21.01.2022 WERE HERE TO HELP Our dedicated team of Pinc&Steel Cancer Rehab Physios and OTs, are working hard during this extraordinary time to provide frontline care at ...hospitals, while others have reorganised their outpatient services and private clinics so they can continue to provide vital support via Telehealth. Although many of our clinic doors are closed, we are still very open and available to support people through online consultations. How does Telehealth work? The online consultations enable you to discuss your symptoms, questions and concerns with a Cancer Rehab Therapist in the comfort of your own home, eliminating travel time and risk of infection. Your Physio can assess, diagnosis and treat online. They will ask a series of questions about your symptoms (condition) and safely guide you through a series of tests and movements to diagnose your condition. They can develop a personalised recovery plan and show you what you can do to help manage your symptoms. This may also include how other people you live with can help and support you with your rehab. It is a really vital way to continue with your rehab and not lose the gains you have made. Your Physio can check you are doing your exercises correctly and progress them. This is so important from a physical and mental health point of view. Physical impairments that might be relatively easily addressed if detected early can become very difficult to treat and costly if they have progressed over weeks and months. Therefore, it is important if you are worried about something (for example, something is painful or doesnt move well), you make use of Telehealth services. Weve had wonderful feedback already from people using our Telehealth services regarding their gratitude in someone being available and able to reassure them. 18.01.2022 Imagine youre going about your day, minding your own business, when someone sneaks up behind you... You feel something press up against the back of your head, ...as someone whispers in your ear. "Sssshhhhh.... dont turn around. Just listen. I am holding a gun against the back of your head. Im going to keep it there. Im going to follow you around like this every day, for the rest of your life." "Im going to press a bit harder, every so often, just to remind you Im here, but you need to try your best to ignore me, to move on with your life. Act like Im not here, but dont you ever forget... one day I may just pull the trigger... or maybe I wont. Isnt this going to be a fun game?" This is what it is like to be diagnosed with cancer. Any STAGE of cancer. Any KIND of cancer. Remission does not change the constant fear. It never truly goes away. Its always in the back of your mind. Please, if you have a loved one who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, remember this. They may never talk about it or they may talk about it often. Listen to them. They arent asking you to make it better. They want you to sit with them in their fear... their sadness... their anger... just for the moment. Thats it. Dont try to talk them out of how they are feeling. That doesnt help. It will only make them feel like what they are going through is being minimized. Dont remind them of all the good things they still have in their life. They know. They are grateful. But some days they are more aware of that gun pressing into the back of their head and they need to talk about it. Offer them an ear. 17.01.2022 People affected by cancer are depending on hundreds of thousands of random strangers to be vigilant and take sensible precautions, not because they are worried they might die of the COVID19, but because they care enough about potentially thousands of vulnerable people who could. #takecareofyourselfandothers https://mobile.abc.net.au//cancer-chemo-and-coron/12056582?

15.01.2022 Last Sunday Daina and I headed down to Sandgate to start checking out the local surrounds for our PaddleOn course for next year ... After an ankle sprain 7 weeks ago I will be honest it was a bit scary getting up on the board again but it was the BEST thing I could have done - for my confidence and my ankle rehab. So if you are keen for next year but nervous just know its all part of the process. We have been there and know how it feels both to be scared and to experience the exhilaration of being out on the water and conquering that board ! Have a stunning Saturday everyone !

11.01.2022 Great news from the Australian Government today announcing new Medicare rebates that will directly benefit Australians affected by breast cancer. From today (1 ...November), women with or suspected of having breast cancer will be able to claim Medicare benefits for breast MRI scans. New rebates are also available for some PET scan services. Advocacy has always been at the heart of #bcnapinklady, and we called for these changes in our State of the Nation report released last year. We continue to improve the lives of those affected by breast cancer who are missing out today, and to make sure that no one misses out tomorrow. Huge thank you to WA breast surgeon Professor Christobel Saunders for her work in preparing the MRI submissions. Thanks also to Health Minister @greghuntmp for listening and responding to the voice of all Australians affected by breast cancer. Find out more here. https://buff.ly/2BZ6skb See more

11.01.2022 Can cancer rehab help those with ADVANCED CANCER There are many people in our communities living with advanced cancer, and due to advances in treatments they... are living for much longer than ever before. This is making living well during the years after a life limiting diagnosis more vitally important to address. Despite a growing interest around what constitutes quality of life for those with such a diagnosis, the majority of this expanding sector of the population are still missing out on cancer rehabilitation. THIS MUST CHANGE. Studies have found that some of the most distressing concerns for the advanced cancer population are functional decline, dependency and uncontrolled symptoms. Symptom burden has been identified as the greatest contributor to a lower quality of life. These studies, and others are the reason why identifying and treating sources of functional compromise that can be minimized or eliminated, is absolutely necessary for those with advanced cancer. These are the aspects of living well where participation in cancer rehabilitation can offer the biggest impacts. The areas of decline that cannot be eliminated and are inevitably experienced by those with advancing cancer can often be decelerated by participation in cancer rehabilitation, meaning that functional decline does not have to go hand in hand with helplessness <3. 08.01.2022 I took the chance yesterday to grab a quick walk around the local lake I am blessed to work near. My son had to be at school early and that meant I got to work early. I could have buried myself in emails and to do lists, but I chose the lake. I was so glad I did - its so easy to do and also not to do - but being in nature and coming across our local family of swans was just delightful. I also saw a man wearing weights on his legs and holding dumbbells. He wasnt moving ea...sily or quickly but it reinforced for me that there really is no excuse not to move in some way. How are you choosing to move over sitting still this week? And how is it making you feel?

07.01.2022 "No one tells you about the after effects of cancer, only about getting rid of the cancer. I found it really hard both during and after my treatment to accept... how much my body had changed and to get use to the new me. Doing weekly cancer rehab throughout motivated me to keep going and to get stronger. I think if I hadnt been able to participate in Pinc & Steel cancer rehab with Jonty I would have been less active, and much less motivated. Everyone with a cancer diagnosis should be able to get help, even if its a little bit each week it really helps both the body and the mind to recover!"
