of swelling in TG, demonstrating a positive effect in reducing swelling 24 hours after the procedure that persisted for up to 72 hours" See more

18.01.2022 What else can I do to help your horse - Spinal Mobilization I studied the course through Equinology, with Dr Nicole Rombach and Debranne Pattillo, and use these skills on every horse I see. This post from The Equine Documentalist begins to explain how hoof imbalance effects the spine and the importance of a holistic approach to rehab. Why is rehabilitation important after correcting long term hoof imbalance? Hoof imbalance is directly linked to lameness (Dyson 2011) and has knock on effects on the entire musculoskeletal system (Kilmartin 2014, Mannsman et al. 2010, Pezznite et al. 2018, Clements et al. 2019, Gellman et al. 2019).
18.01.2022 Acute lameness with swelling proximal to the fetlock. Application placed for support and pain relief overnight, and for traveling to the vet clinic the next day for diagnostics. #equinemassageKA #equinehealth #EquiTapeAus #equitape #equinerehab #equinekinesiologytaping #equinebodywork #naturalhorse #horsehealthcare #equinehealthcare

17.01.2022 What is my go to bodywork modality - Myofascial Release! MFR is a very gentle and quiet hands-on technique using sustained pressure to stimulate the Fascia. During a session the aim is to rehydrate, release and reinstate the flexibility of the fascia - relieving pain and restoring range of motion. I studied MFR through Equinology ANZ with Ruth MitchellGolladay, and the moment I made my first connection with the Fascia I never looked back, I knew this was the modality for... me! Anyone who has had a session with me has witnessed the change in the Fascia of their horse - sometimes it shows us the problems before I even lay my hands on! Fascia talks and can tell you just where the horse is restricted and sore. Sometimes the whole body is effected and sometimes it is just in regions where the Fascia has either thickened or become strained due to an injury, surgery or over use. One thing is for sure - it feels great to be on the receiving end of a quiet and deeply intensive MFR session with me. . . https://www.facebook.com/equinemassageKA #equinemassageKA #MFR #equinemfr #equinerehab #equinebodywork #equinefascia #fasciarestricion #myofasciarelease #equinemyofasciarelease #equinetherapies #equinehealthcare #equinetherapy #equinerehabtherapy #equinemassagetherapy See more
16.01.2022 So what has my sponsor horse Jungle been up to? Rolling under the stable yard fence and getting his leg stuck between a wooden board and hot tape!! Poor boy tried his hardest for 10mins to kick his leg out, when Kristy finally got him free he had badly bruised the whole leg, scraping off skin and barely escaping muscle and tendon damage to the the hamstring muscle group. Jungle has seen his vet twice in 8hrs to make sure he was ok. After applying Equi-Tape to disperse the sw...elling and pain relief, Jungle went from non weight bearing lame to feeling comfortable and pain free enough to stand on all four legs with his hamstrings relaxed, greatly reducing supporting limb pain and fatigue. I'll be visiting and monitoring Jungle daily for the next two weeks, and adjusting his applications as needed. See more

15.01.2022 Yesterday I had the opportunity to work with Bonnie, an 24yr old STB mare. She unfortunately had an accident with a car in the middle of the night. She survived with multiple injuries, her paddock friend didn't. I saw her yesterday 10 days post accident, her beautiful owners have been looking after her around the clock at home and made her the most comfortable they could. Her wound on her chest is so deep and open that air passes through, this had created subcutaneous emphyse...ma from her jaw all the way down her neck, chest, back, stifle and even into her hock, the crepitus feel to her body was just about everywhere you laid your hands. This was a big job and the lymphatics needed help, so I called in the big guns! I messaged Rebecca Haddock, vice president of Equi-Tape in Colorado, and she video called back 10 minutes later - talk about being supported!! Rebecca assessed and then gave me a plan for a very advanced lymphatic application with detailed instructions with monitoring vitals whilst applying, and continued to give her advice and help for the duration of the session. I worked on this beautiful shut down mare for 90mins, applying and monitoring, and then all of a sudden she 'woke up'! It was miraculous, her eyes opened, she took a few deep breaths, she shifted a little and then started interacting with us, touching us with her head, looking for food and water. It was a beautiful thing. The fluids started shifting through her body and by the time I left 4hrs later she was walking around, eating handfuls of grass and her body was warm. It made my heart sing! I went back 3hrs later and checked her again, the crepitus feel was gone from her neck, stifle and hock on one side, her head had reduced in size and so had her chest and withers. She had a constant drip out her wound as the fluid was now draining out. Her vet was also called after the session and updated, she was thrilled with the result! I will be keeping in constant contact with her owner and back up to see her for another session in a week, where I will triage her again and address her most pressing issues. See more

13.01.2022 When did we lose our way??!! It seems as an industry we have largely lost our way as we continue to come across very high percentages of broken alignment & we a...re seeing NPA almost daily. Just yesterday I HoofScanned 2 high grade eventers, shod by a qualified farrier with a good reputation. Both horses were significantly NPA in both hind feet caused by total caudal failure & the signs were so obvious it makes me wonder how a farrier of this experience & reputation misses this. The owner is competitive & has spent thousands on one horse incl injections in hocks more than once, which often seems standard practice even if nothing pathological is found. This week alone I’ve been sent 2 lots of rads from the UK, which were taken as the horses were going poorly. The vets found nothing of concern, yet the rads showed NPA in both sets, one in front & the other behind. Based on conversation with the owners the findings of NPA are consistent with the horses behaviours. Unfortunately both are now having difficulty convincing their farriers thst this is a concern & needs corrected. Myself over the last couple of weeks have had similar issues. One was a set of xrays being sent to me by a vet who had breakover marked where he wanted it to the millimetre, yet didn’t mention the very broken back alignment. Whilst another vet attended one of my clients & felt the horse had too much heel (photo below) & took it upon himself to take a rasp to the foot & remove the heel The amount of times clients tell me their farrier told them that lowering the heel & moving breakover back from the toe improves alignment is amazing. I’ve also been told this numerous times. We seem to have lost the understanding of the importance of comfort to the horse when shoeing as we seem to be constantly removing heels & breaking alignment, even in horses with already broken alignment How can we as an industry have moved so far away from the basic principles of farriery? And more importantly, how can we get back on track!
12.01.2022 Jungle update, in just 24hrs Jungle has made great progress, his wounds are healing rapidly, his body is being soothed and repaired, and his temperament is nearly back to the playful joking man we all love. The swelling in Kristy's hand has reduced by half and she has a lot less pain and more range of motion. Jungle's bruising, scrapes and swelling have made a dramatic improvement in 24hrs. All who have checked on him today have remarked on the major improvement in walki...ng and turning in his stable. He is back to greeting people at the stable door - cheeky monkey that he is! Tonight he received his first dose of photobiomodulation therapy (low level laser LLL) with pulsed 40hz gamma waves to penetrate deep within his Sacroiliac joint, dispersing the deep inflammation in his pelvis. And LLL to his lumbar and rib cage. He is also receiving twice daily blue light therapy. Blue wavelengths penetrate into the skin to stimulate cell growth and repair, and promote the creation of purifying oxygen molecules within the skin. These molecules have the ability to quickly and effectively destroy bacteria. Blue light therapy is complementing Jungle's week long course of AB's. See more

09.01.2022 Vet Nurses, Stud Nurses, Zoo Keepers, Horse Grooms, Stable Hands and Animal Attendants - here is an awesome modality to add to your tool kit! On my run down to Albury/Vic over the weekend, I saw Jodie who is a vet nurse in Wodonga. Her gorgeous mare had an accident with a fence resulting in open wounds, cellulitis, antibiotics and pain relief. Her mare was cleared for rehab therapy so I dropped in and showed Jodie how to help shift the large amounts of edem...a sitting in her legs from sluggish lymphatics using Equi-Tape. I worked on her hind leg, showing Jodie how to prep the area and apply the tape, while Jodie worked on the front leg - great job done for a team effort! Equi-Tape applications are a handy tool to have to support your animals through rehab, including hematomas, edema, lymph and fascia problems, joint effusion, muscle tears, aches and stiffness, scar tissues and tendon/ligament issues. https://www.equi-tape.com.au/pa/benefits-of-equi-tape%C2%AE See more

08.01.2022 Results of a rehab programme over past 4 months for a 14 year old horse with kissing spine. Top photo - Today Bottom photo - April 2020... He has since returned to regular show jumping lessons, competitions and is ready for the up-coming season. This has been achieved by - using a carrot stretching routine to strengthen the multifidus muscle group - the most important!! - long and low ridden stretching - lateral work - pole exercises - small grids - walk pirouettes - transitions - lessons Stretching Programme below The positions you need to do 5 times a week for a horse with kissing spine and 1-3 times weekly for prevention are - 1) Chin-to-chest in which the chin was moved as close as possible to the chest bone 2) Chin-between-knees in which the chin was moved as far back as possible with the bottom of the nose at the level of the knee 3) Chin-between-fore fetlocks in which the chin was taken as far down and back as possible between the fore fetlocks 4) Thoracic/Sternal lifts - pressing your fingers into the sternum of your horse and asking it to lift and hold its back in flexion 5-7 preformed on both the left and right sides of the horse 5) Chin-to-girth in which the horse stretched laterally (to the side) until the chin reaches the level of the girth 6) Chin-to-hip in which the horse stretched laterally with the chin moving toward the point of the hip 7) Chin-to-hock in which the horse stretched laterally toward the hock reaching as far back and down as possible The horse should encouraged to hold each position for 5 seconds and then be rewarded with the piece of carrot. For a rehab programme each of these exercises should be repeated 5 times, 5 days a week for 3 months. This programme is the human equivalent of around 45 abdominal crunches per day. For those horses who are not needing a rehab program, the above stretch/strengthening routine should be done once a week as a way to keep the core muscles and muscles supporting the spine strong

05.01.2022 Fascia trauma. This young girl had a paddock accident resulting in a suspected fractured pelvis in the vicinity of the right tuber coxae. The fascia over the caudal section of the tensor fascia lata had been working so hard to stabilize the hind limb that it had become torn and full of adhesion's. The muscle was constantly turned 'on' and would sweat down the line of trauma, even the hair has changed colour. I placed a single strip of Equi-Tape to relax the muscle and turn i...t 'off'. Then after an MFR session place an Equi-Tape fascia application to continue working the fascia after I left. You can see the fascia activation all the way along the lateral line - from hock to the neck. Nov 2019 Jan 2020 APPREHENSION Maree Sura Now that the firestorms have abated and rain has washed the land. The shooting grass has turned the landscape green. The tree line is still blackened but green shoots are sprouting from the trees and it won’t be long before they’re bushy too. So I’m packing up my bedroll for in twelve days I’m trekking to the Kosciuszko mountain range. With apprehension swelling and my feelings going up and down. What will I find when I get there happiness or tears? I met a Brumby in Kosciuszko and lost my heart to him. Black as midnight a small white star just below his ears. There he stood a magnificent sight tilting his head showing his curiosity. He’d look away and then look back clipping the grass he’d look at me one eyed oh you’re still there he seemed to say as he flicked his head. Riding the track into the rising sun I held my breath You’ve come! You’ve come! I knew you’d come! I’ve waited so long I just couldn’t leave with my friends because in my heart I knew you’d be looking for me. Yes: I know you think it’s the wind but it’s me blowing kisses and messing up your hair. Come dry your eyes as we take a walk together and I shall be right by your side and when you feel my breath upon your cheek. That’s when I’ll cross the bridge to be with my kin forever. 03.01.2022 Something that I am passionate during a session with a client, showing and explaining the balance and function of your horse's muscles and fascia. Bryony Burt Equine Osteopath in the UK has written a nice little read on the generalized balance of the muscles. "Picking up on localised areas of weakness and hypertrophy (over-development) early and addressing the balance may reduce your horses risk of chronic strain and/ or pain and lameness issues. Equally, the muscle imbalances can also give really useful early indication of pain problems brewing that your horse may be compensating for." https://www.facebook.com/bryonyburtequineost/posts/128272552251867
02.01.2022 When your head is too sore for hands on therapy - Equi-Tape to the rescue! Mollie's head pain has been relieved using a decompression application. I have seen Mollie only once before and when I turned up again she made her way through the herd to be first at the gate with ears forward, she was making sure she was first in line!
