Flood waters across the ACT and NSW caused issues for many residents and here at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary, our furry residents were ready to surf their way out! 25.01.2022 This stunning bird is a Brown Goshawk captured on one of our wildlife cameras in Goorooyarroo. They hunt small birds, small mammals, reptiles and insects. Their preferred habitat is dry, open eucalypt forest and woodland making Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary a perfect home. #bushcapital #boxgumgrassywoodlands #conservation

This little guy (or gal!) has been marked during the echidna sweep in Spring as a part of our yearly echidna counts. Kate Harriden is a proud Wiradjuri woman and a Phd Scholar at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, ANU. Kate believes that we should spend more time in our stormwater drains to allow us to think about stormwater management a little differently. ... F...lourishing nature and culture are at the heart of this plan which will involve an expansion into Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve embedding Ngunnawal culture into management of the Sanctuary adapting ecosystems to a changing climate inspiring change to benefit future generations. The strategy will be implemented in partnership with ACT Government, Woodlands and Wetlands Trust and The Australian National University. 16.01.2022 This year we got our act together and made a cake to enter in the Threatened Species Bake Off! In protecting the largest patch of critically endangered Box-Gum grassy woodland in public ownership, Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is helping conserve many threatened species including the Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii). At Mulligans the Superb parrots nest in our Scribbly gums and Blakely’s red gums that are old enough to have developed hollows. They can be seen and he...ard in Mulligans Flat during their breeding season from September to January. Now is a good time to head into the sanctuary to spot them! 16.01.2022 Today some of our volunteers spent the day with local Ngunnawal man Richie Allan from Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Bill Bashford of Solid Aboriginal Consultancy and Aaron Chatfield of Dreamtime Connections to learn about the importance of Ngunnawal culture in Mulligans Flat. This group of volunteers are in training to engage with the community when our new Learning Centre opens in Throsby. Today was an incredible day for all of us to learn about building respectful relationships with both humans and mother nature. And we can’t wait to share it all with you!

14.01.2022 Last Saturday saw another group of committed volunteers gather to help the Trust count our echidnas at Mulligans Flat. This was the second week of the count and will provide us with enough data to estimate the echidna population within our predator proof fence. Stay tuned for results! It was sensational weather and teams searched far and wide across the Sanctuary. Our spikey friends proved tricky to find with the long grass but we did uncover a few! 10.01.2022 Looking for a new hobby? Researchers are hoping Canberrans will get down and dirty and help collect possum poo. It's for a study on antibiotic-resistant bacte...ria possum droppings were chosen for the project because the marsupials commonly live in urban areas alongside people. And don't worry if you don't have a yard, there's plenty of possum poo in Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary with staff providing hundreds of free collection jars for the sought after nuggets.

08.01.2022 You may have noticed some recent additions to our Wollshed. Year four students from Amaroo School created art inspired by three very special creatures found in Mulligans: the bettong, bush-stone curlew and echidna. You can check out their masterpieces all school holidays. Thanks to CPAS students at The Australian National University students for running the workshop.

08.01.2022 On Bettong Bungalow this week learn how 200 to 500 year old gumtrees saved a crucial piece of bushland from development. Miles Boak, retired Environmental Planner with over 40 years experience will be our guest as he tells us the fascinating story of the Kenny offset. In the 90s, lone paddock trees were thought to be insignificant for conservation but Miles will tell us how ecologists found they are needed in the landscape.... These paddock trees became one of the reasons to save the box gum woodland at Kenny, just down the road from Mulligans Flat. 07.01.2022 It’s Golden Sun-Moth season! These little moths are very important as they’re nationally recognised as critically endangered. Today a bunch of our volunteers did surveys in areas where moths could be present and found them! We are always so grateful for our volunteers giving up their time to help out in the sanctuary. Thanks to Michael Mulvaney for helping train our vollies!

Join Alison Pouliot, an ecologist and environmental photographer, for a weekend exploring the ecology and curiosities of the Kingdom fungi. Fungi are diverse, delicious and sometimes deadly. With interest in foraging for wild food on the rise, learning to accurately identify fungi reduces both poisoning risk to humans and harm to the environment.... Wild Mushrooming Friday 30 April 6pm to 7pm Five years in the making, authors Alison Pouliot and Tom May present Wild Mushrooming: a guide for foragers, the first guide to edible (and toxic!) fungi in Australia. Join Alison Pouliot to hear some anecdotes about the research and writing of this book. Where: Forde Community Centre Mushroom Discovery Workshop Saturday 1 May 9am to 3pm This workshop includes an interactive session on the basics of fungus identification and how to recognise the various diagnostic characteristics used to identify fungi in the field. Conservation Research at ACT Government keep tabs on the bigger macropods and support our reintroductions. With our partners Odonata and Mt Rothwell - Biodiversity Interpretation Centre we share critters for conservation and much more! The team at WildLab in Sydney are helping us with turtles, and our recently announced partnership with Scoop a Poop Project is putting the nocturnal shenanigans and diets of possums in the spotlight.
