22.01.2022 CHINWAG: Positive Connection was a NAPWHA initiative designed to meet the social and support needs of people living with HIV (PLHIV) during the height of COVID-19. 20.01.2022 The Australian theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is ‘Now more than ever'. To mark the event, NAPWHA asked a wide range of community advocates and the leaders of our member organisations and partners in the response to reflect on what the theme means to them. These short but immensley powerful quotes not only illustrate how far we have come, they also pose a strong call to action for the future of the HIV sector and our hopes for all people living with HIV in Australia.

18.01.2022 This September, Positive Life NSW launches a new social media campaign + updated factsheet aiming to raise awareness of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers for people living with HIV (PLHIV) encouraging all women including trans and gender people with a cervix who are living with HIV, to ask for a cervical screen at their local GP, Aboriginal Medical Service or sexual health clinic. "Women and people living with HIV who have a cervix, have roughly five times higher the risk than the general population for developing cervical cancer," said Jane Costello, Positive Life CEO. "It is a sad reality that we remain under-represented in cervical screening and over-represented in HPV-related cancer statistics." Find where to go to get tested at Sexual Health Clinic locations and find out more about the campaign.

13.01.2022 Increasing amounts of our personal health information is being recorded, collected and shared by government agencies and private organisations. Should people with HIV and other priority populations trust government assurances of a digital utopia in which we may achieve unprecedented gains in individual and population health? Or are we right to be concerned that our health information will be used to continue the long history of surveillance, over-policing and criminalisation ...of our communities by the State? Is the end of privacy inevitable or can we do something to avoid its worst effects? NAPWHA have organised esteemed panellists who will tackle these questions and more at the Australasian HIV & Sexual Health Virtual Conference #AUSHIV20 #SH20 The Panelists are: Chair Aaron Cogle Executive Director of National Association of People with HIV Lizzie O’Shea Lawyer, Writer, Broadcaster and founder of Digital Rights Watch Lizzie will share her insights about the ever-increasing amount of our data that is being shared, if we can produce a data sharing social contract and how we share in the benefits of data, while mitigating the harms. Christy Newman and Anthony K J Smith social researchers from UNSW Centre for Social Research in Health (CSRH) discussing the findings of their recent study Trust in Digital Health Paul Kidd Community Lawyer, Fitzroy Legal Service, talking about health surveillance of people with HIV and the criminal law. Rhys Evans Solicitor, HIV AIDS Legal Centre, talking about the recent submissions of HALC, PLNSW, NAPWHA and Scarlet Alliance to the consultation on the Data Availability and Transparency Bill 2020. If you are attending the Australasian HIV & Sexual Health Joint Conference we hope to see you there 2pm 3:30pm on Monday 16 November.

12.01.2022 HEAR from Richard Keane, Living Positive Victoria (LPV) CEO, presenting as part of a webinar where he addressed some key concerns and challenges faced by the communities of people living with HIV in Victoria with regard to re-engaging with healthcare. Partnering in the Continuity of Care Collaboration (CCC), LPV are promoting a new national campaign #DontWaitMate encouraging people to not delay vital doctor visits and imparting a key message to community members that ‘engagin...g in care IS self-care’. Across the board, from GP visits, to pathology, to screening, to acute care presentations, there has been a significant drop-off in Australians taking care of their health. And while this is understandable due to COVID-19, it could lead to long-term health consequences for the patient and the community. 09.01.2022 #DontWaitMate: The Continuity of Care Collaboration (CCC)* announce a new campaign to encourage Australians not to delay vital healthcare if you have put off an appointment, now is the time to get in touch with healthcare providers. The 'Dont Wait Mate' campaign is the result of concerning data that shows a decrease in patient attendance at various health services across Australia. It's raising awareness of the importance of continuing regular healthcare and to ensure that... Australians feel safe and confident to access care during the pandemic. According to research by the RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners) there was a drop of 24% in face-to-face consultations in June 2020 compared to the same month last year. During the first wave of COVID-19, pathology testing rates were down 40% on average across Australia and are currently down by 25% in Victoria. Data from a major private laboratory and representative of national trends revealed that: In April 2020, diabetes testing rates fell 54% compared to the weekly average in February 2020. Cervical cancer screening rates fell by 67%, tests for prostate cancer reduced by 56%, and other cancer related tests dropped by as much as 60%. Although healthcare is one of the permitted reasons to leave home under COVID-19 restrictions, patients are still delaying seeking the care they need to manage chronic conditions, or to address new symptoms. 02.01.2022 Sex can be a difficult topic to discuss at the best of times, given it speaks to highly personal and intimate feelings we have about ourselves and others. But i...n COVID, with uncertainty about risk factors for transmission of the virus, it is extremely hard to get most people to open up about the issues it raises. 02.01.2022 Timothy Ray Brown (the first person cured of HIV) and his partner Tim Hoeffgen share an emotional interview in the final chapter of Timothy's remarkable life journey with Mark S. King (the writer and activist behind My Fabulous Disease). They are making the most out of these precious days together. Timothy is not dying from HIV, just to be clear, Tim (his partner) says. HIV has not been found in his blood stream since he was cured. That’s gone. This is from the leukemia. ...God, I hate cancer. Timothy has dutifully fulfilled countless media requests and invitations over the years, becoming an active public figure in the HIV/AIDS arena in spite of his social reluctance. He embodies a shared hope for a practical HIV/AIDS cure. At conferences and community events, people living with HIV gravitate to Timothy, reaching out for hugs and thanking him for the physical gauntlet he has been through. He is a projection of our longing for scientific discoveries and a marker for just how far we have come. Tim Hoeffgen, meanwhile, has been Timothy’s loving guardian, intervening as necessary to be sure Timothy wasn’t overwhelmed by requests. He has played the role of media agent and even bad cop in order to safely buffer Timothy. Mark S. King asks Tim if his partner knows he is dying. Yes, he knows, Tim answers. Well, sometimes he doesn’t. It depends. But I have asked him what he wants me to tell people when we make his situation public. He said, ‘Tell people to keep fighting. Fight for a cure for HIV that works for everyone. I never wanted to be the only one.’ * Mark S. King's article was republished via HIV Plus Magazine ** Timothy Ray Brown published 'I Am the Berlin Patient: A Personal Reflection' in 2015 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4287108/ https://www.hivplusmag.com//berlin-patient-timothy-ray-bro
