13.01.2022 *OPPORTUNITY* Are you a law student with at least two semesters of experience in Witness or Mooting competitions? The Victorian Bar is seeking your assistance and providing you with a wonderful opportunity.... WHO? - The Australian Bar Association (ABA) is running its 14th Advanced Trial Advocacy Intensive (ATAI) in Melbourne from 20 to 24 January 2020 with assistance from the Victorian Bar. WHAT? - We are looking for students to play the role of witnesses at various times from the Tuesday to the Friday (20 to 24 January 2020). - The ATAI covers all aspects of trial advocacy and is intense as the name suggests. The examination/cross examination elements of the course are performed with live witnesses who role play their parts based on affidavits/witness statements. With the expert evidence segment, we use real accountants in the civil stream and psychologists in the criminal stream. - We will have approximately 30 experienced participating barristers from around the country, UK, NZ and Singapore. The course will have about 20 senior Judges and silks from Australia, NZ, South Africa, Malaysia and the UK who will be coaching, together with 3 performance coaches who come from an acting/film background. WHY? The opportunities for you should be self-evident: - Experience what it is like to be a witness being examined and cross examined by top level barristers. - Directly observe more senior advocates being put through their paces and then listen to their performances being critiqued by some of the best advocacy coaches in the profession including top silks and judges. - Observe reviews which typically involves the advocacy coach providing a demonstration. - Participate in an intense program which costs barristers many thousands of dollars to be a part of. - Hone your own advocacy skills. HOW? - All students will receive detailed instructions on how to perform their roles and a timetable in due course. - On the days that you are needed, the ABA will cover morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. - Students will also receive an information pack about the Steps to the Bar, and future Student Engagement Committee events and Programs.
