19.01.2022 As we head into a heatwave with fire warnings returning, Lis Bastian from The Big Fix will be part of a Courtyard Picnic and Talk Panel at the Blue Mountains Cu...ltural Centre this Saturday 28 November. At 11am she'll be talking about Re-Designing the Future and the work being done by local residents who have been severely impacted by the fires over the last year - most importantly to rehydrate our landscapes. She'll talk about how one property survived the fires for a second time on the Darling Causeway and the exciting proposal for a Rainforest Conservancy at the Mounts ... as well as ways everyone can become involved in other World Heritage Regeneration programs. She'll be followed at 11.30am by Leanne Thompson speaking about the inspiring Capertee Hydrology Project. Lunch hampers will be available for a courtyard picnic and there will be live music and kids activities as well as planting sessions to help launch the Cultural Centre’s own rooftop bushtucker and veggie garden! You can also buy veges to take home from the Blue Mountains Food Coop tent or bring produce from your own backyard to swap with others at the Crop Swap tent. The event is free but bookings for all of the above are essential due to COVID and you can read more and book here: https://bit.ly/39kb4TO

15.01.2022 WIRES volunteer Natalie from Nimbin was caring for 2 Tawny Frogmouth orphans, they were out in a flight aviary learning to fly when she noticed that an adult Ta...wny Frogmouth was talking to the little orphans in the aviary at night. Having observed the adult sitting very close to the aviary first on a star picket just 2 meters away from the aviary, then the following morning sitting on a chair leaning against the aviary where it spent the rest of the day assuming it's "I am really a tree branch" pose. After Natalie went into the aviary to feed the fledglings they soon moved down to a branch that was at the same level as the adult sitting on the chair outside. It seemed that the adult Tawny Frogmouth really had a serious interest in these juveniles! Since the little ones were also trying to get closer to the adult Natalie figured, despite not speaking fluent Tawny herself, it wasn't saying anything mean to them. Natalie named the adult Big T. That night at dusk Natalie decided it was worth seeing if Big T would adopt the little ones, they were now capable of flight. She put the 2 fledglings outside the aviary. Big T flew to a nearby tree and called them up. They both managed to fly up to Big T and soon all 3 were sitting together. As soon as it was dark Big T took off. The two orphans flew around and ended up in different trees. Natalie held her breath, but soon after observed Big T fly to each chick and feed them, then fly off again. A flurry of activity ensued as the orphans practiced flying and landing as they tried to follow Big T around. At one point Natalie saw all 3 perched right on top of the roof of the house! Since that first night the three have been inseparable, Big T is feeding them, teaching them to hunt, how to pose to look like a stick, safe to say they have formally been adopted by Big T.

11.01.2022 Waste-to-energy incineration is also a source of mercury emissions. The increased mercury levels have been recorded in fish living in the reservoirs for hydroel...ectricity. The adverse effects of mercury exposure on human health have been indicated in a number of studies, and there seems to be no ‘zero effect’ exposure level. As a result, the mitigation of mercury emissions is gaining more and more attention. The danger of mercury pollution drew widespread attention after the cause of the Minamata disease (Ekino et al., 2007) was identified as a severe case of mercury poisoning. Mercury compounds are generally more toxic than the compounds of other nonradioactive heavy elements (Pushie et al., 2014). Mercury can easily vaporise in combustion processes and be released into the atmosphere as mercury vapours. Moreover, combustion temperatures are usually high enough to decompose mercury compounds and release Hg0 vapour (metallic Mercury). Elemental mercury has a very low solubility in water, which makes it challenging to remove elemental mercury by commonly used methods for flue-gas cleaning. Human exposure to metallic mercury takes place mostly by swallowing contaminated foods or drinks or breathing in mercury vapours. When ingested, only a very small amount of metallic mercury (less than 0.01% of the dose) is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract (Da Broi et al., 2017). Inhaling of mercury vapours is much more dangerous as mercury enters the bloodstream through the lungs. The density of saturated mercury vapour strongly depends on the temperature. Charvat. 10.01.2022 New gas is a backward step for Australian clean energy! It’s time to hold the decision-makers in the big energy companies to account for the damage they do to ...our communities and climate. We’ve brought together a brand new team of corporate lawyers laser-focused on holding companies and their directors to account. But these are huge companies with enormous resources behind them. Can you help us hold energy giants to account?

01.01.2022 Neoen Australia proposing to develop a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System, Brays Lane Wallerawang. Great Western Scoping report V2. currently with Dept of Planning Industry and Environment. For the full report see link below. https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projec//40891... Introduction Neoen Australia (the proponent) is proposing to develop a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Wallerawang, New South Wales (NSW), within the Lithgow Local Government Area(LGA). The Project is identified as State Significant Development (SSD) under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979(EP&A Act) by virtue of meeting thresholds defined in the State Environmental Planning Policy (State and Regional Development) 2011(SRD SEPP). The Project seeks to provide a critical element of the expanding renewable energy industry and the future capacity and resilience of the NSW energy network through providing a large-scale energy storage system. Neoen believe that the provision of the physical infrastructure to store electricity is a critical first step to supporting the investment in and development of renewable energy solutions for NSW. The large-scale BESS that would be delivered by the Project would operate unlike any other device currently connected to the NSW network, and would provide a range of services with extremely fast response times to support a stable network and security of supply. The energy storage capacity provided by the Project would allow for increased installation of renewable energy sources while maintaining network stability and security. This Scoping Report has been prepared to seek Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) for the Project. These SEARs would allow the preparation of an EIS in line with the expectations of the regulators and in accordance with Part 4 of the EP&A Act
