24.01.2022 On Consultative Leadership: Notes on the Art of Service Based Leadership By Jon Riethmuller Why write about service delivery when there are already so many books, publications and media on this topic? To me there is no single answer other than we have to continuously refine ourselves to deliver services in a constantly changing business world.... I define service delivery as: providing software and services to a client organisation to assist them in achieving their business goals. Embedded within this paradigm I believe is the imperative of operating ethically, with a set of values-based beliefs than can be defined, articulated and measured against. This approach is one of collegiality, where a service provider works alongside their client to achieve business outcomes required by the client organisation. This can be described as winwin, although that is an over-simplification of multiple relationships, between the client organisation and the service provider, and the people involved in receiving and delivering services within the organisations: its about a partnership. Through my experience I believe professionals working within a service delivery organisation do so to fulfil their ambitions and goals of: being highly skilled and competent, and receiving recognition for their abilities gaining a sense of achievement through completing a finite project receiving acknowledgement through monetary reward knowing that they have made a significant and meaningful contribution to their client organisation and their employer organisation. Significantly, these people are motivated by competency. I will further explore competency in this series of articles, as this term has many nuances. This exploration of service-based leadership has been written in response to a discussion with a group of professionals, at the wedding of one of our colleagues. Members of our group have remained friends over twenty years, through changes in partners, working situations and life experiences. It is a small group, but we welcome new friendships. We range in age from the late twenties to the early sixties, and so we cover the spectrum of Baby Boomers and Generations X, Y and Millennials. What links us all are a set of core values, a passion for competency and professionalism, and the desire to work in and with organisations who share a similar set of values.
