SaAT has long since had the goal to advocate and educate the wider community about art therapy and its benefits. As part of Octobers Mental Health Month - Learn and Grow, and with thanks to the Chrissie Cotter Gallery, 19 exhibiting art therapists are proud to have the opportunity to make art: About being an art therapist; About aspects of doing art therapy; And, on what art therapy is and it isnt. The exhibition contains art works in response to a diverse range of client groups and working contexts. These include children and schools, adolescents and adult mental health, disability and rehabilitation services, aged-care facilities and palliative care. Artworks attempt to explore a wide variety of emotional issues and human behaviour, including grief, loss and trauma, anxiety, depression and reparation. Art therapy theoretical concepts and processes also explore aspects of the client/therapist relationship, therapeutic holding and containment, potential space, transference and countertransference concepts. There is also an exploration of art therapy processes of materials and media, and aspects of the intersection between creativity and healing. In order to gain further understanding about what art therapy is and it isnt, the exhibition will offer information regarding art therapy terms used. A variety of interactive art making activities will be on offer and while not art therapy - they will provide guests with an opportunity for creativity and reflection.
