25.01.2022 A next level approach to giving back to your community...a wonderful legacy to leave.

24.01.2022 One thing we can control is effort (Mark Cuban) With so much out of our control at the moment, it is nice to have little wins. This is my third attempt to remove the smell left by spilt chocolate milk in my car.... I am pleased to report the Australian made and owned product seems to have done the job. It is also great at removing marks off the ceiling of the vehicle left by dirty work hats Go Aussie wishing you all a great start to your week.

24.01.2022 Sharing for anyone else who did not know about the importance of purple stems.

23.01.2022 Today the search begins for the 2021 LACHLAN HUGHES FOUNDATION SCHOLAR .. APPLICATIONS are now OPEN .. The Board members of the #LachlanHughesFoundation op...ened applications for the second Scholarship today Monday 7th December, with a closing date of 31st January 2021. Are you passionate about the Australian beef industry? Do you believe in the necessity to regenerate our soils and retain moisture? Do you want to learn more about natural sequence farming practices? Do you want to revitalise our rural communities and industry? Are you passionate about regenerative agriculture? Lachlan died just over 2 years ago; he was passionate about saving our #grazing lands. He believed that by rebuilding our depleted #soils, better utilising rainfall and water runoff, and operating the grazing lands in a sustainable way, we could revitalize our rural #communities and improve the economic sustainability of the industry by ‘returning life to the land’. The annual #Scholarship was established in Lachlan’s honour and funds the scholar to complete suitable courses and training that will assist them with their own on-farm project. They will be supported throughout by a mentor and a network of specialists in their fields. The Lachlan Hughes Foundation is about real people, making real change! 23.01.2022 Thanks again to Queensland Country Life for the opportunity to contribute to the View from the Paddock column. When you have a limit of 400 words it is challenging to articulate your thoughts . This commentary took a little longer to write because I dont want to sound like I am telling people what to do. But, at the same time, I think this is one of the conversations farming families need to include in their future discussions.

23.01.2022 Thankyou once again to the Queensland Country Life for the opportunity to contribute my thoughts. Thanks also to Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Womens Network for sponsoring the Governance Essentials course. As a director of our company, I have certainly added a few jobs to my to-do list for the rest of the year.

23.01.2022 Fantastic recognition for Tash and her Drought Angels team

22.01.2022 As I listened to this song I thought of all the old farmers who this song could be talking about. I am sure I am not the only one...

22.01.2022 "Theres an incredible sense of resilience and an incredible amount of passion and energy in the next generation. We are here because we have actively decided to be involved in the industry, not through a lack of our parents possibly telling us to choose otherwise," she said.

22.01.2022 Ok, so as a family we have been tuning into the latest season of Farmer Wantsawife and the usual giggles and groans have continued this season. Most reality TV shows aren't family friendly so we are trying to give this one a go. But only a few episodes in we are struggling... Why?... Because, it really isn't reality TV if you look at it from a farmer's perspective. I'd say some of the shiny new cars are there thanks to the Toyota sponsorship. We know some of the blokes in the past use their parents' farms, but I hope the story about the Sydney based hopeful Sam using his friend's farm isn't true. I'm sure I am not the only one thinking WH&S risk with all those candles in the shearing shed yet again. You really hope those people that put themselves out there on national tv do find a genuine connection with their 'soul-mate' but I can't help but think that the decent ones won't stick around and put up with the current format.

22.01.2022 What a fantastic initiative for outback airstrips.

22.01.2022 5 simple rules to dance, dad style that you can try at home

20.01.2022 It will be interesting to understand the specific implications of this policy amendment. I know the Government has been doing work to understand the risks posed when the csg areas are handed back to the landholders after drilling projects have been wound up in the coming decades. Obviously, they arent the only ones with concerns. https://www.abc.net.au//coal-seam-gas-farmers-que/12337156

18.01.2022 In good times and bad there is something comforting about stability and consistency. What a shame to read that leaving Landline is not Kerry’s decision. #keepkerry

17.01.2022 I am not sure if this is the same property that we heard about recently. The issue for the landholder in that case was that the survey was done in an area not where the proposed pipeline activities were to go. The people doing the survey went to unauthorised areas on the property kilometres from the proposed pipeline area and identified online and trigger mapping resulted from their inspection.... Dont assume the law is fair, all judges can do is rule in accordance with the legislation. The csg legislation is about an inch thick, but only one page is of key importance to landholders. If you arent informed on the five heads of compensation and you have a CCA to negotiate I highly recommend you start reading.

17.01.2022 ICPA QLD INC - Isolated Childrens Parents Association Queensland Inc need everyones support to back this campaign for boarding students who have not been able to return to school due to regulations imposed by the Government and Qld Health. Our daughters school could only take a certain number of students back this term and we initially agreed to keep her home for the whole term when schools reopened. However, after the first day of classes when most students were in the c...lassroom, the impact on those at home was immediate. The teachers were unable to operate the interactive online technology and teach in the class room at the same time. So those students not in the classroom missed out on the lesson and had to work through the lessons on their own. We were fortunate because the school was able to make some additional changes and allow extra students into boarding. But not all students could return. The impact on my daughters well-being was immediate when she returned to learning in the classroom. Some boarding schools were unable to take boarders this term and they do not have an answer about term 3 yet. Given the continual easing of restrictions, surely boarders should be allowed to return. The schools want them back, the students want to go back and their families are desperate for their children to go back into boarding. #bringourboardersback

17.01.2022 Need a laugh? This is a nice break from the negative news.

17.01.2022 Surely the Chief Medical Officer has to factor in the mental health implications of current policies.

17.01.2022 At the start of another week of home schooling 3 children, I am reminded of how lucky our children are to grow up in rural Australia. Being part of our local community means they have access to amazing role models who generously contribute their time in the service of others Being members of our family means they understand what were all in this together is really about... Being able to spend time in nature means they know how important it is to look after all creatures great and small and their environment It also reminds me why reliable and affordable internet access is so important and how grateful I am for the efforts of the Better Internet For Rural, Regional And Remote Australia (BIRRR) team. The same goes for access to equitable education delivery and the ICPA QLD INC - Isolated Childrens Parents Association Queensland Inc volunteers also deserve a huge thankyou for the work being done to assist boarders return to school. Can you think of 3 things you are grateful for that can help you start your week in a good frame of mind?

17.01.2022 Its National Farm Safety week which makes it a great time to do a quick review with regards to your business. If there is an incident on your property, you must remember as a place of business, you will be open to scrutiny and asked to prove your commitment to safety. How are your first aid kits looking and do you have enough?... Are you recording notes in your diary about important conversations regarding staff interactions where you have had to pull them up on their behaviour, or simply remind them of your company policies? It isnt good enough to just have policies, you need to be able to demonstrate you do what you say. Common sense doesnt always prevail. Good communication is essential, because the assets at risks arent just yours. People make Ag what it is and we need to look after each other, as well as out for each other.

16.01.2022 I don't know anyone who thinks it is a good idea for Kerry to leave Landline. Who at the ABC thought getting rid of him would be in the best interests of those who actually watch the show? I don't think now is the time for Landline to have a new direction.

16.01.2022 If you have seen any of my sanity saver videos you will know the latest post on the website has been on the go for a while. While a lot has not changed for those living on the land, there has certainly had to be adjustments made. 3 children doing schoolwork with dodgy internet has not been fun. Managing individual expectations and anxieties has been a priority. So, I am pleased that a quiet moment has been found to use the computer and load the article to the website.... I am sure you each have your own tips that get you through challenging times. Just remember to take care of yourself as well as those around you. Happy Friday https://www.ruralresources.com.au//17-tips-lessons-from-t/

15.01.2022 DO YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO'D BE INTERESTED? A six bedroom, two bathroom, newly painted house with a renovated kitchen at $300 dollars a week sounds like a good deal..., given the Sunshine Coast's rental crisis, that's leaving so many families homeless. And it comes with a permanent job, bringing in between $70,000 to $75,000 a year. But despite these drawcards, Obi Obi Dairy at Kenilworth can't fill a skilled herd manager position that's been vacant since January. Sara Bucher (Booker) and her husband Markus also own Maleny Cheese - between those businesses, there are five permanent jobs that need workers.

15.01.2022 The voices the Government should listen to.

13.01.2022 So whats in your fridge? I love the fact that when I tell people about our family business and answer questions on how we manage the animals and environment, they always ask the same question. So how do we buy your beef? ... Its always the same response. Then I explain how 70% of Australian grown produce is exported, including our organic beef. I remember this question when I put my consumer hat on. Its worth the effort to support Australian farmers achieve a sustainable livelihood and receive fair prices for their products. I may pay a bit more, but then I simply stay away from the higher priced processed foods as much as possible and know I am better for my choices. So my challenge to you today is to think about what you are putting in your fridge that supports Aussie Farmers.

12.01.2022 What a great early Christmas present for the BIRRR team. Let's hope this new hub can take the workload off this wonderful group of volunteers.

12.01.2022 As parents of a Qld boarder we are so grateful to have a full house these coming school holidays. The fact the Premier does not directly respond to the concerns of families, schools and the community means this is not about leadership in times of a national crisis. Politics should never be played and prioritised above the mental health of young children and their families.

12.01.2022 #Australianmade I was sent info about this product and I am pleased to say the reply to my question was: "yes Brigid, its Australian made in our factory in Pendle Hill (western Sydney)"... I also like the fact its made out of recycled materials. We dont use electric fencing so I cant offer any feedback, but for those who do and are wanting an Australian product you may be interested in this:

12.01.2022 I am not a regular podcast listener but do enjoy them when I get a chance. This morning the near dead bananas were calling me to stop and make a banana bread so I thought I would listen to another Motherland Australia podcast while in the kitchen. When I saw Stephanie Schmidts name on the list of ladies who have been interviewed I knew that she would be a great choice.... If you have small children, teenage children or friends having children this episode is worth a listen. If you are a women on the land or feeling isolated it is also worth choosing because she mentions issues we can all relate to and it is always reassuring to know you are not alone. https://podtail.com//motherl/episode-20-stephanie-schmidt/

11.01.2022 Want to know what small investment has a big return? Well as the social interaction ramps up I have a tip to pass on for the ladies. But I also want you to put your business hat on and think about safety for a minute and where your business stands in terms of proving its commitment to safety.... Sometimes the simple things you do make all the difference

11.01.2022 Last week the Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) announced there will be an additional $2billion added to their existing loans and that the AgriStarter loan ...- to assist in buying an existing farm business, undertaking succession arrangements or establishing a new farm business - will commence in 2021. Information about the starter loan available is that up to $2 million can be borrowed over 10 years with first five years interest-only, the variable interest rate is 1.92 per cent from 1 August 2020, and applicants must demonstrate they are in need of financial assistance and have sound prospects of long-term financial viability. You can read more about the announcement -> https://farmtable.com.au/ric-welcomes-additional-2-billion/

10.01.2022 This is the most water to reach the Narran Lakes since 2012," Swirepik said last week. "We are thrilled to see nature gradually bouncing back to life in such an important part of Australia." "This is exactly why media narratives should be driven by thoughtful, balanced editors not unfiltered, unverified tweets," he said. Social media provides an opportunity to engage, inform and improve communication. ... Its unfortunate some platforms like Twitter cultivate a negative environment.

10.01.2022 The things we do for a family photo Having been a regular reader over the years it’s a bit surreal seeing and reading about family and friends in the current R.M.Williams Outback magazine. Thankyou Mandy McKeesick for another wonderful read and for showcasing our local attractions.

09.01.2022 Today there will be many Facebook posts and conversations about mental health. If you havent thought about using this reminder to check in on a friend then now is the time. I have read some powerful, and I would call brave, personal stories today about individual struggles. We all have moments where things get you down and it feels like a dark cloud is looming overhead.... For some the time periods are longer than others and the pathway out of the sadness is steep. For some Covid has made the situation worse, for others there will be other triggers. I dont have any answers or advice. I am grateful the topic of wellness and mental health are becoming more important conversation starters on days like today. Sending hugs to anyone who needs one today. I hope you are all ok . If not reach out.

09.01.2022 So what do you think of when you see this? Having survived another week of sad news stories, I think the quote should be you dont realise what you have until its gone. But for anyone who knows my husband I think it has to be Im always in the sh*t, its just the depth that varies, as he likes to tell people.... Whatever comes to mind, I would love for you to think of it when you next buy toilet paper. Please remember there are many ways you can support Australian made and owned when you shop. The choice is yours

08.01.2022 There are unfortunately too many succession stories where the ending is not a happy one. Decades worth of hard work, commitment and sacrifice go into building and sustaining farming businesses. Yet many families do not have the uncomfortable conversations around succession that enable plans to be put into place, documented and acted upon.... Success should not be defined simply in terms of assets, but also in terms of healthy relationships and good mental health. "The costs that would have been involved in going through two full hearings, and now a third one in the High Court (particularly if leave is granted) would be significant. There is also a huge emotional toll and trauma on the family."

08.01.2022 It's finally official and that means my first "experiential learning experience" in the Kimberley is less than a month away. The official program outline is: The ARLP is Australia’s longest and most in-depth experiential leadership program designed to build leadership capability in people in rural, regional and remote Australia.... The program gives participants valuable opportunities to enhance their capacity and create a network of like-minded leaders to positively influence their organisations, industries and communities. This translates into my doctor agreeing and signing off that I could survive two weeks outdoors in remote Northern Western Australia in an environment that is "challenging and involves activities that participants can find physically, mentally and emotionally strenuous". Thanks to Meat & Livestock Australia for providing my scholarship. This means this exciting adventure has been made possible by the beef, sheep and goats producers of Australia. Now that's a lot of thankyous

07.01.2022 I wish more people would stop and ask themselves what is my definition of success? Then I wish they would do the same for their business. It is possible to separate the family business from the business of family and still operate your business as a family.... For many it is not an easy path to choose. Uncomfortable conversations are never fun. Unfortunately, too many people involved in multi-generational farming families dont feel like their contribution is valued and their opinions matter because they dont have the systems and processes in place to facilitate the opportunity. Imagine how much better Christmas would be if they did

07.01.2022 Australian farmers are known for their adaptability, innovative practices and outstanding work ethic. We often think of change as a reaction to external factors impacting our business such as compliance changes and consumer trends. We forget about the important internal factors.... Family dynamics change as we grow, find a partner, have children and establish new priorities. At the same time the business grows and the asset values increase. When mulitple families and generations are involved things can get complicated. So how do families prepare for growth, complications and change management? The smart ones talk about their goals, develop a plan to achieve them and take into consideration the impact on all family members when they review them. Its so important to feel loved, seen and valued and yet so much time is spent dealing with Industry issues that we overlook the need to look after those closest to us. Next time you ask what is our definition of success remember all the assets in your business.

07.01.2022 An informative, webinar and article with comments worth reading. Thank goodness for those who take the time to understand these complex issues, the impact on producers and are able to articulate solutions moving forward.

07.01.2022 Dont you love videos that make you smile every time you watch them and everyone in the family has the same reaction when you show them? Peter is doing great things for sharing the positive message of Ag in a fun way that even the mainstream media loves. Thanks for sharing Kate.

07.01.2022 Isnt is lovely to meet and have a great conversation with someone who not only impresses you with what they are trying to achieve but are genuinely a wonderful person? I had a great chat with Stephanie Schmidt https://www.facebook.com/cultivatepsychology at the Thriving Womens conference earlier this year and was thrilled to hear that she won the SA Rural Women of the Year award because her project idea is worthy and needed. This morning I listened to her interview on the M...otherland Australia podcast and will also share that link. I just found her facebook page and will share that now, because we all need positive reminders and tips from others who understand that motherhood, life and juggling a farming business are both rewarding and challenging.

06.01.2022 This news is more than just an update from Telstra. It shows what a small group of volunteers have been able to achieve. Thanks again to Kirsty and the team. Your efforts over the years are very much appreciated

06.01.2022 Sharing info from Maree at SQ Landscapes: The Queensland Government has introduced new health plans for agriculture businesses and workers. These changes enable the agriculture and commercial fishing sectors to access a seasonal workforce (e.g. mustering teams), while still meeting their COVID-19 public health obligations. Under this new health direction, all agribusinesses who employ (or have as visitors or contractors) interstate workers or seasonal workers (e.g. shearing t...eams) are required to submit a Workplace Health Management Plan to a Queensland Health Public Health Unit by email at [email protected] These new plans apply to shearing contractors, fencing contractors, mustering contractors (ground and chopper teams) and any other agricultural workers who travel and stay away from their permanent home at night. It does not apply to agricultural transport workers (e.g. road train drivers). Workplace Health Management Plans are not required if every worker returns home every night. For western Queensland shearing contractors, fencing contractors and mustering contractors as well as the grazing properties they work on are required to submit a Workplace Health Management Plan. Plans are submitted by a business (e.g. multiple properties can be included in the plan where owned by a single business; or by a sole-trader with a single employee) rather than for each individual worker involved. https://www.health.qld.gov.au//cho-public/seasonal-workers The Seasonal Workers Health Management Plans Direction is available from https://www.health.qld.gov.au//cho-public/seasonal-workers More information on these changes are available online for businesses, including templates for the health management plans from https://www.business.qld.gov.au//coronavirus-support/seas/ The new measures are explained in a webinar that covers all aspects including health plans, interstate quarantine requirements, workplace health and safety and more, and is followed by a Question and Answers session at the end. You can watch the webinar here. Questions about the new framework can be directed to your local DAF Agricultural Coordination Officer, by email to [email protected] or phone 13 25 23.

05.01.2022 A bloke talking about anxiety, expectations, self-doubt and the path to finding balance is worth listening to (especially with your partner)

04.01.2022 They say talking about suicide saves lives. Unfortunately, today is a day we remember lives lost to suicide. #doitfordolly day raises awareness about the tragic impact bullying can have on our children. But we dont just lose children to depression. I have seen a few of the #25pushups25dayschallenges on facebook this week.... Most I watch for a moment and think about the importance of the message "talk when things get tough". Today I watched one and cried. Its my cousin, talking about his father who committed suicide in 2009. My Uncle contributed so much to those around him and the wider community. But what I remember most was his happy mannerisms and how much he loved his family, especially his boys. So today I wore blue for dolly, but tonight Ill have a drink for my Uncle. Gone but not forgotten

04.01.2022 As a mum who has a 10 and 16 year old my heart breaks for all those impacted by this devastating loss. When you know them personally it is even more more heartbreaking. The Cameron family have a beautiful way for people to show their support and give to an important organisation.... In sad times like this people often want to do something to show the family their support and this is lovely opportunity to do so.

03.01.2022 Thanks to Covid my first interaction with my Australian Rural Leadership Foundation cohort is not hiking in the Kimberley but battling ‘unstable internet’ on zoom. It’s impressive to think for 30 years the commitment to provide impactful leadership for rural, remote and regional Australia has been facilitated on a continual basis. Fortunately, it’s also flexible.... Today we looked at behaviour profiling using the DiSC (Dominance, influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness) method. It’s essentially about understanding yourself, your work priorities and preferences and then how to connect better with others. But it also involves acknowledging the parts of your behaviour that others don’t like - it kindly gives you a list!

01.01.2022 Mothers, wives and sisters have overwhelmed a suicide prevention service with stories of loss and grief after it featured on ABC Landline. So why is this a good news story? Agriculture operates in parts of Australia where the residents are some of the best examples of community we have in Australia. ... In terms of work ethics and high standards of operation and innovation, Agriculture is right up there. We keep, analyse and continually work on the performance records of our land and animals, while at the same time ensuring the environment and animal welfare are priorities for our industry. We havent been so good at looking after the people who ensure all this happens. We havent ensured every member of our family business feels heard, valued and that their contribution matters. This is a good news story because the more we talk about how much we care about each other, the better we will be at talking to each other. I am sure improving communication within family businesses is a goal of many in our industry.

01.01.2022 Good morning all, please have a read and feel free to share. On the 27th June 2001, I was unfortunate enough to be involved and seriously injured, in a very fre...ak horse accident on a Gulf country property. I was on the worse end, of a hind leg kick from an equine, in the back of a horse truck, and received a depressed fracture to the left side of my skull. I was knocked out cold, with what felt like an hour, was more like a minute. For those who don’t know, the left side of the brain controls both the right side of the body, and all speech mechanisms, which I now had no control over. To be aware and completely scared of the situation, was an understatement. Luckily, we are blessed in this country, to have the brilliant and ever reliable Royal Flying Doctor Service. The RFDS were dispatched from Mount Isa, loaded myself, returned to Mount Isa, and then onto Townsville for neurosurgeon the next day. For this I am truly grateful and forever in your debt. This is truly, one of the greatest services and we need to keep them gliding through the skies. Therefore, as the 20th anniversary of this significant event, Kate and I, with McAuley Contracting, will be making a large donation to the RFDS. We have decided to run an online raffle, with all ticket purchases going directly to the cause. The prize will be a 40L Engel fridge, that McAuley Contracting will be donating at no cost to the raffle whatsoever. We will post a video in the next few days with details, I hope we can make a substantial donation, these guys certainly deserve it.
