Gusti Putu Danny Karya Nugraha, was shot dead in Dambet Village, Beoga Sub-district on April 25. 10.01.2022 This evening i had the pleasure of reading Jacob Rumbiak's comprehensive legal document - 'WEST PAPUA 1942-2019: the politics, the legals, and the only way forward' and i wanted to share it here because it is definitely worth a read and would be a helpful tool for any activist or advocate of West Papua especially those of us who manage West Papua support groups and pages. Jacob is from Numfor Island (West Papua) and was flown to Australia from East Timor in 1999 after he’d escaped from prison in Jakarta to observe the referendum. (In 1989 he and dozens of West Papuan academics were jailed for treason). He is also the current spokesperson of the ULMWP. The root cause of the problem is Indonesia’s colonisation of the West Papuan homeland, and it is within the UNor its principal judicial organ the International Court of Justicethat there are mechanisms to adjudicate the facts and develop a solution in the form of recognition or referendum (as in the recent cases of Bougainville and New Caledonia). For West Papua to be registered on the UN Decolonisation requires 127 of the193 UN member-states to vote for a motion raised by the Republic of Vanuatu (West Papua’s sponsor). The Pacific Islands Forum (an 18-member intergovernmental forum that includes Australia and New Zealand) and the African Caribbean Pacific Group (79 member-states) both passed motions in 2019 that call on all parties to address the ‘root cause’ of the conflict and on Indonesia to allow the UN Human Rights Commission’s fact-finding mission to West Papua early in 2020. Australia and New Zealand are allies of Indonesia hence support Indonesia’s special autonomy regime in West Papua, which we have seen West Papuans outrightly reject in many ways and forms through videos and posts posted on social media. So how can you support West Papua today and into the future? Please build your efforts around these pointers above.
