25.01.2022 Pioneer Catchment Landcare has been busy! Check out some of our activities in October! We also collected rubbish with Tangaroa Blue and Conservation Volunteers Australia at the harbour, planted trees and did some weeding on reveg sites with volunteers and new casual reveg staff around the region! Exciting times ahead - watch this space for Novembers' activities

21.01.2022 What an exciting Junior Landcare project- well done Capricorn Coast Landcare! In 2018-2019 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants helped over 100,000 Australian students to get their hands dirty and learn about the environment & sustainability. The next round of funding will open in 2021. 20.01.2022 Sometrhing interesting for a Friday evening....

19.01.2022 The nursery is full of little people today! Mackay Regional Council Natural Environment Centre staff have opened the doors today to a group of keen budding nursery helpers form Mackay Christian College as part of the DBCT Vines Creek Wetland restoration project. Last week we planted out 100 native trees at the wetland restoration project site on Ambrose Way. ... Yesterday we talked to Phil Trendal from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries about why wetlands are so important to the environment, in particular the role of healthy stream banks and vegetation on water quality. Today Sue, Carolyn, Erin from MRC and Tom (PCL) will be showing the Year 5 students what goes on at the native plant nursery. Using locally collected seeds, the students will perform nursery duties in the seed propagation process and make seed bombs (!) There's smiles all round - thanks everyone for helping make today a fun learning experience for our future Wetland Warriors! #MCCVinesCreekWetland #dbct #dalrymplebaycoalterminal #MRC #PCL #PioneerCatchmentLandcare

14.01.2022 Central Qld Coast Landcare Network members had the BEST day at the Finch Hatton Showgrounds today supporting the Reef Catchments- Glencore field day - Bring Your Land to Life. Big shout out to the Landcare crew on-ground: Peter Alden, Morgan Thomas, Lachlan McBride, Tom Crow and Nichole Zahra for all their hard work. The Team gave out a tonne of information about pest management, regenerative agriculture, soil health, the benefits of revegetating using local native species plus loads more. It fantastic to be out in the community doing what we do best.

13.01.2022 A big thank you to everyone who came out to one of our Great Barrier Reef Clean-up launch events at Harbour Beach in Mackay yesterday! We had such a great turn...out of dedicated volunteers from the community, including a number of kids who were absolute legends! Some of them had to practically be pulled away from the debris sorting area at the end of the day, whilst others took home treasures to re-purpose. Together we picked up 137.5kg and 40 bags of debris, a total of 3,031 items! We found the usual culprits, including 188 food packaging items and 175 lids. What was particularly shocking at this site, however, was the large amount of glitter/confetti scattered throughout the park and sand dunes. We also found 130 pieces of plastic shavings from ships/boats rubbing against the local jetties, and a number of OH&S tags, pictured below. Disappointingly, we found two Woolworths Ooshies, which people are apparently trailing as bait for a silly fishing trend on the internet! It was interesting to see that this site collected not only local litter, but also foreign items such as water bottles and packaging from overseas. All of this data was of course entered into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database. We’d like to extend a massive thankyou to George Tonga, #Yuwibara Elder and member of the local Traditional Owner Reference Group (TORG), for Welcoming us onto Yuwi Lands and sharing his knowledge. A big shout out also to representatives from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Pioneer Catchment & Landcare Group Inc., Reef Catchments and Mackay Regional Council for attending on the day and assisting us with logistics for the event, as well as Y.A.W for the delicious lunch. We look forward to seeing you all again at another Mackay event! #AMDI Tangaroa Blue #LeaveItBetterThanYouFoundIt ABC Tropical North 7NEWS Mackay Star 101.9 Mackay Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment Tangaroa Blue Great Barrier Reef Action Plan

07.01.2022 Warning: magpies swooping at the MNEC PCL will be keeping the pedestrian gate locked until further notice. The magpies appear as soon as you exit your vehicle if you park out the front of the MNEC. Apparently, people in orange shirts are not targeted. We recommend wearing orange and a wide brimmed hat and /or carry an umbrella when attending the nursery or PCL office.... #magpieswooping #pcl #mnec #mrc
