25.01.2022 This morning I searched for the oldest book in our collection which references the land mass now called Australia. The winning book was published in 1698. The a...uthor is William Dampier. The full title has 91 words so will stick with the basic: ‘A New Voyage Round the World’. The landmass is called ‘New Holland’ or ‘Terra Australis Incognita’. The former term is in the full title, hence the inclusion here! Some examples of text and maps from this volume, one of four we have by Dampier. See more
24.01.2022 A great privilege to conduct the election of office bearers at Sunday’s AGM of the Gawler Suicide Prevention Community Group at the Salvation Army Riverside Centre. It was also pleasing to introduce the guest speaker, Nathan Bolton - a member of the Premier’s Council on Suicide Prevention. Congratulations to new Chairperson Lee-Anne Bennett, who succeeded Cr Cody Davies in that role. Also pictured are Robyn Stecker, long-serving secretary & new vice chairperson who was awarded the group’s first Life Member award, and new secretary Karen McColl.

22.01.2022 It's hard to see in these photos, but these beautiful leadlight windows at Angaston Uniting Church are in urgent need of a facelift. On closer inspection, the l...ead which holds the beautiful stained glass in place has deteriorated and buckled. The windows have well and truly earned their keep, having been in place since 1882 - almost 140 years! - after being donated to the church by Mr John Howard Angas. By this stage, they were already well travelled, having come out from England in 1878 by ship to Wallaroo, and then transported by dray to Angaston by Mr Frederic Thorn - Elizabeth Sibley's great-grandfather - on his return trip after carting fresh fruit to Wallaroo. To replace the windows would cost more than $400,000, so the congregation has decided to repair them at a cost of about $40,000, with work by Adelaide Artistic Glass starting today. This is costly for the small congregation, and so the committee - led by Ross Dawkins - is seeking support from the community to help repair and preserve this historical piece, which I have been only too happy to support! If you are also able to help with a small donation, there are two ways to contribute: you can visit the GoFundMe page (link below), or donate directly to the Angaston Uniting Church bank account (BSB 085-799, Account No 508075740). 20.01.2022 Unfortunately due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak in South Australia, we’ve had to cancel the in-person event for Walk Through The Darkness ...and into the ligh...t .... But this Saturday, we still plan to commemorate 'International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day' and invite everyone who feels comfortable to participate in a 'Virtual Remembrance', on the Walk Through the Darkness Facebook event page: https://fb.me/e/1Eewx6NIF. As many of you know, each year at the end of the remembrance ceremony we usually ask people to name the person they have come to remember. As a way to replicate this in a virtual way, AnglicareSA is asking those who feel comfortable to make a post in the ‘discussion’ section of the event page - including the name of the person you are remembering and a short message to, or about them. We understand this day is a very important day for people who have lost someone to suicide, and coming together to remember lives lost to suicide helps raise awareness of the impact of suicide on our community
19.01.2022 Welcome everyone to our brand new Facebook Home! Seeds of Hope Suicide Prevention Network is a local network based in the Barossa and beyond. Please like and share this page and touch back regularly for news events and information. Also let us know if you want to be involved! Standing together, Kind regards, The Seeds Of Hope Team!
17.01.2022 A great privilege for Sheila & I to join in the service & celebrations to mark 175 years since Rev Ridgway Newland opened the first Tabernacle church at Yilki (Encounter Bay). The second church - now the hall - was built in Victor Harbor in 1869 and the third, adjacent church was completed in 1927. Great that Uniting Church President Dr Diedre Palmer, South Australian Moderator Bronte Wilson & former Moderator Rev Sue Ellis could participate. Given that Ridgway Newland was the first District Council Chairman for the area it was also good that City of Victor Harbor Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins was in attendance. Well done to Newland Memorial Congregation Chairman Geoff Penhall, Rev Dr Adrian Brown and all who made the day such a success.

17.01.2022 It was great to catch up with the South Australian Law Reform Institute (SALRI) team late last week to acknowledge the finalisation of the regulations relating to the Surrogacy Act. SALRI delivered a report at the request of the Attorney-General in late 2018 which formed the basis of the Government legislation which passed both Houses last year. These regulations mark the completion of my 15 year quest of legalisation & advancement of altruistic surrogacy in SA. 16.01.2022 Sheila & I were privileged to join graduates of the Welcoming Futures Program for dinner & to view their exhibition at Sparkke on Whitmore in the city this evening. The exhibition is a selection of pictures of them at work and in the studio, accompanied by their stories of arrival, of thriving and of being in SA , and what community and each other mean in our State. It is a delight to continue my involvement with this leadership development program and the inspiring young people who have benefited from participating in it. Thank you to Project Coordinator Alexandra McGee, and to Welcome to Australia, for the invitation.

14.01.2022 The Salisbury Waterwheel Museum houses a historic waterwheel that was originally located behind the Old Spot Hotel on the banks of the Little Para River, which ...is now restored and re-established in a brick building at Pioneer Park in Salisbury. Built for the owner of the Old Spot Hotel, Frederick Heinrich Kuhlmann, in 1899, the wheel once pumped water across 30 acres of orange groves and market gardens. This project was a joint effort with the City of Salisbury, Rotary Club of Salisbury, Salisbury and District Historical Society Incorporated and local businesses. We have recently carried out additional works onsite that involved the installation of gutters in a colonial profile and PVC downpipes to remove and capture stormwater and drain it away from the building. A fresh coat of paint was applied to surrounding timber features and filling in the cracks of the mortar in the stonework. The waterwheel underwent metal work repairs and a new coat of paint and, to assist in preserving the new works on the waterwheel, a flush and pump system was installed to drain the wheel pit of water so the wheel remains dry and free from rust and further water damage. The waterwheel is open to the public on the first and third Sunday of the month and is operated by the Salisbury and District Historical Society
14.01.2022 A message from Emma for International Suicide Survivors Loss Day 2020 - 'For anyone who has recently been bereaved by suicide I really want to tell you that i...t does get easier. When you can, connect with others who have similar experiences, it lightens the load you carry and you won't feel so alone. Make a list of all the things you love and find a way to live them. When I lost my son in 2013 I felt that the world had changed and I didn't fit into it anymore, I had to reinvent and make it a place I could be with my grief. I surrounded myself with things I love even if I couldn't feel them. For me it was family and friends, my vegie patch, animals and nature. I made new traditions ones that included the love I have for my son, like all of my people enjoying apple pie on his birthday and step by step, year by year it began to get easier'. #StandBy #supportaftersuicide #suicideprevention #standbysupportaftersuicide #griefandloss #InternationalSuicideSurvivorsLossDay See more

13.01.2022 As Patron of both the Adelaide Plains Football League & the Two Wells Football Netball Sporting Club, it was good to get along to the season-opening fixture between the Roosters and Hummocks Watchman Eagles at Port Wakefield Oval today. It is 50 years since I first played on that ground & it was excellent to see it looking better than ever. Great to have community sport, including netball - which didn’t feature on the Adelaide Plains last year - up & running again.
12.01.2022 Sheila & I were delighted to attend the Hotham Memorial (Port Elliot) Uniting Church - where we were married in April last year - this morning. It was the first service of worship in the building since 15 March. Great music - especially the choir.

11.01.2022 A great privilege to speak about wellbeing & suicide prevention at the Industry Lunch which formed part of the inaugural Clare Valley Festival of Lamb, today. 08.01.2022 This morning, as President, I received the resignation of Hon Mark Parnell after 15 years as a Member of the Legislative Council. I was pleased that Mark also signed the President’s Visitor’s Book as a ‘former MLC’. Mark’s position in the LegCo will be filled by a nomination from the Australian Greens (SA) to an Assembly of Members of both Houses when Parliament resumes.

06.01.2022 Yesterday, the Australian Government announced the appointment of Dr Bernadette Boss CSC as the new interim National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicid...e Prevention, to be formally confirmed subject to passage of the legislation. Dr Boss has extensive experience and expertise as both a Magistrate and Coroner, and has served in various command and staff roles in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) where she was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross. Through legislation currently before the Parliament, the National Commissioner has functions and substantial powers to inquire fully into deaths by suicide among ADF members and veterans. Once formally appointed, Dr Boss’s first action will be an independent review - with the powers of a Royal Commission - of the 419 suicides by veterans which occurred between 2001 and 2017. For more information on the National Commissioner, including the terms of reference for the review, visit https://www.nationalcommissionerdvsp.gov.au/. In February, I joined Prime Minister Scott Morrison (ScoMo), alongside veterans Phillip Thompson OAM MP - Fighting For Townsville, Vince Connelly MP, Senator Jim Molan, Gavin Pearce MP and Andrew Hastie MP at the announcement of this new National Commissioner (pictured). If you, or someone you know, need support, contact Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling - free and confidential support for current and former ADF personnel and families (1800 011 046) or ADF Mental Health All-hours Support Line - for current ADF personnel and families (1800 628 036), Lifeline (13 11 14), or Suicide Call Back Service (1300 659 467).
