24.01.2022 Attention Club Members: Stan Edwards is opening his hives this Saturday (tomorrow) and has kindly asked if any members would like to accompany him. 24.01.2022 The monthly meeting is on again tomorrow (3rd Wednesday of the month). It will start at 7pm at Dr Prices Rooms on Little Street. Normal meeting items will begin and it will be followed by a great presentation by Reg on Spring Management of your Hives. All welcome to attend. With the warm but dry conditions this will be a very valuable presentation. Also Reg would like to remind all beekeepers not to sell honey to the general public to feed the native birds with. Honey in the open can attract robber bees or be taken back to a hive and possibly contaminate the hive with diseases.

We hope to see everyone there.

23.01.2022 Calling all bee enthusiasts - we are compiling a list of video links that people feel are of good quality and helpful to other bee keepers (eg youtube etc). Sometimes visually seeing someone perform a task can make all the difference. We will collate them into topics and upload the links on the website. If you know of any great video clips please do let us know so we can share the knowledge around.
23.01.2022 Members lock this date in your diaries: Saturday 24th August. This will be the day that all members are invited to an Equipment Explanation/Assembly Day at Rons place. Operations will commence at around 9.00am and will probably continue until early afternoon. This day is mainly aimed at new beekeepers who want to learn the skills. Box kits and frames will available, but you may also wish to bring some of your own kits to assemble. There may be some second hand boxes availa...ble for purchase for those who are interested. So if you want help building your own gear this is the perfect day for you. Some of the more experienced members will be on hand to help and also loan their equipment (take it from me, wiring up your own frames is A LOT easier with a special jig). Please rsvp to our President Glen ASAP.

18.01.2022 We periodically receive messages from bee enthusiasts from further afield. Just last week we had a lovely message from a new member in Charleville. Luckily when you are a member you have access to our meetings that are now streamed online (since COVID-19 we have been continually working on improving our online accessibility). Members also receive our informative newsletters and can join in on any scheduled field days or events if they can. Not to mention access to a wealth of knowledge! Between our Toowoomba branch and Dalby sub-branch however we are unaware of any bee clubs that are farther west in this wonderful state. If by chance you know of any, please do get in contact and let us know, as we are always keen to be able to share as much information with our western friends as we can.

17.01.2022 Lately we have received a large number of enquires from people wanting to buy "nuc boxes". (For those new to beekeeping a Nucleus hive of bees is like a start pack for your hive and has some frames, brood, eggs and a Queen, it is the typical way most people start their hives unless you are keen to catch a swarm right off the bat). In terms of getting a Nucleus hive for your, a number of members have these available for sale from time to time. They normally become available in... late Spring/mid Summer. However because of the very tough conditions for the last 2 years their may not be as many available for sale this year. If you are a member of the club (or decide to join up, see toowoombabeekeepers.org for details on our website) we can include you on a spreadsheet for supply of a Nucleus hives when they become available. A preference is given to those members starting out needing their first hive to get going.

16.01.2022 We are going to start posting snapshots every month or so of some of our members, that way people can see what a diverse and knowledgeable club we are. Each month we will be asking a member the same 3 questions. Naturally the first cab off the rank has to be our President - Glen Tucker. So Glen..... 1. How long have you been keeping bees? 6 years 2. What is one of the most rewarding parts of being a beekeeper for you? Being able to keep "livestock" which are productive in the back yard and the fascination that I derive from watching them go about their work. 3. Do you have a hot tip for a new beekeeper youd like to share? If you have an interest in the natural world, then there is little better than keeping bees and I would encourage "newbees" that are thinking about it but have not yet taken the plunge, to get into it, as we have plenty of help on hand. We are incredibly thankful Glen for all the amazing work you do for our club!

08.01.2022 REPORTING LOSSES TO AHBIC Our thoughts are with all beekeepers who have experienced unprecedented losses from the ongoing bushfires. Yesterday you may have seen some posts in a number of Facebook groups asking to assist AHBIC with quantifying the impact on our industry to date, including losses of both hives and resources.... If you have been impacted, please email your State Secretary (details below) regarding your own losses of bees, hives and resource. Please also consider including numbers of hives that have been impacted by emergency relocation, as the significant loss of field bees is also taking a toll on colonies. These stats will then be forwarded on to AHBIC. It is important AHBIC can accurately report on the full extent of losses in order for them to communicate with State and Federal governments on the devastation. AHBIC also needs to be properly equipped to communicate possible impacts on future availability of bees for next years pollination contracts. Any queries on the above can be directed to your State Secretary. STATE SECRETARY CONTACT DETAILS * Queensland Beekeepers Association: [email protected]
