25.01.2022 Sukkot starts tomorrow night. Be our guests! www.VirtualMishpacha.org.au

25.01.2022 9 November 1938. Kristallnacht. The night of broken glass. The beginning of 3 days described as an orgy of destruction that raged across Germany and Austria. NEVER AGAIN!... There was death, injury and significant property damage. Most of the violence was conducted by Nazis masquerading as citizens to present it as a popular uprising. They took to synagogues with torches, axes and sledgehammers; sacred texts were burned; Jewish cemeteries were destroyed, graves were opened and corpses defiled. Jewish businesses had every window smashed; paperwork was burned and stock was destroyed. More than 1,000 synagogues were burned or severely damaged by fire; 7,500 Jewish businesses were ransacked and looted ;and 97 Jews were killed. A further 30,000 Jewish men and youths were rounded up, arrested and transported to concentration camps. A unique cantata showcasing the events surrounding Kristallnacht, entitled 'The Kristallnacht Cantata: a Voice of Courage' was composed by Alon Trigger as a commemoration of Otto Jontof-Hutter, father of Ron Jontof-Hutter, and of William Cooper, the Aboriginal man who led a march to the German Embassy in Melbourne to deliver a petition of protest against Krristallnacht. The Cantata is definitely worth listening to. Visit https://www.jwire.com.au/the-kristallnacht-cantata-a-voice/ for a description and explanation of the cantata; visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3IlzEAwmIk for a promo with subtitles of the Cantata, and visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP4GLUDoH-E to watch the world premier of the piece at Temple Beth Israel in December 2019. The Cantata and its introduction starts at 1:35:18. NEVER AGAIN!

09.01.2022 POPE FRANCIS SENDS CHANUKAH GREETINGS TO HEAD OF GLOBAL REFORM AND PROGRESSIVE JEWISH MOVEMENT Many Candles, One World is the first virtual Chanukah celebration... of the global Reform and Progressive Movement, a community of 1.2 million members in 1,200 communities and congregations in over 50 countries. Featuring stars from the worlds of theater, television, and music, performing alongside cantors and choirs, this year’s online event emphasizes the universal connection and message of the holiday: the light of hope and the strength of tradition to bring us all together, even if we are apart this year. The event will also feature a message of goodwill from Pope Francis, the Head of the Catholic Church, who sent a handwritten, personal message to Rabbi Sergio Bergman, the WUPJ President, as a gesture of friendship and aimed at reaching across religions to connect everyone with his moving prayer for all of humankind of every religion to bask in brighter days ahead. The two religious leaders first met in their native Argentina and have shared moments of both joy and pain over the years, including a 2012 Hanukkah Interfaith Celebration lighting candles together at the synagogue in Buenos Aires. And thank YOU, our members and friends, for giving of our hearts and souls as we participated in the services and discussions from the safety of our homes.
