06.01.2022 Starting today, Muslims at home and around the world will observe the holy month of Ramadan. This holy month is a time for spiritual reflection, self-improvemen...t, re-establishing one’s relationship with God, and to reflect on those less fortunate. Here’s a few facts about Ramadan Ramadan starts with the sighting of the new moon of the 9th month of the Islamic calendar Muslims fast to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate Fasting takes place during daylight and those participating do not eat or drink (even water) To prepare for the fast people have a pre-dawn meal called ‘Suhoor’ When it’s time to break the fast at sunset, people usually break it with dates and tea or water followed by having a meal called ‘Iftar’ Not everybody fasts. Children, elderly, pregnant women, and those with medical conditions aren’t required to fast With the sighting of the next new moon, Ramadan ends and Muslims mark the end of the month with celebration and feasting known as Eid al-Fitr.
