25.01.2022 We’re looking back at some of the remarkable acts of kindness from 2020 this holiday season and earlier in the year during the Melbourne lockdown, some libraries were calling every single one of their older members to check in on how they were doing.

24.01.2022 Delighted to share our Summer Edition with you. There are some really good bits in it ;)

23.01.2022 Love seeing these bags out and about thank you Barwon Heads Community Bank Branch for your ongoing support of our library

23.01.2022 Gideon Haigh at Geelong Library Thursday 25th February 6.30pm Has COVID-19 ushered in the end of the office? Or is it the office’s final triumph? For decades, futurologists have prophesied a boundary-less working world, freed from the cramped confines of the office. During the COVID-19 crisis, employees around the globe got a taste of it. Confined by lockdown to their homes, they met, mingled, collaborated, and created electronically.... In The Momentous, Uneventful Day, Gideon Haigh reflects on our ambivalent relationship to office work and office life, how we ended up with the offices we have, how they have reflected our best and worst instincts, and how these might be affected by a world in a time of contagion.

23.01.2022 "Are you reluctant to curl up with a good book? Were you once an avid reader, but you’ve lost the habit? Is there always something more important to do, or more TV series to binge watch, or more social media to scroll?" Read on for some great practical ideas to get back into the habit of reading in this The Age article. http://ow.ly/IuNd50D87i3

22.01.2022 We’re offering two scholarships to eligible students starting University and TAFE in 2021! Ruby Mangelsdorf was the recipient of our Scholarship for 2020 and we... caught up with her to hear all about how her first year of Uni has been; It’s hard to believe that my first year of study at Monash University is already over. I’ve just finished my semester two exams and am looking forward to a relaxing summer back home in Barwon Heads! Whilst most of 2020 was remote learning, I was still able to get a taste of uni life, meet lots of new people and expand my leadership and networking skills. Having the Bendigo Bank scholarship allowed me to live in one of the halls of residence at Monash University for a few months. It was an amazing opportunity to make new friends and see what it’s like to live out of home. I’ve been lucky enough to stay in contact with many of these friends over COVID lockdowns. I’m planning on moving back up to the halls of residence in February 2021. I’m so grateful for this scholarship and would like to encourage other young people from Barwon Heads to apply! We are so proud to be able to help Ruby achieve her goals and can’t wait to help another two Barwon Heads students next year. 19.01.2022 The State Library of Western Australia has delivered more than 30,000 library membership cards to all public housing tenancies in WA. Tenants will now have free... access to a huge range of online resources including: e-books e-audiobooks movies and documentaries language courses More than 3,000 magazines and newspapers State Librarian and CEO of the State Library of WA, Margaret Allen, said a lot of the ebooks and movies are suitable for children and young adults and many are in languages other than English. "We know that many of the people receiving this card will never be able to get into Perth to visit the State Library in person but no matter where you live as long as you have access to the Internet you will be able to use this card," she said. Ms Allen said the cards came with instructions on how to use them and if tenants do not have access to the Internet, they will be encouraged to join one of the 233 local public libraries throughout the State. "Many mums and dads might not know about the quality free children’s programming that they can access. Many might not know that they can download free e-audiobooks and thousands of free newspapers and magazines. "For some who do not have access to the Internet this might just be the nudge they need to visit their local public library and find out what free services are available to them. "We hope that this initiative will improve literacy and learning outcomes for thousands of West Australians," she said.

17.01.2022 Did you know that: Reading reduces stress by 68%? It works faster than listening to music, going for a walk or enjoying a cup of tea. Reading will advance your child's learning? A bedtime story six days a week can put kids almost a year ahead when they start school.... Reading is good for your brain? It helps keep it active as you get older. Reading leads to self awareness? It is closely linked to increasing our understanding of our own identity. Reading fiction increases empathy? It helps us better understand and connect with people in the real world. Reading enables us to form our own opinions? It opens our minds to think and feel in different ways, rather than following the crowd.
