25.01.2022 COVID-19 has hit all of us pretty hard, but spare a thought for our microbiology teams at RPA and Concord. They’ve processed more than 265,000 swabs this year a...nd are probably seeing them in their sleep. In March, the teams were processing about 40 a day. That then boomed to almost 2000 a day at peak times an extraordinary effort considering they've also had to keep up with all other demands in our busy hospitals. The teams found solutions quickly and maintained a professional, agile and responsive service, all while keeping smiles on their faces. They’ve had a direct impact on stopping the spread of COVID-19 and have saved lives. In honour of this, we held a thank you event by Zoom today and staff were given gifts kindly donated by HESTA. Artist Simon Fieldhouse also produced this beautiful drawing to commemorate their work. Thanks for your monumental contributions, everyone. As we already know, some heroes wear lab coats. See more

17.01.2022 Teachers always ask me how is best to store their DNA. I always say, as long as you dont freeze/thaw out to often it will last forever. We found proof today, we found an old DNA fingerprinting kit shooting in a cupboard at a school, since 2012. Not bad results! #STEMed #STEM #biologyteacher #biology #AussieTeachers

15.01.2022 At STEM Reactor we have been thinking about the latest news in biotechnology. We have just started a blog and hoping to post more over the coming weeks. Our first article is on the topic of Meatless Meat. It is a great conversation starter about how biotechnology can support sustainability by reducing our reliance on meat. All our blog posts include background about new biotechnologies, ethics in bio and activities you can do with your class. https://stemreactor.com.au/genetic-engineer//meatless-meat

11.01.2022 Fig wasps: these tiny male waits live their entire life inside the bulb of a fig. 06.01.2022 For many years I pitched science shows to large science networks and was unsuccessful. I would receive the feedback that "the majority of our audience is male, ...so we just don't know if they'd relate to a female host" But last year, Netflix picked up our science show, Emily's Wonder Lab. I filmed the entire thing 9 months pregnant. So there is now a female-led science show on the biggest streaming platform in the world hosted by a pregnant woman - available world wide. I'm just...so incredibly proud that my daughter will be able to watch this someday. When I was studying to become an engineer, I was one of 2 or 3 women in classrooms of 50 men. I'm hoping shows like this help change that demographic for her generation

04.01.2022 Crown shyness is a phenomenon observed in some tree species, in which the crowns of fully stocked trees do not touch each other, forming a canopy with channel-l...ike gaps. The phenomenon is most prevalent among trees of the same species, but also occurs between trees of different species. There exist many hypotheses as to why crown shyness is an adaptive behavior, and research suggests that it might inhibit spread of leaf-eating insect larvae. Image: Tom Cowey See more

02.01.2022 Todays session at #CONASTA68 was on cross-curricular teaching using forensic science. An awesome way to get students excited about STEM! We did blood splatter simulations, electrophoresis and talked about a bunch other applied sciences.

02.01.2022 Can you guess what this is? If you guessed mosquito foot then youre a really good guess or you cheated. Many species of mosquitoes act as vectors of diseases.... In passing from host to host, some transmit extremely harmful infections such as malaria, yellow fever, Chikungunya, West Nile virus, dengue fever, filariasis, Zika virus and other arboviruses, rendering it the deadliest animal family in the world. This image was taken by Steve Gschmeissner and has been shortlisted for the Best Science Photographs 2017.

01.01.2022 Woman identifying and gender-diverse facebook friends! Its time for my quarterly offer to teach you to code and to invite you to be a Girls Programming Networ...k Sydney (GPN) volunteer! Comment/PM me/use this link: tinyurl.com/tutorgpn if you are interested or have questions. Please share too if you have any STEM incline friends! If you have ever wanted to learn to code, now is your chance! It just comes with a small catch, you have to help me teach a bunch of girls how to code! Trust me, you can do this, Ill tell you how! Why do we need you? GPN has become ridiculously popular in recent years, what can I say, its a cool program full of cool people (and you can be one of them!). But our success lies in the number of volunteers we have! having 1:3 volunteer to student ratio means there is always plenty of help and encouragement around! Since we have so many girls (170) who want to come, it means we need LOTS of tutors too! How is this possible?? This Sunday Morning (8th of April) you come along to the Practice Party where we run through the workbook were going to teach to the girls. In the process we will teach you how to code! Then on Sunday 22nd of April we teach some lovely girls between 10 and 18 years of age how to code! We have a bunch of fun! You get even better at coding by teaching it to others! You show the girls it is never too late to learn to code! "How could I possibly learn enough to teach coding in just one practice day??" you might say.... You will be a much bigger help than you might think! Firstly, your adult brain is really good at paying attention to things and not freaking out when a small error occurs. Youve had practice working on problems and breaking them down into smaller problems. And you have a much better attention for detail (for spotting things like spelling mistakes). And yes, you wont know ALL of the answers on the day, but you dont need too! There will be a bunch of other tutors around you who can help you out. Then when a girl asks you the exact same question 5 minutes later you will have the answer! Between us, well be able to solve all the problems! Most importantly, it is really great to us to have new coders in our tutor team! Having someone say "I dont know the answer lets figure it out" shows them we are all still learning really helps boost their confidence! So comment, PM me, email [email protected] or go to this form if you are interested or curious! tinyurl.com/tutorgpn I would love to have you on the team!!
