25.01.2022 The first two rules of tech support, love this show.

24.01.2022 TECH TIP: Maintain vs Upgrade I am often confronted by clients who say: "I think its time for a new computer, mine is way too slow" to which I say, "what has changed on your computer since it was fast?", to which they say: "Well nothing really, software is the same, I guess I have just filled it up with junk" This is so common. The funny thing is, if your computer software has not really changed that much (ie you havent upgraded from windows 7 to 8 or office 2010 to 2013 or w...hatever) then chances are the problem is not your computer hardware, its just the operating system needing to be cleaned up and maintained. I liken the windows operating system to a messy teenagers room. Teenagers rooms are beautiful and clean, when they first move in. But over time stuff gets thrown everywhere, and it takes them longer and longer to find things until its cleaned up. I have a DELL Vostro 1310 which is now more than 6 years old. It still runs windows XP and Office 2010 like a champ. Why? because I keep it in good shape with two simple pieces of software, both from Piriform - www.piriform.com 1. CCleaner 2. Defraggler Piriform is not paying me for this post (I wish) it is just a good product and an even better story. The software used to be called Crap Cleaner, but when it made it big, this was kind of commercially unacceptable language, pretty funny if you ask me. Stay tuned to my page here, for instructions on how to use these fantastic pieces of software to keep your computer up to speed. Or if you like, for the low price of $50 I will remote into your computer install them, and show you how to use them for yourself in a 1 on 1 instructional session. PS. I am in the process of upgrading my Vostro, not because of any other reason but Windows XP is now out of support by microsoft. If you need to upgrade from Windows XP ask me about your options today!

14.01.2022 High Tech Problems with Low Tech Solutions 1 Do you have a jumpy mouse? And i do not mean the kind that squeak, and scare most women. Many of us do not use mice anymore, we are using the touch or "circ" pad on our laptop or notebook. However some of us are old school, and still plug in a mouse. (I do) But since the humble mouse lost its balls (well ball anyway) and went all high tech with the amazing magical red light. There has been 1 problem that has frustrated many of us. ...Why does it jump around the screen or give inconsistent or rough mouse movements. There are 2 very low tech solutions to this problem. 1) It might not be your mouse (in fact its most certainly not) its probably the surface its working on. The magical red light is like a little sonar, it sends a light signal to the surface and records the response that bounces back with a sensor. It positions itself much like a dolphin or submarine does. So if the surface is to shiny or glossy the light that bounces back is going to be refracted all over the place confusing the sensor. The Low Tech Solution = Get a mouse mat, or even cheaper a dull piece of black (prefferably) paper. A plain sheet of white printer paper will work, but black is better. 2) If you already have a mouse mat, and your jumpy mouse is more sporadic, and the jumps are larger chances are the problem is very low tech indeed. If you are using a mouse with your laptop you do not need the touch pad thing turned on, and if it is on, chances are you are brushing up against it with your thumbs or fingers whilst typing which is jumping the mouse all over the page. The Low Tech Solution = Turn off the touch pad. There will normally be a button either on the touchpad or near it, or a Function Key combination (look at the coloured icons) that will turn it on and off. Of course sometimes this jumpy or inconsistent behaviour is a high tech problem. Here are some higher tech answers if the low tech ones dont work. 1) See if the problem occurs when you are not plugged into your charger. Or if you are working more mobile away from any other chargers or electrical devices. Sometimes the charger (if it is not the original one) or if there is a charger with a large transformer (the box bit) nearby it can interfere with the mouse, I have had this before on many different brands of laptop but the worst was with the ACER. 2) The most obvious high tech answer to this problem is the driver. The mouse driver (the software that the computer uses to interpret the signals sent from the device) is possibly old or not correct. This solution requires a lot more to explain, but it would be best you get a technician to show you how to fix driver issues. Or stay tuned and i will explain in a later article. Thanks for your readership, I hope this is useful to you.

11.01.2022 Is the IT Industry a self perpetuating cycle of confusion and fear based selling and buying? I often find that my clients are only really looking for someone they can trust to translate the language used by so called professionals in order to make an informed decision. I am thinking of running some education seminars that assist small to medium business owners to debunk the myths, and make sense out of the nonsense they are being sold on a daily basis by so called technology experts. Who's in?

08.01.2022 Computers and I have a love hate relationship. I love to hate them, but most days I find I hate that I love them.
