25.01.2022 Heres an interesting article from WIRED that explores some of the behavioural aspects of mask wearing. US focused but universally relevant. #covid19 #behaviouralscience

25.01.2022 Our friends at the Australian Association of Social Marketing (AASM) have another great webinar lined up - this time with Joy Parkinson (Griffith University) and Sarah Green from Victoria's South Coast Primary and Community Partnership. #codesign #socmar #socimp

25.01.2022 Another post from the vault. In this piece, Rik Bass looks at the Action-Intention gap and explores five dimensions of behaviour change that he leverages to design behavioural interventions.

22.01.2022 We love this description of #socialenterprise from Russell Shields earlier today. It speaks to what we're about so well. While many big brands virtue signal about the issues of the day, social enterprises do their best to solve them. #resultsdriven #profitforpurpose Please share if you agree, and if possible tag a social enterprise you think is doing a great job.

21.01.2022 Social distancing in rural Northumberland. Love it! #covid19 #communications

21.01.2022 We've signed this open letter to try and get a clear health warning label on alcohol.

20.01.2022 Love this on so many levels. A traffic cop in Chennai normalising the use of #facemasks for a young child. - Pic: Shantanu Dutta Wikimedia Commons

19.01.2022 Our Founder Luke van der Beeke will join Victorian Chief Health Officer Prof. Andrew Sutton and Health Economist Prof Jonathan Karnon as a panellist at the 3rd Health Issues Centre Online Forum. The forum will provide a unique opportunity for the community to discuss the implications of the governments COVID-19 recovery strategy. Join hundreds of health consumers, health sector workers and government representatives for what promises to be a thought provoking, highly inform...ative online session. #health #covid19

19.01.2022 A glimpse of what the world could look like in a cleaner post-covid world. #behaviourchange #newnormal #sustainability #climatechange

19.01.2022 A fantastic example of behavioural design out of Tokyo. To combat concerns that public toilets are dark, smelly and scary The Nippon Foundation launched "The Tokyo Toilet Project" which features transparent tinted glass. Prospective users can inspect the toilet from outside and, if satisfied with the level cleanliness, avail themselves of the facilities. Thankfully the glass turns opaque when the door is locked. Question for you - would you be confident enough in the smart glass to give it a go?

19.01.2022 Were thrilled to welcome former Colmar Brunton CEO Joan Young to The BCC. Joan is one of Australias leading social researchers and shares our passion for delivering social impact through her work. Shes also an expert in behavioural change, with over 30 years experience using strategic insight to deliver social outcomes for government and non-profit organisations. ... "It will be immensely rewarding to work in partnership with clients who share our focus on delivering social impact and who see research as an integral part of developing the solution," Joan said. #behaviourchange #research #socimp

19.01.2022 How to measure societal attitudes over time. Measure frequency of words in self improvement books. The first photo is the most frequently used words in self improvement books in the late 19th Century. The second photo is from the early 20th Century.... What words do you think would appear most frequently in a self-improvement book today???? Leave a comment and let us know!

18.01.2022 Our friends at the HealthConsumers Council have been facilitating some really interesting fireside chats over the past few month. This one promises to be no exception.

18.01.2022 While we fully support the use of #facemasks to reduce the spread of #COVID19, as #behaviourchange practitioners were mindful of barriers to uptake. This cartoon depicts one such barrier for dog owners...

18.01.2022 A great bit of creative.

17.01.2022 For almost 12 months now government and health bodies have told the public to wash hands with soap and running water for at least 30 seconds. But many public restrooms have taps set to prioritise water savings over hand hygiene. Saving water is a laudable goal but a secondary priority in germ filled public restrooms. Clear messaging is great, but to affect #behaviourchange environmental barriers to adoption of the desired behaviour need to be identified and addressed. ... Watch the video. Would you persevere with this for the recommended 30 seconds? Let us know in the comments. #publichealth #handhygiene #covid_19 #covidaustralia

17.01.2022 Were proud to have worked with many humanitarians over the years. Today we say thank you to all the amazing individuals who perform acts of bravery, compassion and kindness in the service of humanity. You are the real heros.

17.01.2022 This recent study found the most common failed behavioural interventions (65 articles 2008-2019) were nudges, and ones that relied on social comparisons and social norms (which accounted for 40%). This probably speaks more to the import of selecting the right intervention type for each behavioural challenge than it does to the usefulness of nudge and norms based approaches when applied in the right context If you’re not sure what type of intervention is right for your particular challenge please get in touch. We’d be happy to help.

17.01.2022 Social marketing is one of our prefered behaviour change methodologies. This article explores how social marketing is being used in #Bangladesh to change behaviours during #COVID19. Well worth a read

16.01.2022 Were thrilled to welcome former Kantar Executive Director Donna van Bueren to our leadership team. Donna said she was drawn to The BCC for the quality of the expertise of its people and its purpose of, and commitment to, achieving positive social change. Affecting change that improves lives is an often overused and under-delivered line, but this is exactly the objective on which The BCC is founded, and its reason for operating as it does, she said.... Donnas appointment significantly enhances The BCCs in-house behavioural insight, research, and strategic comms capabilities. If youd like to know more about how we can help your organisation achieve its behavioural objectives please get in touch. #socimp #behaviourchange #socmar #nfp #comms

16.01.2022 An useful webinar from The Behavioural Insights Team on crafting effective communications during a crisis. It draws very heavily on social marketing and health communications.

16.01.2022 We're pleased to be partnering with @GreeningAustralia and The City of Bayswater on this @Lotterywest funded project. #sustainability #liveablecities #climatechange #publichealth

15.01.2022 Just prior to the spike in #COVID19 cases in Melbourne our own Luke van der Beeke joined Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Prof. Brett Sutton and South Australian Health Economist Prof. Jonathan Karnon on a national webinar to answer the question - Will the Road to Recovery be Paved with Casualties." Luke's presentation is now available to view.

14.01.2022 Cancer Council Western Australia and Telethon Kids Institute are two of several organisations calling for a ban on #junkfood advertising on government property. https://www.abc.net.au//health-agencies-want-junk/12877064 We think it’d be a good move. How about you? Thoughts?

14.01.2022 We have two members of our leadership team speaking at the upcoming #GovComms Festival. Joan is our Director Research and Evaluation and brings a wealth of experience to what is sure to be an engaging and insightful presentation. Thanks to our friends Social Marketing at Griffith for reaching out. We’re glad we could help!

14.01.2022 Earlier today researcher Dr May Carter delivered a pro-bono evaluation session with staff at the Health Consumers' Council - WA. We've worked with the Health Consumers' Council on several projects over the past few years, and it was nice to give a little back to such a valuable community organisation. You can find our more about The Health Consumers Council at: https://www.hconc.org.au/

14.01.2022 Here is our latest poll. We'd love to hear your thoughts. Please share!

12.01.2022 The best #nudges are often the simplest. We just saw this great behavioural prompt at a local physiotherapists reception area.

12.01.2022 Nestle Malaysia have introduced new on-pack guidance to inform consumers how to dispose of their #waste packaging. We've taken a look and think the simplicity of the labels are a step in the right direction. #plastics #enviro

12.01.2022 Were pleased to be a part of this fantastic urban greening initiative. #climatechange #community #environment

12.01.2022 About 4 weeks ago Luke joined Professor Brett Sutton (Victorian Chief Health Officer) and Professor Jonathan Karnon (Flinders University) on a webinar for the Health Issues Centre. The topic - will the road to recovery be paved with casualties? He argued that a successful journey will largely depend on government's ability to influence community attitudes and behaviours. And to do that, we need to see three things from those in power - COURAGE, BRAINS and a HEART. #covid19australia #publichealth #covid19response

12.01.2022 Last Sunday we joined Greening Australia and the City of Canning in delivery of a community workshop covering the #urbanheat island effect and #vergedesign. Participants enjoyed mapping the heat emanating from different urban and natural surfaces. There was also some genuine surprise about how much cooler the ground was beneath tree canopy. After the heat mapping activities we all considered the benefits of verge gardens, which include:... - Increased amenity - Cooler neighbourhoods - Biodiversity - Improved property values. Finally, attendees had a go at designing their own verges before leaving with some free plants from the City. The workshop was part of the Lotterywest funded #OurParkOurPlace project. #environment #sustainable #biodiversity

11.01.2022 Today we joined the City of Bayswater at their community planting day. We spoke to community members about their ideas for Arbor Park, which is one of four parks chosen to be part of Greening Australia's Lotterywest funded #OurParkOurPlace project. As part of the project, we're conducting a survey to capture community attitudes toward a range of environmental issues. If you live in the City of Bayswater you can complete the survey here: https://culturecounts.cc/s/bayswater1 #NationalTreeDay #communityengagement #environment #parklife

09.01.2022 This is an interesting article that suggests the #arts might be a good way to tackle #climatechange. We're inclined to agree. How about you?

08.01.2022 In this article the author suggests #covid19 provides a great opportunity for people to change their #health behaviours for good. While we agree it provides an opportunity, our sense is that many people have already reverted back to their pre-covid ways. What do you think? Do you believe healthier behaviours will be maintained, or are you less optimistic?

07.01.2022 We were on a #systemsthinking webinar today. This was our favourite quote. It speaks to many things we value, including the import of #empathy and #humility when developing change programs.

05.01.2022 The City of Canning is seeking feedback from residents on the design of a greener Groundlark park. Were pleased to be working with them, Greening Australia and other WA local governments to reduce urban heat spots in some of Perths high risk areas.

04.01.2022 #Nature #conservation policy rarely changes people's behaviour because: "... measures proposed by politicians do not sufficiently exploit the range of possible behavioral interventions and too rarely specify the actual target groups." - Journal of Conservation Biology. We have expertise and knowledge of a broad range of behavioural interventions, including social marketing which places emphasis on segmentation and targeting. If you want to influence people's behaviour for good why not get in touch? #socmar #behaviourchange

04.01.2022 Were looking forward to this. Enjoying a tasty treat and a coffee while enjoying some local live music is always hard to beat! If youre in East Cannington bring the kids and join us! #ourparkourplace

01.01.2022 With the imminent availability of one or more vaccines it will not be long before governments and public health agencies are in the game of persuading the mass of the population to take advantage of the vaccine availability. This guest post from Prof. Jeff French explores 10 action areas to encourage #COVID19 #vaccination uptake.

01.01.2022 Happy New Year all! In 2021 efforts to tackle #climatechange will likely come back into focus. After all, it remains humanity’s largest existential threat. Despite some people’s belief that their own actions have little to no impact on the world's wicked problems, research shows that individual #behaviourchange could reduce carbon #emissions by up to 20%.... This article from Forbes outlines nine evidence based New Year's resolutions that if adopted widely could result in collective action. I’ll be focusing my efforts on (1) advocacy, (2) riding my bike more, (4) further reducing my energy use, (5) reducing my unnecessary consumption, and (6) talking to others about what I’m up to... Are there any on the list you could focus on? ~ Luke #environment #carbonneutral #climate
