24.01.2022 Hello all, long time but I have been being productive. I have a question for anyone but mainly those midwives and birth peeps out there. Dealing with the medical system and birth at the age of nearly 43 has been a very different experience. Not a great one either so far. This pregnancy has gone wonderfully well perhaps even better than my previous 2 pregnancies. Text book, no complications and love the changes (except heart burn). The medico's persist in their scare tactics...Continue reading

23.01.2022 This is just the beginning...

22.01.2022 Something bothering me lately is the way the system is still geared for reaction rather than prevention. I believe the biggest cause is the inability to speak the language of our clients. As practitioners, medical professionals, specialists etc, we can ‘tell’ people all day long what they should do and many of us do this. Some practitioners may not bother educating based on the assumption that the client won’t listen anyway. If we do give advice often it is biased towards our... own beliefs. In my practice of Podiatry, I have grown throughout the years and improved my communication techniques based on the feedback I was getting. This feedback told me that I was coming across as ‘telling’ or ‘dictating’. This perception bothered me and inspired me to test and try varied tones and words and connotations etc. over the years to be more effective at helping my clients make better choices or at least informed choices regardless of that choice. I have now developed a way of talking that is real, understanding, non-judgmental, non-biased, humour based and gives the person information as clearly and factually as possible. I utilise my dry sometimes dark humour by saying things like, ‘If you take my advice, I lose business. If you don’t I get to see you more often’. I also make it real by using examples like ‘I am not supposed to have dairy as the consequences aren’t nice. Sometimes I choose it anyway but know and accept the result of that choice. And it’s a balance between living and having a life. I was taught the ‘RULES’ at University. I know we don’t all read the rule book. I know we have likes, passions and beliefs that give us our identity and I don’t treat my clients by attempting to fit them into that text book What I do is ask, learn, understand and then work together to reach the goals we set and agree on. I use language and rapport and compassion to find a way for each person that acknowledges who they are and what is important, so they are truly treated individually and feel heard and valued. It’s the greatest satisfaction to see someone resolve a problem that they may have had for so many years and never believed things could be any different. See more

15.01.2022 For everyone overly freaking out over the virus: Remember. Some of us live with this threat every day.... Having a compromised immune system, a medically fragile child or another similar issue means taking precautions daily that most never think about. And you know what? We are the ones NOT freaking out. So for those critical people who couldn't appreciate what we were getting at by posting our usual efforts at infection control. Wake up! Be kind, sensible and love your neighbour. Remember community and the concept of team and providing for everyone to win. Now is the time where we will, and have seen, what each other is really about. Who is greedy, selfish and full of fear And who are moving through this with love, compassion, strength, purpose and a good sense of self. The one's who can smile and share and do so in as safe a way possible. These are times of truth and change and metamorphosis. Of hope and excitement. I am interested where we will end up on the other side. And what kind of world we will be living in. So to those that criticised my efforts to show what living daily with illness and fragility means we have done the following: Taken the doors off all rooms so no touching Gotten robotics in where the podiatrist stays at home and talks the 'bot' through your consultation A full body suit like a condom is dispensed onto you at the door so you don't shed anything and you walk through a spray insecticide on entry There is a portal that opens up in the.ground and your debris is disposed of into the centre of the earth where it spontaneously combusts If your temperature rises during entry you will also be exterminated into the chasm of purity. (Until we find a way to beam you into an alternate reality) So, we hope you appreciate these optimal measures for safety and we are confident that the extremists of fear and negativity will be soothed. You can relax knowing that you don't need to take any social responsibility for your actions. We just took care of it for you.

09.01.2022 Ok i think its time I fess up. What shoes are in my wardrobe?? Now disclaimer here: my sermon is: 'don't wreck your feet for home, work or exercise. Save it for special occasions like outings where your having fun and looking good and can have a drink if toes get sore. But if you get hurt its your own fault cause you never learned to walk in those shoes.' Or in my quiet little confession, where i anesthetized my own toe to wear an awesome new pair of shoes. That's dedication...! That's crazy! That's so awkward and painful, but i do like to take one for the benefit of man and womenkind. So.... warning, gorey pic below.. but BEST shoes eva. WiN. And if things get a bit sore have another drink! and Diabetic folk can have vodka and soda cause I'm totally inclusive. See more

09.01.2022 I want to share a post talking about what we, as therapists at Heal & Soul Podiatry and Healthcare Services stand for. I hope you enjoy the read and feedback is always appreciated. Talking about one of our newest products (Archline UGG and Mocassin slippers) over on our Heal and Soul page sparked a conversation about our beliefs and standards of care. We love thinking up ideas that make people happy. Things like great gift ideas for those loved ones that are difficult to buy ...Continue reading

06.01.2022 Today i spent all my lunch break and over 1 hour with this person. I probably shouldnt have in most peoples books but she needed it. Decent wound management, dressings, skin not washed since May due to many ulcers. And putting measures in place to ensure the recently healed areas are protected from this happening again. It was great to make someone more comfortable and to show care and to clean and renew both legs and make someone feel human again. This is what i do this for. And sorry if she didn't want all that care either Podiatrists know our wound care. Something many dont realise. We have the hardest part of the body the work on when it comes to ulcers and I see and resolve many wounds, now with the aide of my Podiatry Nurse assistant. And I love to beat my personal best with healing them as quickly as possible

06.01.2022 The amusing expressions of Javier during our first video attempt to help people feel better about nail surgery. Nailed it? Maybe not. This is a procedure that was done after this client had exhausted all means of curing a severe fungal nail infection. All nails had resolved except the 1st nails and we decided to permanenty remove them to prevent reinfection to the rest of the toes and give him the best chance of going into older age without the risk of secondary complications such as Celluitis, severe fungal skin and feet and other infections due to a resistant fungal infection. Most surgical procedures are not this brutal but, be assured, he did not feel a thing and is recovering nicely with minimal discomfort.

05.01.2022 I have been really noticing the language of practitioners and how they like to put the perception of your experience onto you. In this example, pain. Pain perception. The responsibility lies in both the practitioner and the patient to determine what kind of experience they both have.... So, the amount of pain or discomfort, a patient will experience depends on their own previous experiences combined with the experiences of the practitioner. This is something I have noticed and reflected about over the years of working with Laser for fungal nails. The beginnings of my experience of using this modality was one where the patient was unable to tolerate even the slow setting without numerous breaks. Today, my patients can tolerate the fast setting with varying breaks depending on their state of mind and pain perception. I wondered what the difference was. My patients did not get tougher in 6 years My laser had not altered in 6 years (it is regularly serviced and calibrated) So what was the difference.... I realised it was Me. My language, my mindset, my techniques. It really drove home the truth that we can affect and somewhat control, the overall experience someone has and it is NOT entirely up to the patient. They should not be blamed and their experience is our responsibility. I now notice this in other areas, particularly at the moment, in child birth, birth choices and the fact that the Cesarean rate is now 45%, a disgusting statistic in the so called 1st world society where we have one of the highest rate of maternal mortality and exceed the WHO recommended Cesar rate of 10%. Something to really reflect on. The fear based language of nurses, midwives, obstetricians, doctors which I believe, leads to that mistrust in our own bodies, leading to unnecessary intervention and the all so common 'emergency Cesar'. Have women changed in our lifetime of birthing? NO Have babies changed in our lifetime of birthing? NO What has changed?? The people taking control and getting sued and cutting up women out of fear of litigation, lack of suitable training, policies, negative language etc. Something to think about. And I do not mean genuine emergency high risk situations. But 45% emergencies??? Not likely.
