22.01.2022 It’s been a busy weekend in Torquay! On Friday night, crews were notified that there was water entering a number of residential backyards. With fears that a nea...rby 180 megalitre (180,000,000 litre) private dam was a potential source, SES volunteers along with Victoria Police commenced a doorknock to advise residents in the immediate vicinity of the developing situation and recommend that they evacuate their homes. VICSES volunteers from 8 different units (including two from Victoria SES - Central Region - North West Metro) along with CFA brigades and other organisations did a tremendous job in assisting to make the incident safe for residents to return yesterday afternoon. VICSES volunteers assisted with: Providing information to community through door knocks and the establishment of a community information point Pumping water from affected residents yards Deploying specialist resources such as lighting trailers and the field operations vehicle Being on standby with specialist Land Based Swift Water Rescue if required We’d like to thank all our members, other emergency services and the community at large for their assistance and playing their part over the weekend #weworkasone. 18.01.2022 POLICE INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE GREATER COMMUNITY INTERACTION IN ARMSTRONG CREEK Waurn Ponds Police are commencing a new community initiative focusing on the Armst...rong Creek and Charlemont communities. The strategy has been bought about by the recent periods of increased High-Volume Crime in the area. During these periods intelligence gaps with regards to crimes being committed and reported to police and the reporting of suspicious behaviour were identified. A significant under reporting to police in these areas does not allow for targeted patrols to occur. In some cases images of possible offenders were posted to Community and personal Facebook pages but not supplied to the police. Intelligence indicates that offenders were predominantly targeting unlocked vehicles or forcing entry to vehicles. Further to this, intelligence shows that associated offences of burglary and aggravated burglary were being committed in order to steal vehicle keys in order to then steal vehicles. Intelligence also indicates that stolen vehicles are being utilised to commit further offences, including burglary and petrol theft in other response zones within the police Division. Waurn Ponds Police will be working with their community encouraging them to report any suspicious activity they observe in the area to 000 immediately. You can report some non-urgent crime and events anytime, anywhere by calling our Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or submitting an online report. Our Police Assistance Line and online reporting service provides you with the ability to call us 24 hours a day, seven days a week to report lost property or property related crime such as a theft or property damage, or to make general police enquiries. We have added these new contact options to help improve the response, management and delivery of police services to our community. You should still call Triple Zero (000) immediately if the incident is life-threatening, needs immediate police attendance, a crime is happening now, or an offender is (or may be) still in the area.

08.01.2022 HAVE THE TOUGH CONVERSATION WITH AN ELDERLY DRIVER Over the past 12 months there has been a rise in collisions involving elderly drivers, a total of 86 collisio...ns, which resulted in 12 serious injuries and 2 fatalities , The main causes being failing to give way and poor car control such as pressing the wrong pedal. As drivers get older, skills can diminish and the rise of being injured or killed in a collision can increase. Whilst discussions with family members over the decision of whether to drive a vehicle can be a sensitive issue, the safety of road users should be paramount. If family have concerns about elderly drivers, VicRoads or Police can be contacted and have the licence reviewed which maybe a case of a driver having a driving assessment to check their ability to drive a vehicle or the decision to hand in a licence maybe a safer option for all. A number of elderly drivers have been through this process and had further driving lessons to improve their skills and longevity on the road. Your never too old to learn new skills.
