25.01.2022 New artist alert! Vanessa Miller tinkered in her garden studio in Cowaramup for years before taking the plunge and signing up for Open Studios. Please make her feel welcome! Vanessas work is playful and vibrant, inspired by Mexican and Indian folk art. American tattoo art comes into play too; roses and gypsy women, sailing ships and swallows. Bold lines and deep colours. Pick up a piece to hang on the wall, or a decorated bowl or vintage treasure, then follow it up with a vi...sit to Karl Heussenstamms nearby Purple Crown Tattoo studio - the two artists share a similar aesthetic. Open Studios runs for 16 days; 12-27 September, with 100+ artists opening their private studios. Pick up a printed Event Guide from Jacksons Drawing Supplies or download an updated guide from mrropenstudios.com.au See you there!

24.01.2022 What a wonderful first day of Open Studios! Heres a sneak peek of the fabulous artists we visited - Jo and Pauline Alferink, Sam James and his pet goat, Britta Sorensen, Martine Perret, Salli Coppin, Nigel Lullfitz, Tony Warrilow, Bill Meiklejohn and Louise Farnay. It was a joy to see so many people at each studio, and cafes full of diners browsing the event guide! On behalf of all the artists and organisers, a big thank you to all our visitors for supporting this event. Were thrilled to welcome you back, and to connect art lovers with artists once again.

24.01.2022 Paul Pichugin Photography is living the dream.... kayaking and snorkelling in Antarctica, night kayaking amongst the bio-luminescence in Tasmania and hiking through blizzards in the Tasmanian mountains, aerial photography in Queensland, Dubai and all over Western Australia to camping through Iceland and Norway and with Bedouin in Jordan, riding horses around the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Needless to say, hes itching to get out for his next travel photography assignment, as so...on as borders reopen and its safe to travel again. But in the meantime, were fortunate to have Paul participate in Open Studios for the first time, opening his Busselton studio with his artist mum, Lorraine Pichugin. Paul has a selection of his landscape photographs available for sale from Australia and beyond, printed in various sizes and formats. Stop in and say gday to these wonderful artists who are participating in Open Studios for the first time.

23.01.2022 Sometimes he paints the forests and farms, but it's Steve Vigors' seascapes that have captured our hearts. Painted in many layers, Steve's work becomes quite textured and rich. He often paints en plein air, and is happy returning to the same beautiful spots as the changing weather means no two paintings are ever the same. Visit Steve at his Busselton studio where he is demonstrating his technique until Sunday.

23.01.2022 Have you visited Margaret River Open Studios this year? Please complete our survey (once youve finished your art adventure) for a chance to win a $2000 Cape Lodge experience. https://www.mrropenstudios.com.au/win

22.01.2022 Pretty happy with this one of local artisan, Gerry Reilly. One of Western Australias leading glass artists. I was driving past his house tonight hoping to sco...re a pic to help promote the upcoming Margaret River Region Open Studios event starting this weekend. His was sitting on his front porch having a cuppa and watching the kangaroos punch each other in the garden. Better than TV he reckons . Before I know it Im invited into the studio and hes fired up the kiln. Gerrys like a wind up energiser bunny, full of energy, full of stories and philosophy and knowledge and well considered thoughts. Hes everything you want and hope from an artist. All the while producing his highly sought after glass masterpieces. "Watch this!" he says as he grabs a potato and somehow magically turns it into molten lava? Meeting personalties like Gerry is the reason Open Studios is one of the biggest highlights in the Margaret River events calendar. This year it was off, then on, then off, then a lot of community excitement when it was declared full green lights for 103 artists to open their studio doors to the public This event is critical to the economic survival of many of our artists in the region and your support this year will mean more than ever. Check the event details below.

22.01.2022 Carmen McFaull Art captures the West Australian coast so beautifully, each painting recording a moment in time of our collective seaside holidays. Carmen acknowledges the dynamic WA coast as a rich source of inspiration for her work. its an artists dream whether it is over on Rottnest Island, from bay to bay, or up north to Broome, or down south. I love painting water in its various contexts reflective marks, fluid movements and rhythms or as a peaceful band within a sub...ject." Carmen opens her Dunsborough studio once a year and looks forward to welcoming you very, very soon! -- Important notes for this years event 1. 22.01.2022 "I have always found beauty in the everyday. Since moving to this region from Italy I fell in love with its nature and rugged beauty and it continually inspires my work." Francesco Gerronazzo @margaretriverprintmaking is new to Open Studios, and this is the first time hes opened his fascinating studio to the public. He recently returned to Margaret River after 2 years lecturing in Printmaking at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Bologna, Italy. Francesco will share his passi...on for printmaking in a series of interactive workshops during Open Studios, on Mondays 14th and 21st September. Contact Francesco for booking details. 22.01.2022 More precious moments touring studios today - and there’s only one day left of this wonderful event! Our artists are all elated; it’s been a privilege to open their studios and meet so many art lovers, but many are looking forward to relaxing quietly for a few days too. Many are keen to see Open Studios as a spring time event; how have you enjoyed visiting in September? Pictured here; 1 Lauren Wilhelm Artist 2, 3, 4 Kate Debbo’s beautiful dog and studio - she was a little cam...era shy 5 Kerry Sibly and Fi Wilkie Art in their wonderful converted cow shed studio 6 living legend Leon Pericles with the 2019 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay on which his art graces the bottle. Please enjoy the final day of Open Studios. Remember you can commission a piece of art - many artists take commissions if you missed out on something you loved. And follow their work on social media, where they will often show works in progress and new pieces.

21.01.2022 20 years living in the Kimberley and the pindan, boabs and aqua water certainly gets in your blood and under your nails - and onto your canvas in Ingrid Windrams case. She captures the essence of the place in her vivid landscape paintings, and over the last few years has gently coaxed her son and fellow #MRROS artist Josh Windram back from addiction and into health with art therapy. They painted together for months on end, and share an important and positive message. Visit Ingrid and Josh in their rural Vasse studio, on the outskirts of Busselton. While in the area, visit Susan Jennings-Blythe, Gay Scaddan, Steve Vigors and Lorraine Frost, all fabulous artists within a few minutes of the Windrams. Open Studios begins this Saturday and finishes on Sunday 27 September. We look forward to seeing you soon!

20.01.2022 "I love fishing and I love being creative. Its two loves that Ive merged together to create something that people enjoy." Adam Ashdown is excited about opening his Dunsborough studio for Margaret River Region Open Studios. Its his first time participating in the event, which begins Saturday 12th and runs to Sunday 27th September. https://www.abc.net.au//dunsborough-artist-creati/12649164

20.01.2022 Celebrate with artist Heidi Mullender at her pre-launch opening event . Heidi will be based at Merchant & Maker in Dunsborough throughout Open Studios

19.01.2022 Congratulations Kathy Pawluk on winning, and thanks to everyone who entered our competition by completing the Open Studios end-of-event survey. Your survey responses are a great help in planning and improving our 2021 event! Kathy will enjoy a restful stay at Cape Lodge in Yallingup, complete with superb meals and hopefully a spa bath just like this! Thanks to Drew and the team at Cape Lodge for your generous support with this prize. Stay tuned for an announcement about next years event, the cogs are turning and we’re making plans!

19.01.2022 Laurie Posa paints the surreal - for example, a Major Mitchell cockatoo dressed as the English surveyor for which it was named, with medals pinned to its chest. His garden is superb; filled with sculptures as wonderful as his paintings. And Laurie's had a wonderful Open Studios so far, - "it’s always exciting to meet someone who understands why you would pose a Black Cockatoo as the Mona Lisa to give it social context, and then buy the painting" You'll find Laurie at his Margaret River studio for the next three days, with Open Studios wrapping up this Sunday.

19.01.2022 Heidi Mullender relishes the chance to paint en plein air (outdoors) to capture the colours, light and energy as she sees it, and we imagine an afternoon painting high above Yallingup beach must have been a re-energising pleasure. Back in the studio, Heidi paints wonderful still life pieces, capturing the simple beauty of a bunch of peonies. When viewed from a distance her work is very realistic, and is pleasantly painterly with deliberate texture and strokes when enjoyed up close. Heidi will demonstrate how she uses a range of tools to create, with some works completed with only a palette knife, sometimes brushes, sometimes fingers. Shell be working and exhibiting at Merchant and Maker cafe, where the coffee and croissants are excellent, throughout Open Studios.

17.01.2022 Peter Scott has an enviable gift for capturing the beauty and ever changing nature of our beautiful region. Needless to say, Peter is inspired by his beloved Margaret River home, and hence collectors around the globe hang his pieces as treasured memories of holidays here. Peter has won countless prizes and awards in his 45 year art career, shared his skills as an art lecturer and featured in many solo and group exhibitions. Meet Peter and see his impressionistic style in action at his Margaret River studio during the remaining days of Open Studios.

17.01.2022 Shakers - Kitsch Collection. Leon Pericles 1999. Important note: because the printed Event Guide is our greatest promotional investment, were using the guides that were printed for the original April/May event, with a sticker showing the rescheduled dates. Needless to say theres a few thing that have changed since they were printed! You can download an updated guide from our website, to browse on your ipad or other device. Theres also a "Whos Open When" printable A4 docum...ent which lists all participating artists, their opening days and hours. We recommend printing that list and carrying it with you! We thank you in advance for your patience and hope you have a wonderful time exploring and meeting our talented artists.

17.01.2022 The wonderful Leon Pericles has done it again; this time creating the whimsical Moss Garden Ruins in his studio garden. Hes been painting it with a moss-buttermilk-water smoothie to encourage growth. @LeonPericles studio is a treasure trove of fabulous sketches, prints, paintings and curiosities collected over the years. It will be open Friday to Monday (closed Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 12th to 27th September. Be sure to visit.

15.01.2022 If youre scratching your head wondering why this looks slightly familiar, you may recognise Emily Jacksons colourful style - she designed our logo, in collaboration with fellow #mrros artist Dorothy Davies! Emilys techniques are quite different to what you might expect; she creates her vibrant collages on the computer, layering and editing in pixels. Saying that, theyre firmly rooted in the bush, featuring seed pods, flowers and birdlife encountered on the Wadandi Track t...hat meanders near Emilys home studio. Visit Emily at her Margaret River studio. Margaret River Region Open Studios starts this Saturday 12 September and runs for 16 days, finishing on Sunday 27 September. 103 artists eagerly await your visit! @emily.jackson.art.design

14.01.2022 "My work is often reminiscent of classical paintings, and often remind people of medieval art, but I contrast the imagery with modern elements." - Lauren Wilhelm, artist Indeed, we love Lauren Wilhelms superb portraits; the way she blends classic elements with the suburban. The award-winning artist moved to Jindong from Perth seven years ago, and feels her art is more mellow and considered since making the move; "Im inspired by nature so much more." We think the regions wealth of artistic talent got even richer with Laurens arrival. Be sure to visit her rural shed-studio for a rare peek at her wonderful sculptures and paintings.

14.01.2022 "The desire to curl my hand around and fit my fingers into the shape of the handle pulls me ever closer..." This is a zoomed-in detail of Sue Evas latest work-in-progress, a beautiful still life composition. Such is the joy of Open Studios. We celebrate not only the complete, perfect, framed pieces. We also love peering over an artists shoulder as they paint, marvelling at their creative processes. Sue Evas home studio in Quedjinup, just moments from Yallingup and Dunsbor...ough, is as meticulous and charming as her paintings. She opens her studio just once a year, for Margaret River Region Open Studios, and invites you to visit - starting Saturday! @sueeva1 on Instagram

12.01.2022 A joyous garden-like tangle of colour is how we’d describe Tracey Bower’s canvases Tracey follows her intuition as she paints dream catchers and vibrant floral scenes. 10.01.2022 Someone asked this week if theres a central location where Open Studios starts from, a studio one should visit first. There isnt - you can carefully pick names from the event guide or simply drive around the region looking for the Open Studios signs. But if you had to pick a starting studio to get your bearings, it might just be The Farm Margaret River. Located on Burnside Road, and home to four amazing and diverse artists, its a beating heart of creative energy. Youll ...find jeweller Salli Coppin working with beautiful, raw gems. Artist and photographer Paul Gatopulosz painting portraits so realistic and true they could easily be mistaken for photographs. Photographer Martine Perret and her stunning collection of aerial landscapes and Indigenous portraits as well as books and scarves. And the clever mixed media artist Britta Sorensen who asks us how we coped with the COVID-19 induced lockdown. So, if you need a little help deciding where to start, The Farm is an excellent place to begin your art adventure. 07.01.2022 Rachel Coads art must be seen to be believed - and loved - such is its impact. Shes a gifted artist, able to capture the personality and character in larger than life portraits. 07.01.2022 With only 2.5 days to go, we’re proud to say this has been the best Open Studios so far. Many of our artists have had more visitors and more art sales, as well as wonderful moments connecting with art lovers and visiting studios themselves. Our heartfelt thanks go to you, our art loving community, for supporting this event. For visiting artists, for being curious about their art and for taking home treasures - paintings, prints, sculptures and more. Thank you also for navigating our Event Guides and bearing with us with the COVID-19 changes. Now, this is the glorious studio of painter Wes Nash. He’s actually an in-demand house painter but we think his true super power lies in capturing the natural beauty of the region in vibrant landscapes. Visit Wes in his Yallingup studio today, Saturday or Sunday - he’d love to welcome you.

07.01.2022 One of the great joys of Open Studios is discovering artists you hadnt heard of, and realising how much you love their work. We put husband and wife Wayne and Julie Smith squarely in this category - its their first time participating in Open Studios, and were not alone in feeling like we just found something special. Wayne - Wayne Smith Metal Sculpture - has worked with metal for 40 years, before winning the Emerging Artist Award at Sculptures by the Bay 2017 which prompted great interest in his work. Julie - Julie Ann Smith Arts and Crafts - makes superb felted creations with jewel-coloured wool, and vibrant abstract paintings. They share a love of garden design and their sprawling Yallingup garden is coming to life with spring blossom, adding another dimension to a wonderful Open Studio.

06.01.2022 With only five more days of Open Studios, it’s time to get serious and make sure you’ve visited all the wonderful artists you’d circled in the guide. They’ve poured blood, sweat and tears for twelve months preparing for this event! Lee-Anne Townrow in Margaret River is one such artist; she studies the natural beauty and imperfection in the incredible flora all around us. She’s captivated by the perfectly imperfect surface of a banksia nut, the flaking delicate layers of a paperbark tree and the worn and weathered story told on the surface of every rock. Nature lovers, be sure to see Lee-Anne and her wonderful studio before the event closes on Sunday

06.01.2022 When Open Studios was postponed, back in March/April, Jolene Hewison (@river.ceramics) started selling her superb functional pottery online. But when the event was rescheduled, she realised she had only four weeks to prepare a LOT of work... so get in quickly if you too are eyeing off her mugs, bowls and planters! In Jolenes words: "If I was to specialize in any particular area I would say sgraffito and ceramic art was my thing. Delving into wild clay, botanical and slip p...ainting to reflect the natural world as much as possible. I love our forests, beaches, streams and rivers. We spend time every day immersed in one of them, catching tadpoles, looking at wildflowers, surfing or walking, and Im so grateful to have that privilege." 06.01.2022 A lovely write up in the local paper about our successful opening weekend. Thanks Augusta Margaret River Mail!

05.01.2022 Busseltons Steve Vigors returns for the seventh Margaret River Region Open Studios and looks forward to welcoming you.

03.01.2022 Renowned artist Pat Negus opens her studio Swallows Welcome for the final time this weekend. Be sure to visit ahead of her retirement.

02.01.2022 In two weeks today, 103 artists will be opening their studio doors to you, art lovers, for the first time in nearly a year and a half! So much love, energy and hard work has gone into creating the art and a welcoming space, and we sincerely hope you love every moment of it. Now, Britta Sorensen (pictured in her home studio) originally planned to invite us all to bring a piece of green fabric, and weave it into a tapestry to send to communities affected by the horrific Austral...ian fires earlier this year, like green shoots growing hope. Life took a dramatic turn in 2020, and plans have changed. While we all acknowledge the difficulties these fire-ravaged communities still face, Britta has chosen a new theme for her interactive open studios art experience; The Pause. Covid has shaken us all in many different ways. What was your lock-down experience like? What have we learned? What might change? You are invited to join a casual sharing of stories. You will also be able - but not obliged - to participate in the making of a communal artwork. Meet Britta at The Farm Margaret River, a stunning spot where agriculture meets art, and fellow Open Studios artists Martine Perret, Paul Gatopulosz and Salli Coppin will showcase their creative spark. #MRROS runs 12 - 27 September with 103 artists opening their private studios to the public. Pick up a printed Event Guide from a Jacksons Drawing Supplies store, or download an updated guide at mrropenstudios.com.au

02.01.2022 THANK YOU from the whole #MRROS family. We hope you loved your art adventure as much as our artists loved painting, creating and welcoming you! 103 artists are enjoying a sleep in today after a wonderfully successful Open Studios event. Originally scheduled for April-May, we are so grateful to have been able to share our art with you this spring. So much so, we’re considering making Open Studios a spring event next year, too. There have been so many friendships forged and w...onderful stories, plus great conversations and new connections. It takes an incredible effort for the artists to create a collection of work twice this year, as many artists sold their art during COVID lockdown and had to make new pieces when the new dates were announced then have 16 days on their feet, welcoming guests and running their galleries. Hopefully they’re enjoying a quiet morning before bubble wrapping and arranging delivery of all the delights you’ve purchased! Once again, thank you for visiting Open Studios we are all so grateful for your support. Please visit mrropenstudios.com.au/win to complete our visitor survey - your feedback helps us improve the event, and there's the chance to win a $2,000 Cape Lodge prize. Photographed here: Pauline and Joanne Alferink at their Margaret River studio.
