23.01.2022 Fish Pose is a back-bending posture that opens the chest, throat, and abdomen. The Sanskrit name for this pose is "Matsyasana" which comes from two words: "Matsya" meaning "fish"... "Asana" meaning "pose" There are many benefits to practicing Fish Pose: ~ stretches the front of the body ~ releases hip flexors, and intercostals (the muscles between your ribs) ~ strengthens the upper back muscles and the back of the neck, which improves spinal flexibility and posture ~ opens up the lungs, which improves breathing and helps to relieve respiratory ailments. By positively stimulating the muscles of the abdomen, it also helps to relieve constipation and menstrual pain. 18.01.2022 Yoga is for every body, every mind, every soul I was filled with gratitude to guide a group of 20 beautiful souls through a Hatha yoga practice this week. The majority of the ladies were over 65 and I felt pure joy witnessing just how incredible they were, embracing their practice, embodying and honouring their bodies and breath. Too often I hear people say things like ~... ‘I’m not flexible enough to do yoga’ ‘I’m not strong enough, fit enough or thin enough’ Yoga isn’t about needing to BE flexible, strong, bendy, spiritual, perfecting the pose, fit or thin. Yoga is about being YOU. Showing up exactly as you are, in the present moment. Here and now. Yoga is about gifting yourself time to explore inwards. Noticing your breath, cultivating an inner awareness to feel into your body, finding stillness in the mind and bringing balance and peace within the body. 14.01.2022 The quieter you become, the more you can hear Some of you may wonder what this really means. Breaking it down, when our mind focuses our attention on a particular thought, we sustain those thoughts and create more similar thoughts. So your attention is like energy, fueling and feeding the thoughts to produce more of the same. However, when we quiet the noise in the mind, we remove the attention from the thoughts. When we remove the attention, the mind noise begins to slo...w down creating an opportunity for clarity and presence. So how do we quiet the mind? Meditation or mindfulness creates the opportunity to draw your attention inwards... Sit in silence (for as little as a few minutes or as long as you want), create some length in the spine, close the eyes if comfortable or take your gaze low. Bring your attention to your breath. Notice how the breath feels as you gently inhale and exhale through the nose. Notice where the breath travels in the body, where it goes, creating that mindful connection to become conscious in the present moment. Simply sitting and following the path of the breath allows us to experience this silence in the truest sense, intrinsically listening and connecting to your deeper intelligence or intuition. 08.01.2022 I was first introduced to yoga about 20 years ago. I was serving in the defence force at the time and the training we did was focused on running (lots of running), crunches, pull-ups, push-ups and not a great deal more. At about 4 years into my service, I started studying my Cert III & IV in Fitness and would spend every day training.... riding my mountain bike to work, weight training twice a day to build more strength and endurance, boxing, riding home. I trained and surfe...d on the weekends, ate really strictly and felt pretty fit and strong. Then as a young 24 year old, the injuries I had sustained in my service up to that point started to flare up, restricting my training to reach my full physical potential. My body was fatiguing physically from being pushed too much. I knew there had to be another form of training that was gentler on my joints, but still created strength. A friend of mine asked me to join her for a yoga class one day and I laughed at her saying I wasn’t doing that hippy stuff. She encouraged me to just give it a try, so I did. The day after my first class, I was sore, my muscles had been stretched in places I didn’t know were tight and I somehow felt better. Maybe there was something in this yoga!!! I continued to attend classes 3-4 times a week and slowly became more flexible, stronger and loved challenging myself with some of the more advanced postures. My injuries started to settle down and I was able to push my body again. Because of the strong masculine energy I had, every part of my training was very yang. So the yoga I attended was very asana focused, strong Iyenga / Ashtanga / Bikram styles of yoga. It was heat, tapas, fire in the belly, sweat, headstands, backbends. I fell in love so much with that type of yoga that I began training with a Yoga school in Sydney eventually teaching this style of yoga to others for about 2 years. But fast forward to today from the 27 year old me, I now know that yoga is so much more than just the physical heated asana. It is practicing the Yamas (restraints) and Niyamas (observances) on and off the mat. It is learning the eight limbed path that encompasses all aspects of yoga to live a meaningful and purposeful life. It is self awareness, self study, self love. It is a balance of cool feminine and warm masculine energy. It is breath, meditation, mantra. It is slowing down the mind to create a sense of peace and stillness within. It is embracing the slower asana practices of Hatha, Yin, Restorative yoga whilst balancing with a strong Vinyasa heated flow. 06.01.2022 'When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change' This statement has an incredibly profound meaning which can feel different for everyone. This could be regarding your outlook on your life, your job, your habits, yourself. ... I know for me, I used to see myself as 'not enough'. This never came from external words from others, but the negative internal dialogue, limiting beliefs and perception I had of myself. The struggle with my physical body and comparing myself to others, not loving the skin I'm in, the guilt and feelings of 'being enough'.......Enough of a good mum, wife, daughter, friend! The judgement on myself of being a working mum, or a stay at home mum. After alot of self reflection, of tapping into my purpose, my 'why' and shifting my mindset from self sabotage and negativity to self love and awareness, I've since realised that I am enough and I now accept all of who I am. It still takes work and I still have those 'days', but embracing this acceptance and knowing has given me a quiet confidence that I hadn't felt for a long time and I feel I can share this with others from a place of love, compassion and respect. When you change the way you see the world and more importantly yourself, when your intentions are positive and powerful, when you embrace the good in everything rather than focusing on the negatives, then your life will transform into nothing short of amazing. After all, you create your own reality with the thoughts you think. Anything in life is simply a product of the 'meaning' that we give it. To be able to have that perspective, we begin to understand that we are who we believe we are. The world around us exists as we allow ourselves to see it. 02.01.2022 I had the honour and privilege to join a team of beautiful yoginis on the weekend to share our love of yoga in all manners at Prashanti Retreat in the beautiful Noosa Hinterland. I was blessed to share my love of food by delivering a full vegan / vegetarian menu to 15 beautiful souls. It was an opportunity to showcase this style of eating, aligning with the yogic way of life, but to also show that vegan food can be easy to make and delicious to eat.
